    I’m so glad somebody finally has said this! I’ve wanted a few common plants and just couldn’t afford the high prices and it shouldn’t be that way. You give me hope that attitudes will eventually change in the plant community. Thanks for this!

      Exactly why I am happy to give away my cuttings, along with soil and pots!

  • @timbrelman
    @timbrelman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I am 55 years old. My love for indoor tropical plants started when I was around 6 or 7 years old.
    I've had so many so called hard to find plants over the years, and the prices for a four inch pot was as low as $2.45. Back in 1977 my grandfather bought me a Monstera Andonii, he paid pennies for it. The 1970"s and early 1980's was also a strong plant market.
    I would love to have another Monstera Adonaii, but I am not willing to pay $8.00 for a single nod that is not rooted out. Prices are ridiculous!
    Currently I have around 70 plants In my collection. Most are commonly found and simple to propagate. I normally give my cuttings away and they are established rooted and potted. I even make the macrame hangers if my friend wants one.
    Spider plants are one of the fastest growing and simple plants to grow and give starts away. To pay $15.00 for an eight inch pot is crazy. Saw a bonnie spider at Walnart in ten inch hanging starter pot for $25.00 it stayed and at Walmart for some one else to over pay.

    I’m glad u spoke about this. Monstera albos are a huge example. I want one so bad but the prices are absolutely outrageous for even a node. I can’t find anything cheaper than $300 for just a node and it’s sad

    • @TechplantChannel
      @TechplantChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      same, I have a lot of plants ive wanted for a few years now but its hard to justify that kind of price for a node of god knows what quality. Im hoping in the next few years they come down in price as people leave the hobby

    I keep waiting for the pink Princess prices to go down, I won’t buy one until they do. It could take awhile for that one to be prolific enough to drop prices but I’m patiently waiting. I figure eventually the big grower in Florida, costa farm, will cycle through anything popular enough. I’ve seen a fair few of the harder to find plants make their way this summer to Walmart and Lowe’s, so I expect to see more in the future. I noticed that the big box stores seem to follow social media trends and pay attention to what people are after.

      If Coasta Farms can mass produce the slow growing Trubii Moonlight then they will be mass producing the much faster growing PPP FOR SURE. I heard the PPP and Thai Constellations will be hitting the market on a mass scale soon.

    • @rdred8693
      @rdred8693 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GEOMETRICINK I know the Thai will. Costa Farms is waiting till they have enough to flood the market, and thereby avoid people trying to sell them for a higher mark up.
      Does that make sense?

  • @melissaking3481
    @melissaking3481 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Thanks you, Its like the Thai constellation in Australia. They once sold for $150 for a small rooted plant 2 year ago, But now people sell rotting out single nodes and wet sticks for $800 but people buy them, wee push the prices up, artificaly. There are warehouses full of plants and its all released at a controlled pace by the company's the own and grow them. If people just chill out, watch, wait, and sell our smaller cuttings for reasonable prices. we will saturate the market. The big companies will have to release more at once to get the $$$ they want or close to. We have the power to make the change in price. When enough of us see this, you will see the price come down.

    There is plant shops that sell 4 inch plants for $20. It's crazy bc I bought most of those exact same size and planr for 3.50 at my local supermarket 😂 I was going to get a monthly plant subscription but realized I had all the ones they had in a regular box that was not 80 a month for one single med sized plant. I passed on that. I could get that plant for under 20 at the same local supermarket. It blows my mind how the price online is unrealistic.

    I will definitely wait, I am fairly new to the houseplant world I have always focused on outdoors . I started with 7 angel trumpets and propagated at least 100 this winter, I planted around 50 and gave the other 50 away to friends and folks who drive by and admire my yard so they stop to talk and I end up gifting them a plant lol...I have a nursery wanting to buy from me next spring but as of now I am ok with just sharing my love for the plant. I cannot see myself paying $100 for no plant much less 2 leaves of a plant. I have learned alot from the plant community and I have started propagating my tradiscantia, spider plants and pothos I tried growing monstera deliciosa but with no success they rotted on me so may try again when I learn more . I am in no rush so gonna hang in there a bit longer to see how the plant prices go.

    i was plnning on mking an etsy store with a bunch of tissue culture plants grown from rare plants and after seeing that facebook post I have decided to single-handedly lower the price to 20 dollars for a pot full of obliqa to piss them off. i will be back with the link to the store once i get the plants and tissue culture setup.
    edit: I noticed you said you'd create a website, I think you should include a page that links to many people's stores so that we can have a hub to access each other's stock and create a unified web of home growers!

