    Well here it is 6th of March 2019 I watched your video during my lunch break at work. After work I went to the local Walmart found the Nido in the Latino Isle i purchased a small container of it purchased a box of Grape-Nuts I also purchased the cane sugar they had all three. I went home assembled it as you instructed. I was very pleased and amazed thank you for sharing your passion with others. I enjoyed it. And I will be using it and packing it future hiking outings. Thank you👍👍

    Great ideas and just what I was looking for. Here are a couple of additional backpacking ideas. Granola with powdered tang, very tasty cold or hot on a winter morn. Also Steel ground outmeal with chia seeds, raisins, brown sugar, butter buds or whatever. Prepackage at home and add water to it the night before, for a short cooking time in morning. Instant oatmeal is just a filler and should be avoided which is what it sounds like you do. Getting ready to try Nido for the first time. Thanks

    • @KurtPapke
      @KurtPapke  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard of the Tang on cereal thing, but haven't had the courage to try it yet. I east the steel cut oats at home, but too much cook time on the trail. I'll have to try the cold soak some time. You'll like Nido, it's great stuff. Store in the freezer to prevent rancidity.

    Down with packets of oatmeal or cream of wheat... after eating enough of that _rap to begin to make u feel full look at the amount of sodium that is being consumed at one setting. This disturbs the blood pressure and that affects ur trail performance and endurance. Listen to this guy and put ur own cereals for breakfast 2gethr !!!

Sorry I can't recall brand name but there is a pancake mix that come in a plastic bottle that you just add water and shake to make the batter. Just take that and pour it into individual servings in small ziplocks. A serving is usually 2 or 3 hotcakes just open your zip lock pour in appropriate amount of water mix and pour and cook the hot cakes. No mess and as quick as boiling water. They are delicious and gives you a healthy meal and you can add dry fruit or what ever you want to add extra flavor in the batter or while cooking chocolate chips are yummy that way. You can find dehydrated soy, rice, and even potato milk

    Sorry if I missed it, but grape nuts can be served hot just like oatmeal. Great for those of us who want to keep our teeth intact. :-p I love the flavor of grape nuts. Also dollar tree has started carrying freeze dried fruit! .71oz pkg. One serving size. I've found and tried strawberry, apple and peach, all great.

      Yes, in fact if you serve it hot it really brings out the barley aroma, which reminds me of my beer brewing days. I’ve seen some of the small packages of freeze dried fruit, but they were speedy. I’ll have to check out the dollar store. Thanks for the tip!

    No dehydration... uses Nido. But I get what you were meaning. ;-) Honestly though my breakfasts are a quality trail bar (one with lots of nuts and fruit, not as much cereal) and get going.

    • @KurtPapke
      @KurtPapke  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I know lots of hikers that start out with a bar, but I like the ritual of actually preparing a breakfast even if it’s just adding water.

      @@KurtPapke LOL I get where you're coming from but I have enough ritual with packing my kit up in the morning. Certainly if I was going to spend a day in the same spot I'd love the ritual of brekky.

    how about carnation powdered milk or any kind of powdered milk to use

    • @KurtPapke
      @KurtPapke  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, if you like lowfat. It can be tough to get enough fat on the trail as freeze-dried or dehydrated meals are very low in fat. If you are consuming a lot of olive oil, ghee, etc. then by all means use the lowfat powdered milk. Hope this makes sense.

    I never skimp camping...except for the freeze dried foods which are overpriced. I’ll buy lots of foods I wouldn’t normally buy. No time to be cheap when you’re on vacation on the trail. You’re not paying for a luxury vacation in hotels with dinner out everyday, splurge and you’ll enjoy the outdoors that much more.

    • @KurtPapke

      No. Most of the meals require adding water, you just don't need a dehydrator to make them.

    As someone who never drinks milk and doesn't like any type of cold cereal, I'll pass.
    Warm oatmeal, instant coffee, maybe some dried fruit any day.
    Rice with sugar, works as well.
