    I struggle with losing my appetite the first few days on trail, and your video gave me some good ideas on things I could bring that I might eat. Thank you for this video, looking forward to following your hike.

    When it comes to backpacking food I think you guys have one of the best channels. Getting your gear dialed in is one thing, but I found that you need to do the same with food. I made the mistake of overpacking and underpacking. You definitely have to find what works for you. I prefer some variety and having some favorites to look forward to on tough days. Can’t imagine backpacking with a guy that is only eating bean burritos for 7 days though! Hope you plan to stay upwind

    Great video! I agree, the zip lock bags accumulate like crazy if you’re not mindful of it. Enjoy your adventure, gentlemen!

    Great tips...especially the repackaging and reducing the trash. I'm having trouble stuffing all my food in a bear canister...so this is super helpful to reduce the size profile!

      It’s much more work but cuts wayyyy down on overall bulk.

    Just got back a couple weeks ago from a 5 night 60 mile hike in the Weminuche Wilderness between Silverton and Durango. Gorgeous despite a little smoke from California. Be aware that you might not be allowed to use liquid burning stoves

      @SchillBrothersOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ronald thanks for the tip! We ended up using a canister stove, however, from what I was told we were GTG on Alcohol while we were there (we just got back)

    Yo Guys! Love your channel! Just subscribed not too long ago. I like the idea of re-use of the freezer bags for breakfast!! Think i'm going to adopt that for the future. Just picked up some Mountain House biscuits and gravy. Havent tried that meal yet. What would you rate it on a 1-10 scale? Great video! Video very informative!! Thx Guys! Good luck in Colorado! Watch out for them grizzlies!

    Good choices but not enough variety for me. To each his own though. No Ramen Bomb fixins? Ever consider Stove Top Stuffing mix with some powdered gravy mix added in. Good stuff. What does your 7 day food load out weigh? I use the freezer bag method also. Good tip. Have a great trip. Be safe.

      Hey Jon, I have done stuffing mix with gravy and mashed potatoes and it’s amazing. No ramen bombs for this trip.

    When I hiked in the high country of Glacier National Park back in 2003, I made the mistake of leaving behind some bars and such and ended up regretting it. Luckily the group had enough to share so it ended up not being a problem. Like Andy, I didn't get enough calories during my main meals, something I would change of I were going to get back into this. Draggin' ass on the trail kinda sucks...

    • @SchillBrothersOutdoors

      Lol Andy. Just got back and I had a bunch of extra food. Glad I had it and didn’t use it rather then being hungry.

    I'm hiking the Foothills Trail in October and although I've heard of cold soaking food, especially oatmeal, I've never tried it. Can you explain just how you do it, the amount of water used, how long does it soak? And any other suggests or tips you've learned about cold soaking. I'm especially wondering about your dehydrated burrito mix. Do you eat it cold? and how tasty is that? Thanks!

    Another great vid. Good info.
    When you package multiple servings in one bag, do you have issues getting enough of the mix into a separate bag/pot? Like not getting enough of the powdered cheese or spices. (If you only are cooking one serving)

    • @SchillBrothersOutdoors
      @SchillBrothersOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you brought this up, yes that does happen. I try to make sure I get even servings of everything for each meal, but it doesn’t always happen.

      Schill Brothers Outdoors When you say you reuse your ziplock bags, does that mean you just used one for the entire trip for breakfast and kept taking the dehydrated food out of the one big bag?

    When you cold soak in a bag, where do you keep it so it doesn’t open? Or do you not hike with it while soaking?

  • @Auburnneil

    Great video! Quick question - do you guys try and target a certain number of calories per day? I’ve seen numbers from 2,000 - 4,000 per day, so was curious about your approach.

    • @SchillBrothersOutdoors
      @SchillBrothersOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Neil, I was roughly shooting for 2.5k per day. However, I really didn’t measure it out. We just got back and I had a lot of extra food.

    Do you know which grocery store sells the WIld Friends individual peanut butter packets? I bought 1 to try a long time ago at Target and now I can't find them anymore. I know they are available online, I just don't need 20 of them in bulk.

    What is the make-up/proportions of the Buffalo Chicken - Easy Mac meal? Sounds like something to try out.

    • @SchillBrothersOutdoors
      @SchillBrothersOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I rationed about 1/2cup of the dehydrated buffalo chicken mix to two packets of kraft easy Mac. That seems to work ok.

    So my question is do you just add boiling water to the zip lock? Have never tried that before. Have always used the mountain house bags or just packed MREs. Also where do you get your stingers? Love the channel. Keep up the awesome work!

    • @jonfornwald
      @jonfornwald 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. I do it all the time. Make sure you buy name brand "freezer" bags not sandwich bags or the boiling water might burn a hole in the bag. You can also reuse the empty Mountain House bag as a coozy to keep the freezer bags warm longer while it re hydrates. Only takes one MH bag to re hydrate all your meals.

    • @SchillBrothersOutdoors
      @SchillBrothersOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like Jon said, just grab Freezer bags and add boiling water to them, works great! All the normal grocery stores around me carry stinger brand gels and wafers. You can get them on amazon too.

    My latest video shows my food in my INCH bag, this is not for camping, but set up for emergency bugout.
    It ways almost 20 lbs but should easily carry me for 30 days, with nutrition and variety.
    Check out the video, you may get something new and useful.

    • @SchillBrothersOutdoors
      @SchillBrothersOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I planned for roughly 2500 calories per day. I think my food bag weighed in at 9lbs. I ended up ditching some bars and picked up some cheese.

      Schill Brothers Outdoors I don’t know how you did it with the most calorically dense known hiking foods coming in at 1.5 - 2 lbs. a day, but wow! 9 lbs for 7 days is incredible!