    The plant community turned from people who just loved plants and nurseries that mainly were family operations, into an acquisitions race, like getting the new iPhone or Gucci sunglasses or some other popular thing. The nurseries are still in business but new sellers started showing up like the toilet paper resellers buying up Costco's stock and selling toilet paper at ridiculous, price-gouging levels at the start of the pandemic.

I love trading and growing my collection that way. Just traded some manjula I had propagated for brandtianum. And a burle marx for syngonium varieties last week. Its so much more fun because you're not out any money and now I have a plant connected to a person. Hopefully with life slowly returning to normal plant swaps will be a thing again. You’re nice and you have quite a set up. I think for the average individual would be more reluctant to buy an expensive plant imported and sell their propagation for less than what they paid for the plant. For melanochrysum it’s relatively more affordable among the ‘rare’ plants but for some ultra rare plants importing is already a few hundred dollars. So what you’re doing is a noble effort! I don’t think most people would like to cover their apartment in plant babies just to break even and sell for $25 and taking care of many plants. They may not mind reselling an extra prop for slightly more than what they paid for since acclimating to household humidity takes more time than a plant shop with optimal conditions. I just got into plants last year and I know where by budget limits are. There are so many plants that are affordable so I feel like there is a plant for everyone at their price point. Part of the coveted and appeal for rare plants is the exclusive or hard to get a hold of. Mass plants to some just don’t hold the same demand. I’m also not in flavour of how that obliqua group is fixing price by pausing sales. They should just let the free market decide how much the price should be.

    I have met a lot of great people that allowed me to trade plants, some even the more high demand one.
    Where I live there has been FB GROUPS that does group import orders, basically the importers will tell the members how many plants are available by a supplier and then they will arrange everything - all we have to do is pick up and acclimate the plants. I have gotten some "rare" plants pretty low like $5-$30 CAD which also includes split shipping

    P-R-E-A-C-H!!!!! Pre-Pandemic years plants makes you happy because you LOVE plants! Now, Plants makes them happy because they're BOUJEE!!!! Plants nowadays are status not a hobby. The more expensive your plant, the better. You're right on plants should be propagated and should priced reasonably. Some sellers in my country 🇵🇭 got mad at me because I sell a very reasonable price on my Philodendron Florida Beauty. To Each Their Own, right? 🤣

    Amen brother! I'm seeing plants that used to be regularly available or 5 to 10 $being sold for hundreds , notably syngonium albo variegata. The last one I had I got at Home Depot 10 years ago for five bucks. I've been collecting plants for over 30 years and I have never seen things get as ridiculous as they have over the past two! If it's not new or botanically rare, people are being taken advantage of. They're just paying too much for their Instagram hits and TH-cam unboxings! I highly recommend a video by Nick Alexander called Monster Mania that very much covers the same topic! Exercise some patience people! Plants propagate, Trends come and go

    Plant prices are exactly why I don't buy from several channels I love to watch on youtube. They charge far more than what I think a easy to propagate plant is worth.. and the only difference between the channel sellers and the etsy shops I usually buy from... plant size? Ok so I get to watch a smaller plant grow and flourish in my care instead of having a larger plant that may die off a bit due to conditions being varied from where it was being kept.
    I dunno just my thought. I'd rather get the smaller plant as just a hobby keeper with no real intention of selling plants (I do trade and give things away all the time.. my cane angel wing begonia is my pride and joy and I have given away a slew of rooted cuttings after I trimmed it back from a 4ft tall plant to a 1ft again)
    Heck.. once I move maybe I can get some of the higher prices begonias and start working on what you just suggested. Just mass propagating them. They are lovely plants but with how easy they are to take cuttings from and how fast they grow (nearly year round if you keep them at proper temps) I don't understand the price of them at all..

    So tired of these people who buy up all the plants at the store like cebu blue pothos for example and and divide them into nodes to sell at the same price. New people without lots of spending money can’t get into the hobby because of these people.

