I am absolutely BLOWN AWAY with the growth rate of your plant. Just goes to show you the effect that heat and humidity have on a plant! Great job and incredible video!
How satisfying for the viewer to see a years worth of growth in one video. I had no idea what some pothos were capable of. Absolutely beautiful. Your plank system is so much nicer than a moss pole and appears to have a lot less maintenance. Thanks for sharing your experiments!
If I was the judge Id say you def won this amazing friendly competition! That tent skyrocketed that pothos. You gents truly love plants😄✌🏽! Man I expected some big leaves but exceeded that expectation with fenestrations! Bravo👏🏽 Ive never had luck with after a chop on planks and straight to repot. So def will be watching out for this pothos update. Cant wait for the next season! Id love to see a semi hydro on plank grow for season 2 as I suggested to jeff! Congrats gents! ✌🏽
I wanted to have one or two as a souvenir from your channel but I realized it’s currently for shipment only in the US. That’s ok. I hope you gain lots of traction. Sending love from Germany 🇩🇪
Loved this series and looking forward to you two working together again. Even though you won, I think Jeff's results are more achievable for the average plant owner who doesn't have room for a heat tent, lol. Also, congrats on launching your own product. I think they look great. Maybe do a few tests with putting plasti-dip or a similar coating on the bottom few inches to mitigate the possible rotting issue.
This series was so much fun to watch! Congrats on the win! Lots of people are talking about the plank rotting, treatments to prevent that. For my own pothos on plank experiment, I screwed the pot (cheap black nursery pot) onto the front of the plank. I put the cutting toward the back of the pot, and helped it initially find its way with plant velcro. It attached no problem, other than the same thing you saw with previous flat planks and the roots pushing the plant stem off of the plank. I’m using plant velcro to force it to stay secured, which is not ideal. Once it reaches the top (just a couple inches to go!) I’m going to air layer, then chop and repot. I know that I will get a decrease in leaf size for a bit since it will be above the top of the plank, but once it’s ready to repot and be attached again, I hope it recovers quickly! My plank is 4’ tall so there will be plenty of space for it to continue sizing up. I don’t have a fancy humidity tent, but I do want to see how big I can get the leaves without going quite as all-out. I have some basic woodworking tools and would be able to recreate the dowel holes with pre-cut dowels. I don’t know about cutting the grooves down the board, though. I’m guessing you used a table saw? I only have a skilsaw. If you do end up selling just the jig, I will definitely consider it. I have also been experimenting with moss poles (the clear plastic D-shaped ones from Thiccly), and my plants like them, but the constant watering is a bit much!
You could probably coat the bottom in wax or something like that too increase it's longevity, but to be honest it doesn't really need it because by the time it rots, you have probably already extended it so you can just chop and prop.
Absolutely amazing. It is GORGEOUS. I’m looking forward to seeing how it does after the chop. It’s unfortunate that the aerial roots hadn’t grown into the soil already.
I also had an issue with moss poles - they are mostly coconut fibers, which is good, but the birds have been plucking them out to build their nests. I have few Syngonium cuttings which I placed on the fence between the garden and the yard. We have two modular storage units, made of UV-resistant plastic. I then realized that the Syngonium areial roots can hold-on to the plastic surface, which was unexpected: The surface is too smooth and the roots cannot penetrate it, and yet they can hold on to it. That gave me the idea to attempt using wooden planks.
Pretty impressive! Most of us can’t provide that level of heat & humidity, but they would do great outside in the summer. I love Jeffs channel. Been a subscriber for quite a while. Just curious how you water those planks. I didn’t hear you mention that. I haven’t followed along because I couldn’t see the benefit over moss poles. I stand corrected! 🫡
I like Jeff too. Hes a great info source. I was thinking about what if you coated the bottom of the plank with a rubber/waterproofing to keep it from rotting??
Im looking into it but it would be hard to get something setup there. I think version 2 might be better. This one requires a lot of labor and anyone I convince to make them would need the tooling and custom jigs I had made
Don’t know if you remember, but I’m the one who suggested planks made of wood other than cedar (allergic). I’m definitely ordering some on payday! 😮❤ this is awesome
What an amazing series you guys! So entertaining! I really looked forward to the updates. I love both of your content so much. I can't wait to see what your next project together will be
Very cool results and a great addition to the plank method which hasn't really worked for me. Last summer, I've potted my largest Monstera's top cutting with a plank, it isn't smooth but it definitely doesn't have grooves and the aerial roots do not grip onto it, they're just growing sideways and I have to direct them towards the pot myself. I would not repeat this experience the exact same way I did it, I'd love to try it on an actual tree trunk/stump that has very textured bark, I think it'd work well but it'd also look a lot nicer than a plank. I'm also having great results with my moss poles, so I don't really have any incentive to change, except for my largest Monstera that's too large and heavy for a moss pole... maybe if I put a couple of planks inside the pole, it could hold up. Anyway, I also wanted to pitch in that there's an upcoming pothos challenge on Instagram that starts in january if I remember correctly. If you have an account, it'd be cool to see you there, most of the people in there are from Japan, so I'm expecting to see some uncommon pothos varieties showcased and maybe different techniques/substrates. It's @pothos__challenge.
