    Mario was given his voice from God. It is given once in a lifetime and there will never be another. He had a magic when he sang the color was magnificent and the range was gorgeous. He left us beautiful recordings and movies. He played his idol Caruso. God took him too soon but will always be able to hear him in our hearts. I know he is singing up in heaven. When I get there I will be able to tell him how much I have missed him. God bless him!!!

    I saw this live in January 1957 at the Newcastle City Hall and then again in March 1957 - the same concert, and Mario Lanza was magnificent. No amplifiers or microphones - a pianist and his voice. Never to be forgotten. I have never heard a better voice since then and I have heard so many tenors, and some great ones like Pavarotti - I saw him live, too but Mario Lanza was simply a one-off in every way.

    AMAZING!!!! JUST WOW. Shear emotion, power, beauty, and voice. If you aren't going to sing from the heart, I don't care how beautiful your voice is, how powerful, what range you have...do me a favor....just stay home. He had it ALL. First, must come the heart. If you don't have the heart, how can you get anyone else to FEEL the music???

    • @TonyPartington
      @TonyPartington  ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Ore Baso, it could not be put any better. And it is exactly what you said about, "First, must come the heart." That is it! Yes, Mario has a beautiful voice. A naturally beautiful and special voice. But as you say, to have a beautiful voice, a powerful voice is fine. Indeed, one may make a decent living singing. Lanza had a voice of both beauty and power. Great beauty and magnificent power. However, it is what Mario coupled those two God given talents to: It was his heart. It was his heart, his mind, his soul, his all. It was this, almost unearthly, gift that set Mario apart. He lived his music. It inhabited him. And as his audience, his friends he is asking us in. Into the magical world that is Mario Lanza.

    0:37 I love the fact that the recording caught Lanza humming for a second as he catches the pitch of the music as Callinicos plays. It’s such an endearingly personal moment. What more can be said about the magnificent sound that Lanza produced? When I was 14 in 1969, I saved my weekly allowance and ordered a multi LP Lanza collection that Readers Digest was offering. My aunt had a better stereo than our family; one of those large Magnavox stereo cabinets with the turntable and AM/FM radio. I chose to hear “Vesti la Giubba” played first. The sound of his voice was astonishing. I had heard the voice from most of his films, but only through small television speakers. His films would sometimes be shown locally on Sat. afternoons. My mom and aunt, both born in the early 1920s, were great admirers of Mario Lanza, as I have been for almost 60 years. Thank you for posting Lanza’s beautiful rendition of the Lamento. Cheers

      Thanks so very much for the kind words regarding this performance. This, to my mind, is one of very greatest performances of this beautiful aria. You're right, it's a lovely moment when Mario hums before his entrance. This recording of this entire concert is precious to me. I had the great good fortune to study for several years with Maestro Constantine Callinicos. It was like stepping back in time. I heard some wonderful stories: Of his work with Mario (which was extensive), as well his friendship with him. Anyway, it was a fond period in my career. Ciao! - Tony

      @TonyPartington  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Arturo! Yes, I studied with Maestro Constantine Callinicos from 1977-1981 while I was living and singing in NYC. Stories? Oh so many. Maestro and I became friends and often after a coaching session he would ask me to stay afterwards and have some Scotch and Taramosalata (Greek caviar spread). I cherish those days and that time in the world when all of life seemed simpler and kinder. I had asked, after we had been working for a few months, if he would help me with my solfeggio (sight singing). It was okay, but I thought the Maestro could help me improve. He told me one day, when we were working on a particularly hard sight singing exercise he had given me, "Tony, I know you love Mario but I have to tell you, he hated to work on improving his sight singing. If you wanted to say a truly foul word to Mario, just say solfeggio." On a serious note though, Constantine told me many times over the years how the brilliance, power and beauty of Lanza's voice was impossible to truly capture on record. He told me, "Mario simply had the greatest voice I have ever heard." And I believe and believe him. Ciao!

      I love your comment about the humming at the start of the Aria because when I was 18 in 198 I mentioned to a 50 year old Opera lover that the sound recordist hummed before he sang. He said no it was Mario as he was on the front row of the hall at the concert. He said even his hum could be heard very clearly.

      Hi John. So glad you enjoyed this. Mario's accompanist for this recital was Maestro Constantine Callinicos. I had the great good fortune of studying with Maestro Callinicos for four years while I lived and sang in New York City. He was a wonderful man and very kind to me as a young singer. We spoke of Mario often. He told me about this concert and how initially, Mario had be rather taken aback by the size of the venue and audience. The had several hundred people seated onstage behind Mario and Costa. I'm not sure of the exact total of people there that night of January 16, 1958, but I believe the general audience capacity for Royal Albert Hall is around 8000. Anyway, I am so glad we have this recording as a testament to what a brilliant and magnificent voice Mario had. Ciao!

