I used a HPG kit bag 5x week land surveying and extra duty on the weekends hiking, hunting, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, Biking, etc. They are awesome and absolutely bulletproof. I picked up a heavy kit bag for bigger loadouts and love that too. I also carry full size guns in them no problem.
I decided to try a chest rig a year ago, and now I never go in the woods without it. It's just so convenient to carry a firearm, emergency gear, radio, phone, etc. in a readily-accessible location. I also like that even if something were to somehow happen to my main pack, I would still have some essential items on my person. Especially for SAR use in the mountains, some redundancy can be critical. A chest pack is a great option for that.
I have been attempting to adopt Prepared Airman's philosophy of the chest bag. They are a great way to keep essential gear at the ready so you don't have to stop and go digging into your backpack for gear. The trick is definitely not overloading them.
That's a nice pack! I've been rocking a Ribz for years as my edc pack. It holds a lot of small items. I did end up getting a newer version a few months ago because the original had a crappy back piece that finally fell apart. I love that I can unzip it to cool off and that it doesn't have that military look. Definitely still gets looks though.
Those chest packs and fanny packs are perfect for fishing. I bring a very large tackle box, leave it in my vehicle, and load my packs up with whatever I may need as I walk the water and fish. Even when I have a backpack, I still take a fanny pack. They are great for things you don't want in your pockets.
Yes! Great timing. Just wore a Wynex chest rig this past weekend. Both camping and in town. Great to have empty pants pockets + the convenience of all I needed right in front of me. $21 on Amazon. Before chest rigs I would turn a small hydro pack around to the front ha ha. It worked though.
Agree with the balancing aspect when paired with a back pack. It’s really easy to over fill the chest rig and get front heavy. Also have found that the higher and tighter on the chest it’s worn, the less fatiguing it seems to be after several miles of hiking.
I have heard good things about Hill people gear. Looked into them and their stuff is stupidity, ridiculously expensive. Thanks for these better options.
G'day Aaron, they do make sense on some level, though personally would annoy the hell out of me. Re; fishing ... up front I'm more of a saltwater guy, but same principle, if you've got a rocky shore line, (slippery or not), I really want to be able to look straight down at my foot placement. I reckon a vest is the go, mine is so svelte and light weight with more pockets than you can poke a stick at. You can distribute items evenly around your torso, (spreads the weight and the bulk), and avoids rummaging around for "that thing" at the bottom of a pouch. No straps to contend with either and if fishing in the rain, a WP rain jacket can zip up straight over the top. Probably make more sense hiking, i.e. counterbalance pack weight to some extent, but again I have enough pockets in trousers and tops to keep those quick access items at hand. I dont wish to poo poo the idea, I'm sure they suit many, ...... just my two bobs worth mate. Dig that scenery btw. Cheers Duke.
My only complaint is the one I got is like yours and I wanted my bigger bing band in it, but I love wearing it. Especially when being very active at work and play
Don’t use guns so not really sure if this would be something I want to use backpacking especially when I’m trying to keep my weight down. Knife stays in my pocket bear spray on my side.

what type of velcro compatible holster do you use for the glock?

Totally! It's definitely about finding that balance.
Oh great the prepared airman lol
Use Hill People Gear SAR Full when hiking. Keep my XDM 10MM in it. Also has snacks, meds, phone, knife, bear spray attached to the bottom. LOVE IT.

Love my Hill people gear pack! Might give this a go.
Love my Hill People Gear chest rig... Top shelf kit!

That is awesome! I am glad you are finding a chest rig useful.
Call me old fashioned, but I think they're flat out goofy.
Chest packs are great for fishing or packing a gun!

Expensive, yes. Bombproof and will last forever? USA sourced and made? Also yes. Worth it? Again yes.
They're not stupid when there's a .45 ACP inside!

I have a coworker that swears by his chest rig.