I think I said this before about the planks but you should consider doing redwood. As a bottom, it’s insect resistant, rot resistant and fire resistant or at the very least rubber coating. I know you said you only need a year but I doubt most people will feel the same. Oh yea Redwood is cheap also maybe it’s more now I don’t buy it much for my woodworking but ya awesome stuff here great video
I'm so eager to see the integrated base for these planks. I love the idea of something weighted, but at the same time, shipping something sufficiently heavy seems expensive and environmentally wasteful. I suppose it could be a reservoir for water that you fill at home, but the idea of leaving stagnant water (even sealed) indefinitely inside my pot is kinda gross. I guess anyone can find a rock outside haha!
These variegated giant Pothos are everywhere in Playa del Carmen Mexico. 50-60ft tall. Almost 2in thick vine. Edit: What if you 3D printed the one that goes into the dirt, so it doesn't rot? Then everything above using wood?
Wow, the pothos looks like monstera with those slits. How about making a competition with monstera adansonii but you would have to grow it around the room horizontally, not vertically. Whose plant will be longer and the leaves bigger?
Might I suggest you offer a different base for your planks - perhaps cedar. Could make it shorter, without the grooves - just something to be a little better in the soil. You could do plastic, or something else... or nothing. Just an idea to add in the future.
Thank you for capturing the journey! Will definitely be buying a plank! Also the Sydney plant guy... will be watching!!! You should do a collab with him toooo.
Brilliant series, well done! I wonder how much more it could've grown if it had been repotted. It was incredibly rootbound. I suspect the new leaves will be much smaller. I really wanna see an update on this project in the near future though.
I just wanted to let you know that the shipping cost held me back from purchasing. Please don't get me wrong-the plank and shipping prices are very reasonable, definitely as cheap as or cheaper than I could have expected. I'm certainly not trying to suggest you change anything about your pricing or shipping model. Instead, I thought it might be helpful to get in the head of a prospective customer. I was really excited by the idea of turning a sad little single-node cutting from a friend's pothos into an absolute monster. The bragging rights would be unmatched! I figured I'd only really need two planks if I kept them in regular rotation, at least initially. At $15, the pair was so tempting! That's just about the threshold for an impulse purchase for me (for context, I make slightly below the median U.S. wage). However, when I saw that shipping brought my total to $27, it suddenly felt like less of a sure thing. The idea of the price doubling added a lot of mental friction for me. I hope this feedback is helpful in some way! :)
I was poking around checkout to better understand how shipping cost related to the # of planks, and it actually seemed like shipping was a flat fee of $9.26 (for my zipcode) with a true cost of $8.74 / plank? (In other words y = 8.74x + 9.26). Does that seem right?
Yes! I’ve been waiting all year. Also I would trust a sketch guy in his basement that I’ve been subscribed to for over a year with my credit card information than a company😂 is that bad?😅
Hi. Just tried to order some planks. It appears they can’t be sent to Australia at the moment. Will that change. I realise shipping will be expensive, we are used to that!
Hi I’ve put this same question to everything plants also, I hope you answer this question, I’ve been fighting mealy bugs on all my plants for over a year. I’m still fighting them using alcohol on a q-tip. Please I hope you can help, I cut op my monstera because I was losing it to mealy bugs 😢 I hope you can help.
You don’t ship to Canada 😭 😭 😭 I was about to buy a ton of them but the site wouldn’t accept my address. I hope you consider shipping to your Canadian viewers in the near future 🥺 🙏
@TechplantChannel Wow that is absolutely incredible, thank you very kindly for answering back. I just made my first end cutting and I'm very excited to start letting it climb. This just made me all the more excited. Just discovered your channel, keep up the amazing work. Thank you.
Your pothos is gorgeous. Grown under different conditions, yielded different results. Looking forward to the next collaboration with everything plants. 🪴 it was , fun to watch the progress and competition 🎉🎉🎉.
I am absolutely BLOWN AWAY with the growth rate of your plant. Just goes to show you the effect that heat and humidity have on a plant! Great job and incredible video!
Wonderful to see how different techniques can yield different results. Lovely ,lovely pothos plant that techplant grew.
Thanks! This was by far the most fun video series ans I'm looking forward to our next one!
Ideal conditions help a lot of things grow. People and plants.
You both did an amazing job!
Did you and @EverythingPlants grow the same type of pothos? @TechPlant, your pothos has is lighter green with some variagation and fenestration.
You need to protect/patent that plank concept. It's fantastic.
Too late....I stole it already 😂
@@EverythingPlants Now it’s going to be a battle of the plank sales! 😂😉