      I have a bin $15, sphagnum $10, 1 light $25 with a years worth of electricity. So 50 bucks to raise 60 nodes of melanochrysum. If I sold 2 at 30 each I would have covered cost. Sell the next 58 nodes for 30 dollars each = 1740 dollars. Now If I was greedy I could sell for 75$ each and earn 4350. In relation to total sales the cost to raise is nothing

    Controlling supply is nothing new. Will you attack every industry? Diamonds for example of a very common mineral, but artificially they are withheld from the market to increase value. This will only stop when people refuse to pay the prices, not the sellers fault that some people pay silly money

    Bro pls, times have changed like it or lump it.
    Don't hate on sellers for wanting the best price possible. Some ppl like me are using plants to supplement what COVID took from our pay packets. I think to assume greed is the motivator is narrow minded, some of us aren't in this as 'hobby collectors'. Some of us are just trying to break bread.
    A plant is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. Simple. And if you want to sell at 2 years ago price, good on you; pls ship some to Australia so I can charge a fair market rate for them. No greed - mouths to feed.
    I tire of hearing long term collectors complain about prices at the moment. It is what it is.
    There's an opinion piece for you bro.

      Funny you are saying 'it is what it is' , when it, in fact, is what greedy people want it to be.
      Yes, you've expressed how you aren't considering this as greedy, but it really is shamefully greedy, you're just trying to not paint yourself as the villain.

    • @itsrewiquintal
      @itsrewiquintal 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rianmilit you can paint me as whatever you like. Ive been called far worse than greedy.
      The days of paying $50 for an albo monstera are gone. As a famous group once sang 'Don't dream it's over'
      I get sick of hearing ppl complain about the price of cuttings these days. Market forces will drive the price how they will. As thousands of fresh enthusiasts enter the market with money to spend, it is natural for prices to rise.
      Its like the old guy talking about how a coke and chips 'use' to cost x amount and a gallon of gas 'y' amount. It's pointless because this is 2021...
      You can fight it, you can adapt, or you can just sit it out and wait for the market to correct itself. Up to you what you do.

    • @rianmilit
      @rianmilit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@itsrewiquintal I mean, your comparison makes zero sense, production costs for food and other goods go up, naturally, so costs go up.
      You're not building the plants you sell, and fertilizer, soil etc. are not high costing resources.
      Obviously sellers can do what they want, and there will always be people willing to pay high prices, but be truthful with yourself and don't try to make yourself into a saviour, providing the masses with deliverance.
      You're just profiting off gullible ppl that don't know better.

      @@rianmilit hahaha, wow assumption king in the house.
      Let me say without further comment, i have been 100% honest with myself and you with all I have said thus far and will continue to do so.
      I researched this venture for a solid 6 months before I started.
      I have only been buying plants for 4 months, so I have paid those big prices.
      I keep a detailed spreadsheet of all I spend - every single cent. At present, i am out of pocket $1032 AUD
      I am about to spend another $1000 AUD on a half moon var adansonii.
      As soon as I purchase that plant i will prepare it to work.
      I factored in a price drop of up to 60% on what I have paid once prices begin to settle.
      Thats why it is vital that I sell while the market is high. To recoup my outlay.
      I purchased an Albo Borg for $700 aud 4 months ago - 2 leaves one node.
      I sold it privately to an experienced collector for $1,000 aud. But I sold it with 5 leaves (6th on the way) and 4 established nodes.
      That person divided it instantly and recouped most of his costs.
      This is the only plant I have sold thus far.
      The beauty of a plant is secondary to me, i am in it to supplement my income. If I can make $50-$100/week in selling cuttings into the future i will be estatic.
      I am no painter - i am definitely no saviour of anything apart from my family. My mentallity and approach to plants is very different to yours but as I said the game has changed. Like it or lump it, thats inoor plants in 2021.

      In truth, he’s doing exactly what the free market was designed to do. Prices have reached a point where the much of the customer base believes it’s unreasonable. Power lies with the consumer every time.
      Many understand how we got here and why sellers continue as they are. It’s not like we expect to pay less than wholesale. But if you get irritated by the idea of flooding the market with plants so prices drop (including your supplier’s), then what really is it you’re trying to justify? You want to be able to pay rent with sale of four or five plants? Say whatever you need to to sooth your conscience. Sure, everyone’s got to put food on the table. But lest we forget, ethics are a tenant of capitalism.
      Prices will come down eventually, regardless of anyone’s call to action. So plan accordingly, bro.
      Ps. It’s not our obligation to keep you in business. Starting a plant business after ONLY 6 months in this market isn’t my idea of a fiscally intelligent plan. But hey, I hope it pans.
