    The demon in the well is Despair. It lure people in with something that 'comfort' its victim, like how they lure in the farmer's family with promise of surviving the blight. It's trying to lure Spite using Rook's scent. Rook is comfort to Spite.

    There's an interepretation of Spite that I really like: Spite (the emotion) isn't inherently negative. You can do negative, hurtful things out of spite, certainly. But you can also LIVE out of spite. You can keep going out of spite. Bite down on spite through pain and hurt and loss and grief and come out the other side.
    Spite isn't a malicious spirit, really. He's abrasive and loud, but not malicious outside of specific instances where he's actively provoked, either by Lucanis deliberately ignoring him or Illario kill-stealing.
    According to Emmrich, even spirits of the same emotion can express themselves in different ways, and subsequently embody different aspects of that emotion: curiosity can be an innocent urge to see what's over that next hill, or what happens if we light a match in a barn full of hay.
    Perhaps because of how Spite and Lucanis came together, Spite is more a spirit of the positive aspects of spite: the living, the growing, the pushing forward out of sheer spite towards those who would see you broken and beaten or dancing to their tune rather than your own. Hence why he makes a point of dragging Lucanis kicking and screaming through a mental health journey... out of SPITE.

    • @ashec.6824
      @ashec.6824 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      I forget which of Lucanis' writers said this - I want to say it was Mary Kirby but I'm not 100% sure off the dome - but when they were asked if Spite would ever go back to Determination, they basically said "He can change again, and probably will with more time spent with Lucanis, but he'll always be the embodiment of 'no' in some way." Which I think sums up Spite quite well.
      "No" isn't inherently malevolent. Refusal to accept something isn't evil unless you're refusing to choose good. Denying someone something isn't cruel if that person would misuse what was given. You can say 'no' to evil just as easily as you can wield it for evil, which you can actually see from pre-Ossuary Lucanis. For all of his sterling reputation as an assassin, he's willingly screwed up contracts that would have otherwise forced him to kill innocents, and put many others (like the Wigmaker Job) at risk for the sake of getting innocents out and giving the especially cruel 'special treatment' in the form of particularly brutal and humiliating deaths. There's a reason Spite was drawn to Lucanis in the first place - Lucanis has *always* embodied it in some way himself.
      And in all honesty, Spite *never* shows any particular inclination towards outright evil, even when he lashes out at Lucanis - Lucanis just assumes that's what he's going for given his nature as a demon, along with his own trauma preventing him from seeing the cruel way he's (unknowingly) keeping Spite contained until Inner Demons. Even those sleep walking attempts that everyone assumes are him trying to take over and kill Lucanis were Spite not understanding space and trying to walk himself out of the false Ossuary, which stop entirely after Inner Demons when they're on the same page.
      For all that Spite harasses Lucanis, he had legitimate reason to do so while he was trapped in Lucanis' Ossuary. Lucanis was actively (but again, unintentionally) breaking the deal that they made, and Spite was still 'polite' enough to try and make Lucanis understand and sort it out between them. It just never went well because Spite (understandably) can't comprehend the complexities of human emotions and how to deal with them without Rook's help, and Lucanis (also understandably) doesn't realize he's doing anything wrong, and assumes that the demon wanting to talk feelings is probably a manipulation tactic and doesn't want to expose Rook to that.
      From the very start, Spite's desire to cause harm are pretty much always aimed at a justified target - Zara for what she did to them, Illario for denying them justice when they finally got to her, the Evanuris for the danger they pose, Solas for what he does to his and Lucanis' emotional support mortal Rook, and Lucanis himself for (from Spite's POV) going back on their deal while Spite continued to hold up his end of the bargain. And on the other side of things, he never makes any effort to legitimately threaten, let alone harm his allies in those moments when Lucanis does lose control, despite several direct confrontations with Taash during his escape attempts. Spite is still embodying 'no', but in terms of where and how he directs it, he's a lot closer to Pre-Ossuary Lucanis' morals than either of them seem to fully realize.

      @ashec.6824 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      I really do wonder when exactly the Determination -> Spite transformation happened. Like Lucanis has only known him as Spite, so it wasn't an Anders/Justice situation where Lucanis himself had a role in it. But was he in the Fade as Spite when Zara forced him into the Ossuary, or was he still Determination who was corrupted into Spite and then 'fed' to Lucanis?
      Because in the case of the latter, where the Ossuary is directly tied into him becoming Spite, Rook helping him leave Lucanis' mental Ossuary could have started the change back.

      As far as I can tell the only spirit who doesn't is Compassion in the Hall of Valor, and I honestly figured it was because even if Spite is becoming more like his 'old self' in how he acts and thinks, he still seems to see *himself* as Spite, even correcting Solas when he calls him Determination. Even if he's evolving beyond what he was before being put into Lucanis, Spite is content to be Spite which Compassion would pick up on and go along with. Like how Cole knows with Krem in Inquisition.

      Read this excerpt on acquiring Solas' personal quest: All New Faded For Her:
      Inquisitor: I thought spirits wanted to find their way into this world.
      Solas: Some do, certainly, just as many Orlesian peasants wish they could journey to exotic Rivain. But not everyone wants to go to Rivain. My friend is an explorer, seeking lost wisdom and reflecting it. It would happily discuss philosophy with you, but it had no wish to come here physically.
      Not all spirits are the same. Do you associate Justice with immaturity? What comes to your mind when you hear about justice as a concept? Of course with great seriousness since we're dealing with laws, about what is fair and what is not. Of course Justice has to be stern while correcting wrongs (whether by primitive justice or restorative justice).
      Spite, meanwhile, is an emotion. Anger to be specific. Many people want to do things out of petty spite, just to inflict harm to someone consequences be damned. Of course Spite will look and act immature while protecting Lucanis' well-being (since anger's main purpose is to protect oneself from harm). And Maker help you if you're responsible for his and Lucanis' current predicament. And being on a healthy environment help Spite exercise his nature without losing himself and Lucanis, which Anders and Justice didn't have.