    It's been 61yrs since Lanza has passed and tenors to this day try to copy him and of course all have failed. There was only ONE Mario Lanza and like he always would say when people asked him how he could sing like no other Mario would always point to heaven and say "It's God's Voice, I'm just the humble caretaker of it". Mario was right, as it truly was a gift from heaven. I had the pleasure of talking with Damon , Mario's oldest son who told me when his dad got mad he would raise his voice and the lights in the house would go out and the lamps would actually shake. Terry Robinson his lifelong friend who eventually adopted the children I also met told me the recordings Mario made didn't begin to capture the true essence and raw power of Lanza's voice . He told me if you heard him in person his voice was so big it would scare the hell out of you . It was a truly unique voice only God could have created. It was at times the most lyric lightest softest tenor ala Pavarotti,Gedda then it would change to a Spinto timbre tenor, ala Di Stephano,Bergonzi and then change again to a deep dramatic tenor ala the other Mario that is Del Monaco. Mario had all three qualities in one voice and he mastered them perfectly. No other Tenor past or present had that gift. Thank God for the preservation of his recordings. We will never hear the likes of a Mario Lanza again.

Ever heard of the laws of physics? Shattering glass or putting the lights out( hahaha) is physically impossible. In theory, sopranos is the first group of singers to turn to in this case as they have the highest frequencies in their voices needed for such impacts. Theoretically..... in practice it never worked. Ever heard such fairy-tales of del Monaco, Rosvaenge, Corelli (real huge voices)? No. Of course, Mario's son, Weiler etc. helped spreading the myth created by Hollywood to keep the buck running......ever heard of people who exaggerate enormously or even lie just to lift their importance and get a ray of other people's fame? Happens everyday- here on youtube and social media in general. Before commenting on something commentators shouls deliver a valid proof of their eligibility to keep a discussion solid and realistic.

      @@jenspflug7473 Well, well, you jump right to absolute conclusions without bothering to find out any facts at all , you must be one of the mindless Biden voters. FYI , I sang tenor roles at both the NYC opera and Met with some of the premier leading Soprano's such as Beverly Sills and Eva Marton, and Renee Fleming just to name a few. I was personal friends with Tenor James McCracken and in my opinion he had the biggest dramatic tenor voice of any tenor . I heard many of the high tier tenors of the 60's, 70'sand 80's . I've surmised you know nothing about the actual law of physic's. It's not always the highest frequencies of sound but sheer decibel volume. I personally saw McCracken knock a cup holder... wood mind you, right off a bathroom rack with just one High C. So, as far as Lanza go's his son nor Sam Weiler had absolutely no reason at all to fabricate false stories and lie to me and neither did Terry Robison . Let's hear your credentials and your valid proofs ? I venture to say you've never even sung in the shower and enjoy printing out personal attacks just to see where the ink splatters.

    Thank you so much! I was brought up on a diet of Mario. My mother was an avid fan. My father took her to see the films, bought her records and later on vhs tapes of the Films. Certain arias she ironed to, certain arias she cried to and it was only natural that her enthusiasm would rub off on her children. I went on to study music. I have listened to, and loved, many tenors over the years especially Pavarotti but no one has ever matched the beautiful sound of Mario (and most tenors since Mario have used him as their inspiration). This was so very Special because it was a live recording as opposed to a studio recording so it was lovely to hear his voice, especially with just the piano accompaniment. His voice had to be a gift from God there can be no other explanation for such beauty. I am only sad that my mother never got to hear him live.....and I am sad for me too. I would also have loved to have been there with my mother and just wallowed in the ethereal magic of his voice ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

You see, I studied voice and coached some operatic and musical roles with Maestro Constantine Callinicos (Mario's accompanist for this concert). Costa was very close to Mario and was a dear friend of his. During my time with the Maestro we spoke often of Mario. By the time I was working with Maestro Callinicos (1977-1982) he had worked with many world class tenors, yet he still said that Mario's voice was the greatest singing voice he had ever heard. Hi Clay. Thank you for your very kind words. I agree with you completely about Mario singing this beautiful and haunting aria. And also, like you, I love his live recordings. This one in particular is, to my ears (and heart) magical. Magical in a way that no studio recording can possibly capture. There is a very special facet of live performance, that being the audience. And Mario certainly knew how to connect with his audience. I think the audience elevated him vocally and artistically. By the way, there's an interesting story about the ossia (interpolation) of the high B-natural at the end. Cilea did not write it in the original score. However, when Beniamino Gigli first sang the role of Federico, Francesco Cilea was there. Gigli apparently felt the aria needed a true climax at the end so, he asked Cilea if he could add the unwritten B-natural. Cilea approved and told him to give it a try and the rest, as the say, is history.

There were of course certain exceptions. His performance at Grant Park in Chicago and the Hollywood Bowl in California come most immediately to mind. Those two venues were enormous and most all performances, at arenas that size, really had to be amplified. I am not sure of the exact number of attendees at the Royal Albert Hall concert, but I believe it was in excess of 8,000. Mario also performed, with his accompanist; conductor, pianist Constantine Callinicos, at a hall in Keil, Germany where the audience was over 10,000! This man's voice was probably the most natural voice for a Tenor. Sadly he was snatched up by the MGM movie house. Yes through that he brought Opera to the classes but sadly did not complete his main aim for himself the Operatic stage. However I still get emotional when I hear his voice. In the end MGM treated him like dirt despite his big earnings for them. Mr Lanza trusted too many people too much and died very young by depression by being deserted and used for too long.
