    It does not have to sound big. It has to sound beautiful. That´s the main rule of Bel Canto. This man opened his mouth and big drops of honey came out.

      Yitzhakhazak I totally agree but to say the truth they say that when he was singing in the Arena di Verona people could hear him out of the Arena. So he had also a very sound voice

      Very true, but he did have a big voice. The old bel canto technique carried more than modern day wimpy singing.

    Great!!!!, his holding of a little book while singing, resembles to me another great bel canto singer; John Mc Cormack.
    Me as a tenor, tend to think and ask to myself why they are holding this little book in their hands?...I guess it helps them to concentrate ...as well as giving them a special charm.
    Anyhow, always is a pleasure to learn by watching and hearing this "unsurpased" great singers!!!!. Thanks for sharing!!!!

    • @Greeneyes3005
      @Greeneyes3005 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      John Schofield
      My father always held a little book in his hands when he sang this aria, I believe it’s from act 2 of the opera as Federico reads the letters of l'Arlesiana and ponders them with his broken heart.
      ‘The book’ of her letters is a prop that helps puts a singer into character as well,
      I think ‘when in concert’. When I add this aria to my repertoire, I think I’ll sing it with a little book as well.
      Schipa’s performance here is truly superb! an inspiration for all us tenors who want to sing with true Bel Canto technique, all through this aria his mouth is never opened overly wide maintaining the same form whatever note high or low, or whatever phrase he’s singing .. hence his superb projection all coming from proper breathing and diaphragm control.

    • @ralphoperaphile
      @ralphoperaphile 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Greeneyes3005 I believe that I read somewhere that Schipa did it to ensure that he didn't fiddle or make unnecessary gestures. I have just listened to half a dozen versions of this and realised that as much as I love Bjorling's, this is the greatest.

    • @Greeneyes3005
      @Greeneyes3005 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ralphoperaphile he did, there is. another comment about that on here.
      I was always taught to keep my hands by my sides, Because you can tend to move them about to much, in concert stood next to a piano, it’s just not form..
      But in performing an opera it’s different of course, so holding the book in concert is really a very cunning plan!
      and… I totally agree! His performance here is truly superb! I love it!! 😀

And after all, Schipa's family was present to the shooting... More: Schipa always looked beautiful while singing, due to the perfect no-struggle technique.

Personally, the Ferruccio Tagliavini recording on Fonit Cetra from 1941 wins hands down, it is for me the definitive performance of Lamento di Federico by a long way.

    One of the most enjoyable performances by one of my very beloved tenor.If it gets any better than this-I'm scared to even go there for fear of my heart exploding. As his brother once said-I f he had the beauty of voice as Gigli along with his singing ability and technique-he'd have been the best ever of them all. Not to say that he was not one of the all time greats regardless.TY Candy for sending and dogieblitz for posting this very rare jewel.

    Schipa and Tagliavini sing this with so much feeling and heartbreak. The text is the number one priority. There are "piano" markings throughout. It shouldn't be muscled. And I don't miss the unwritten high B at the end, which some singers seem to make their highest priority.

Perfetto in tutto !
