    • @LearnUpstairs
      @LearnUpstairs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Hey Alberto, I simply turned the base layer off. Since we used the inner part of the surface to add the texture, by hiding the base layer we automatically get that white space.
      But copying the base layer, placing it above everything and then hitting Ctrl+I as Sir Dancelot said would also work similarly

    Do you think using a solid black layer and adjust opacity or an exposure layer is better for making Shadows?

    • @LearnUpstairs
      @LearnUpstairs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Josh!
      A solid black layer with a mask works just the same, it's just a different workflow.
      But now an exposure layer (or even levels, curves and so on) won't work on every type of texture, and you would need to dial the settings for every layer.
      It's not the best solution if you want to get a uniform shadow across the drawing, which for me is important because you don't want it to be distracting the viewer or drawing more attention than needed.

      @LearnUpstairs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Photoshop is not the best place to do this. I'd suggest exporting correctly from your CAD or BIM software. Or as I sometimes do, run the pdf base through Illustrator first to correct any line issues, then import the .Ai file intro photoshop as a linked file.
      So now you will have a linked workflow and any changes you might need to do in Illustrator down the road will automatically update in your Photoshop file.

    Why photoshop? & not illustrator? considering the raster vs vector, I would prefer vector output in my portfolio pdf with min. file size and no quality loss.

    • @LearnUpstairs
      @LearnUpstairs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Rohan, you can use Illustrator to do almost the same thing I did in this video. But I wouldn't use the min file size and quality loss as the reason to go with Illustrator
      If you need extra quality just use a bigger canvas. And for the majority of uses we need, digital or physical, honestly... photoshop results go by just fine.
      The best-case scenario for me is to combine both and use them simultaneously with a linked file.
      In Photoshop you have a lot more control over overall image settings like contrast, texture, and detail, whereas in Illustrator you're looking for more of a "blocky" and "vectorized" result.
      And also in Photoshop, we don't need to be worried about closing shapes, or perfectly overlapping lines to create the desired result. Photoshop is a lot more forgiving.
      But again, at the end of the day, it's not that one is better than the other, just use what software you're most comfortable with.

    • @rohanthe123456
      @rohanthe123456 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LearnUpstairs thanks for your immediate reply.
      Yeah I agree with you, we cannot say one is better than other, depends on usage.
      My main concern is, after we produce a raster output in photoshop, and say we are combining all artboards in a pdf say in indesign,
      so at the end, ofcourse everybody would like to keep the file size min. Here, if vector graphics are there, we can easily manage a less than 5-10mb file. But same cannot be said for raster outputs, as compressing it would reduce the quality.
      I have know photoshop for many years, and yes its forgiving and provides a quick output when compared to illustrator, but coz of the above mentioned things, since a last few years I've shifted to illustrator. And thus the problem I'm facing is, I end up spending hours on finishing a good result in illustrator, when actually it could have taken mins in photoshop.

      @Upstairs ?

    • @LearnUpstairs
      @LearnUpstairs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rohanthe123456 Hey Rohan, didn't see your reply here. Sorry!
      No matter what, vector results will look crispier and have "more quality" than raster ones.
      But that doesn't mean that work done in PS isn't usable for print stuff.
      If you're putting together PDFs in InDesign, you need to keep in mind where this result will be displayed so that you can compress the work done in PS accordingly.
      If you're going to show it on a 1080p screen, you don't need the file to be 5000 pixels wide for example.
      Also, I found that saving as an image file, and then converting the individual image file as PDF seems to generate a smaller file afterall.
      But also, if you're going to import the PS result into InDesign you don't need it to be in PDF. It can come directly from a JPG, PNG, or even TIFF.

      Hey Natasha! Thanks for the feedback and I’m sorry to hear that. But you must understand that a video for TH-cam needs to be quicker, and therefore I can’t show every little step of the process. An image like this can take more than an hour to make, and very few people would sit and watch it all.
      So the videos need to deliver a lot in very short amount so that I keep the retention higher and youtube shows this video to more people.
      But in a course that’s a totally different story. When you enroll in one of my courses, I’m not competing for your attention anymore. So I can dive into every little detail, and all the lessons are created explaining it all.
      There I can spend hours to explain all the concepts, moves and workflow to create the images. And that’s exactly what I do.
      So in short two different places, with two different approaches. TH-cam is for quicker content, more focused on overall tips and tricks. But then courses a full workflow is taught with attention to every little detail.
      I encourage you to watch the free previews we have over our courses to see if that suits you. I’m sure they won’t disappoint you. 😁
