Bought this on cassette when it came out in ‘86 and had it blasting in my new ‘86 Cutlass Supreme w/t-top as I was driving into Atlanta moving away from home for the first time. This song is special!
This album used crazy guitar effects to create the "keyboard" sounds. Steve Howe (Yes, Asia) and Steve Hackett (Genesis) wanted as many sounds as possible to be made via guitar. If any keyboards were used it was minimal. Thus, the name of the band: GTR (guitar). Unfortunately, they couldn't get the guitar effects to translate to playing live, so they had to employ a keyboard player then.
I had this "tape", my sophomore year in college. These guys were a super-group, a combination of Yes and Asia. I would have liked to see more from them.
Wow this is a blast from the past! I haven't listened to them in many moons. Steve Hackett and Steve How are a great guitar duo! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
@@csphoenix9 lmao! of course, and no disrespect to him! When i was listening to GTR i was 15? 16? At that time in my life the guitar was the only thing that existed in the universe! Lol
Great song from a great album, it was a really interesting project combining the two prog rock guitar legends, and there was no keyboards, the two Steves experimenting with guitar synths. And love Max Bacon's high end soaring vocals. Other great tracks from the album are "The Hunter" , " Jeckyl and Hyde" , "Reach out" , "Toe the line" and "Imagining" Best wishes
AND It was produced by Geoff Downes....keyboardist of YES, ASIA and BUGGLES Not as the.prog approach of the 70s but a very decent effort.... I.love the "imagining" last track, AND of.course "sketches in the sun" howe solo track
I am a proud Gen X’er and I was 20 when this great song came out. I’m so happy you reviewed this beautiful song! At the time, I was working two jobs and going to school. I was exhausted but I just kept moving. This song spoke volumes to me. It’s profound, inspirational and encouraging! I used to crank it (Gen X term) as loudly as possibly! GTR was short for guitar. It was formed by two major English guitarists; Steve Howe - the epic guitarist of Yes and Steve Hackett - the iconic Genesis guitarist. They both are classically trained and decided to form a band together. It was mind blowing! Absolutely mind blowing! Blending all the different genres with incredible lyrics! Thank you again for taking the time to listen to this beautiful song!
Bought the album on cassette in 1986 and forgot just how good this song is …still sounds fabulous …..great vocals, soaring guitars, catchy, poppy and proggy- the gladiator part you refer to ….Love it !
LO MÁXIMO!!! JOYA ENTRE JOYA. Y YO ESTUVE EN ESE MOMENTO HISTÓRICO DE ESTE TEMA CUANDO SONABA. ESTA GRAN SUPER BANDA !! HOY NO HAY NADA ASÍ. 👏👏👏👏👏🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸🎸
I hope you gave the rest of this album a chance. Honestly. I bought this when it came out in 1986, and it was definitely one of my favourite albums of that year. I listen to it now, and there is not one bad song on it. I wasn't blown over by "The Hunter" when i was 19 years old, but now I listen to and think, nope! That song is class too. It does not have one bad song on the whole album. I really recommend it.
John Slop I laughed out loud and smiled the entire time! I know this song well. I graduated in 1986 when this CD came out and was extremely disappointed when the band fell apart 1 year after in 1987 due to financial reasons. It was so fun to anticipate a reaction from you when I knew there was going to be change ups throughout the song. It was my exact sentiments when I first heard the song. Thanks for your spontaneous and spot on reactions. Loved it! Have to watch again! :)
I remember when this came out, there was a one-word review of this album in one of the rock mags: GTR = SHT. The guy who wrote that was a well-known pundit.
Hackett from Genesis, Howe from Yes. And the rest. It was a collaboration and if my memory serves me they only did one album but listen to the production. Fantastic.
Dude, check out YES Drama, you'll LOVE it! The Song "Tempus Fugit" will BLOW your mind bro!! AND YES, this song is beautiful, I remember it fondly from the 80's..
You should check this Chilean band “Los Jaivas” start with these 2 songs. “Mira Ninñita” and “Tarka y Ocarina” I like how you pick the subtle changes I love those in the song. I love this song
GREAT reaction to a great song, John! Check out (you will LOVE) 'Tempus Fugit' by Yes, and 'Under The Milky Way' by The Church. Both great, well crafted songs.

I was blasting this song in my 1985 VW GTI in Atlanta leaving for college in Athens in 1986.

I think I still have my tape! Must look! Loved it ! : )
Asia was also a super group! With members formerly of Yes, Uriah Heep, the buggles, and the Palmer from Emerson lake and Palmer.
Robbie Robertson "Somewhere down the crazy river"
The whole Robbie Robertson self-titled album is amazing. Withstands the test of time.
Hells Kitchen baby!
Wow this is a blast from the past! I haven't listened to them in many moons. Steve Hackett and Steve How are a great guitar duo! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
And Jonathan Mover on drums
@@csphoenix9 lmao! of course, and no disrespect to him! When i was listening to GTR i was 15? 16? At that time in my life the guitar was the only thing that existed in the universe! Lol
Jonathan Mover was briefly in Marillion
Wow, I haven’t heard this song for at least 35 years, damn I’m old.🤣
You're not old, your getting better!
Me too, but I listen to this song often!
Nice groove eh!!!

Yep. Not many ppl know what gtr meant.
One album wonder... But what an album...
Great album. Saw them on this tour back in ‘87 I think. Howe and Hackett killed it
Yup, had this on cassette. 👍
Forgot all about this song. Great choice by your patron!

First time I heard this, I thought it was a new Styx song. I loved it and it stuck with me for 40 years.

My favorite 80s song, I was about 9 when this song hit the radio and it was unlike anything I had heard before
I remember when this came out, there was a one-word review of this album in one of the rock mags: GTR = SHT. The guy who wrote that was a well-known pundit.
I had forgotten what an incredibly, well crafted song this is. Geoff Downes produced it, if I remember correctly.
Always remember that Rush was a greater Influence than you thought. ❤
Met this song sometime in the 90s and I instantly loved it, gonna check the whole album again I havent heard it in quite some years
I have this album I bought back then. Very "Asia" - like. Good album.
Thank you so much for doing this song. Awesome 🤟
I'm pretty sure I have the 45 single of this 🤔. Dang, now I'm going to have to go hunt through old boxes to find it. 🙄😂
Love the band and the Steve's. Hackett has some great albums
Great breakdown of a great song.. so much talent brought together from other bands.. sad it didn't last..
Hackett from Genesis, Howe from Yes. And the rest. It was a collaboration and if my memory serves me they only did one album but listen to the production. Fantastic.
Thx John!! Great review!!!
Saw them live in 86. Great show.
Check out "Toe the Line" by them. CLASSIC! "The Hunter" rocks too.
True Yes sounding, Don't know the members name, but he brought yes to this song.
80s supergroup. Steve Howe from Yes, Steve Hackett from Genesis and more...

Only came out with one album. Competing egos between the Steve's.
Howe is genius.
if it sounds like a cross between genesis and asia.....its because it is
All the synth were Roland pickups on guitars no keys
Sadly only one album. Check out Hunter
Drummers creed lol😅
I'm a big fan of this song but only one other of this bans (Only The Hunter).
You just.cut the.hackett figures...
Steve Hackett and crew were quite the band. This voice sounds just like Dennis DeYoung.
