@@valekstormhowl4999 I hope Studio Orange improves the final arc of Beastars, showing more of the changes in the society + the *Bad* boy's reaction to old daddy
I'm really glad to watch so many different reviews of Beastars, because sometimes you may end up being surprised by a different view you wouldn't have thought of before. Basically I never looked how Legoshi's and Juno's relationship really differs from one another until this video. I always viewed Juno's crush on him as the typical high school anime girl who's in a normal love story but isn't aware that she's in a deconstruction of that trope and one aspect of it is HOW Legoshi treats and thinks about Juno. In a normal love story she would be the girl that will also give him romantic thoughts, but as I found out here in this video is HOW he sees her as nothing more than a friend, and HOW she's never a part of his romantic life in the first place. Even when she gets slightly more aggressive later on, Legoshi already recognizes this and actually makes a concentrated effort to avoid making contact her in a way that she wants. Another part of this video is about how Legoshi also serves as what it means to explore your sexual preferences which is definitely addressed much later on in the series. Especially that one part of the video where her looks at herbivore couple but it wasn't just him looking at a couple, in a definite "blink or you'll miss it" moment, you'll notice that he's also checking out the bunny girl of the couple. This is a very subtle hint about Legoshi's sexual preferences and what makes it pretty funny is that when Gouhin the Panda gave him that porn mag to determine if he had a thing for bunny girls or not, that question was already answered much earlier in the episode, in a slightly more wholesome way, at least more wholesome than looking at outright porn, which I don't think Legoshi even bothered to look at. This is one of the reasons why I like running into more Beastars review, especially for anime only fans who'll probably see things even more different than those that have already read the manga. So I'll look forward to your review of the second season when the English version is out one day. So great review all and all.
I've always found that anthropomorphic animal stories are better at explaining things like sex and sexisms' better than topics like racisms and discrimination, but that might just be me and don't think I could explain my views in text very well.
@@thejudgmentalcritter6584 hi I wanted to let you know but the rwby TH-cam Abel aka has been coping your review like every time you or twins inc does a video he will copy it
@@linkrussell1085 Thank you for your concern, but I don't think that's true. I don't actually watch Adel Aka, but scrolling through his videos I think the similarities is just coincidence. And both FatManFalling and myself do a RWBY Bingo to accompany the volume, just because its similar doesn't mean anyone's copying each other. Again, thank you for worrying, but I don't think anything like that is really happening here. :)
It's easier to digest when it's not someone you immediately recognize. It's harder to point at an animal on a screen and draw parallels to your own racist/sexist/discriminatory relatives or even yourself, meaning you consume the message being presented to you easier than if it was humans. We have pre-conceived expectations for how animals behave, a lot like how people will have pre-conceived expectations for other groups of people that influence how we treat and respond to those groups. It's basically just pointing out the viewer's biases but subtly enough to fly under the radar initially. That being said, I think Beastar was mostly trying to tell a story before it was trying to tackle any major societal issues, considering animal insticts (something very un-human and not able to be drawn back to human society) are such a major story element.
Yeah, that is one thing. It's not really a tone shift as it's called in the video, it's the first glimpse of the themes that will be relevant later on.
I feel like this was a little over simplified, but I guess that’s your review so that’s fine. I just feel like the series is more than the just idea of sex. It covers a lot of different things to think of the moralities of the world they are in, plus it also goes into the social structures of power and discrimination between both herbivores and carnivores. Thanks for your take on the series anyways though it was a funny video and a good thing to take my mind of this mind numbing quarantine!
Legoshi/Haru has a reason for the confusion. Species and predator/pray make the relationship a struggle. The struggle with Yang and Blake is the terrible writing.

I personally don't feel like Beastars should be a direct euphemism for discrimination because of how instinct and animal behavior is a huge influence in how the characters act. Like Beastars does make references to how Japanese society functions (like families getting paid for having kids to boost the birth rate), but instinct is the main theme of the story. A lot of the actions that the characters make (Legoshi attacking Haru and Louis being a dick to carnivores) wouldn't be as acceptable if the characters were human. Beastars can open the conversation about discrimination but it's mostly about coming to terms with your instincts and the limitations that come with it.
I am guessing when u say not being accepted for a real world One of one it would be like a black person attack a white person and a white person being racist to a black person
Yeah this makes way more sense. American politics has people's heads fucked up. People see "racism" in everything these days. While the theme could theoretically be extended to that I do think at it's core it's really just talking about the nature of instinct.
I recently read the manga after watching the show and I have to say, the manga is better. Especially the scene in the black market where the panda shows the pictures. In the anime it's a bulletin board but in the manga it's an entire room with millions of photos posted all over the walls. The anime really downplays the scene. Same with when Legoshi punches Louis. I. The manga, he flies much, much, much farther.
I thing I always thought isn't great about the racism allegory angle is that the herbivores have a reason to be weary of carnivores, that being the carnivores are by nature suppose to eat them. Black people don't try to eat white people and viseversa. I had a friend who agreed with me and instead suggested a sexism allegory. Boys going through puberty can struggle with their urges and go after women, much like the Legosie struggles with eating Haru. That aside, the struggles of living in a society that means you reject your basic instincts is very well done. It's a good show
Those sound like specifically American problems. I don't think it makes sense to look at a Japanese story entirely through an American lens. The ideas are obviously going to be much broader than that.