I am more invested in this series than my favorite TV show. Ten seconds in and I'm already audibly gasping!
@Techplant - maybe fit metal rods into the first plank and have them in the soil, keep the first plank above ground?
You could use a weatherproofing spray for wooden fences for the part of the plank that goes into the soil. Or use plastic dip.
Yeap I have to test some stuff out but eventually there will be additional plank stuff
Maybe look at making the base plank out of composite decking material
I think the plastic dip is a good idea. I believe it’s inert but would have to check. Composite decking has no structural integrity.

I ordered 6 planks AND will subscribe to Jeff because I loved witnessing your collaborative experiment this year. Good job, gentlemen!
I can’t believe how big those leaves got! Beautiful plant!!
Wow! Those new leaves are getting close to what you normally see when they’re growing in the wild in the Caribbean. Loved the contest/series.
The light trolling was totally worth it, as usual. Awesome growth on the plant. Great video!

Dang that pothos looks incredible, like a whole different plant! You crushed it! Thats why I'll always 'root' for you in a battle of plants!
LED light doesn’t penetrate as far down, maybe that’s the reason the lower leaves went
This series was so much fun to watch! Congrats on the win!

to improve your product and prevent degradation 6:33, you can simply add another part that is made with plastic that goes into the soil 😊

I also had an issue with moss poles - they are mostly coconut fibers, which is good, but the birds have been plucking them out to build their nests. I feel like you should have put some of the aerial roots in a vessel of water.
The comparison of the first to last leaf is funny. Made me laugh.
Awesome job! Very fun series watching both of you.

You could epoxy coat the part that goes into the soil.
Congratulations. Your plant looks fantastic.
I did watch Jeff’s video first and thought he did a great job with his pothos. Then I watched your video 😳 Your pothos is gorgeous 💚

I would like this plank, but maybe cut in half or maybe a pole with the slots, but the plank as is, is much too big for me.

Is this Hawaiian giant pothos or a regular golden pothos with his fantastic system?
Regular golden
