That is still quite beautiful singing. His “vibrancy” is slightly looser than his prime, but there is no surface scratch in his tone, and he still sings without effort. His Ah dispar vision from Manon is a landmark in recording history. Along with about 200 Italian songs!! He was a primo tenore for sure.
Schipa was loved by other greats. Pavarotti talks about him, Arrigo Pola talks about him, Franco Corelli. All of them have the highest words for him. Tito was a natural singer, he didn't have to distort his voice to make sounds to project his voice, he came naturally, there were no forced tones, nothing strained. Just the pure sound. In conclusion I dare to say, ultimately, the goal is to make beautiful music, at least in my world. And if so, I think they both accomplished that during the course of their careers. Be it Singer or Tenor they are a both a part of a very elite group of gifted people. I hold to an adage my intructor taught me... "The voice is never in question... it's what's done with it. A great voice is a great voice"

I think that there are about 5,000 singers who audition for the Met every year. There are other competitions too but many of those are duplicative. So lt's just accept 5,000. Lets also say 1,000 of those are tenors. Most are not too good but a handful are very good indeed. I'm saying that Schipa couldn't make it into the finals most years. Standards have gone way up, the population is larger, musical and vocal preparation are better, and people are healthier. The result is better tenors.

Ce document est tout simplement anthologique. L'interprétation va droit au coeur et transcende cette petite chanson, qui en apparence facile et simple, recèle des trésors émotionnels et constitue un magnifique moyen de démontrer ce que peut faire un artiste de tout premier ordre avec cette musique. Et non, malgré tout leur talent, ce ne sont pas les 'Trois Ténors' qui ont inventé l'art d'interpréter de la chanson populaire avec une voix d'opéra. Je suis également fasciné de constater comment, après une petite discussion somme toute assez banale avec l'animateur et la ''surprise'' de Schipa lui-même, ce dernier ait été malgré tout en mesure de rendre avec tant de justesse et d'intensité ce qu'il devait chanter par la suite. Bref, passer du banal au sublime en l'espace de trente secondes, ce n'est certainement pas un don commun. et Schipa avait une manière de 'saisir' la musique en la caressant tout à la fois qui est unique. Merci pour ce partage!
Maybe if you listen to a younger Schipa your opinion will change. If your judging his abilities based on this video, when he is clearly past his prime voice ( in my opinion) just isn't fair. If I may recommend "IL LAMENTO DI FEDERICO" it shows his effortless delivery, and pure unforced beauty of voice. Even though it was a PB and most likely pre-recorded... You can still hear how his voice sit's deep in his body... though his tones never carried lot of weight.
