I watched the 99 HxH and 2011 I love both, I will say I prefer the faster pace of 2011 for the hunter exam arc, but I prefer the 99 version of the phantom troupe arc. I can’t wait to see your reaction to my favourite anime arc ever 🔥🔥🔥 Chimera Ant is such an emotional roller coaster
What I love is that Madhouse hired voice actors for the 2011 version of the four main characters, Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio, that sounds very similar to the 1999 version's voice actors. With that, fans of the 1999 version would have good continuation when they switch to the 2011 version.
Gon's VA is very different in the 2011 version it's the one I didn't like the most. Leorio's one is great, Killua and Kurapika's voices are similar and both amazing.
i liked that i watched the 1999 version and continued with 2011 i think its only the chimera an arc. But yeah the voices were really good. I was just sad of the lack of Kurapika :(
Gon's 1999 VA is the same as Naruto's which was weird to get used to at first 😂

Kite has to give Gon Ging's Hunter License in a place where he shouldn't even have it in his possession because it would be illegal.
They thought it would disrupt the pacing and the tone they were trying to set I believe.
@@mrcx6142 they just created more problems by doing that because in the 2011 they only showed Gon and Kite's meeting in Whale Island through flash backs and it made it seem like all Kite did was save him from the Foxbear. They even made it so that Kite and Gon didn't recognize each other for a while whereas in the manga they instantly recognized each other because their meeting in Whale Island was very meaningful. Kite met his master's son. Gon found out about Hunters and that his dad is alive.

i also like this art style more. something about the line art and shading just gives more grit. york new arc in particular looks so much better in this art style, particularly when kurapika first recovers the (fake) scarlet eyes

The "Go" in Gon and Goku stands for "Going off somewhere without your child"
The way I imagine it:
Mito (holding a baby Gon): "Why did you name him 'Gon' anyway?"
Ging: "I named him after myself."
Mito:
Ging: "Aaanyway I'll go get some milk, take care."

Mito: "Can you believe Ging? He didn't even tell me where he went! He's just gon--..."

Some takeaways:
Kite hates killing, but he did because he had to. He teaches Gon about the forest and it's rules.
Kite introduces Gon to what a hunter is and as such serves as inspiration for Gon wanting to become a hunter himself.
His role in the life of early Gon cannot be overstated, because he was that important to Gon becoming who he eventually became, and in that short time here Kite was to Gon what a father would have been, even if their relationship wasn't extremely close or fatherly - but he looked after him, helped him bury the mother Foxbear and he taught him about what there is to know in his environment.
I am glad ange and carlie react to 1999 version!! Totally agree with ange. That is way more better than 2011 ver. Included the ost and art style (Many Scenes of the big moment)

With the older works, it feels like people who have a good understanding of the original work have translated the worldview of the work into the images. I think the new version is designed to be easy to read and understand for a wider audience. By the way, the voice actor for the main character Gon in the old work is also the same voice actor as Naruto Uzumaki from Naruto.

The 2011 HxH remake rushed the first several arcs, similar to what FMA: Brotherhood did. It’s a nice refresher for old fans of the series, and a quick intro for new viewers. The 1999 series ended with the Greed Island arc (aka the last episode you guys watched).
I absolutely love the OPs and EDs from the 1999 series. I highly recommend checking them out!
1999 is much better imo, the atmosphere is amazing and gets even better as it goes on. Would love to see you watch it all.
HxH 2011 is my favorite anime of all time but i never watch the 1999 its so outdated and of course the best Arc is missing anyways.

If I had only watched 2011, I would think only the Ant arc would be "the best" but aesthetically, Yorkshin was goated. The vibes were so real.
And the Greed Island one felt really "fun" to watch. The vibes were completely different there as well. I've rewatched the 2011 version twice already, so I'm quite familiar and unbiased.
Yeah, 1999 is just superior in every way. I know some people don't like "old" animation, but.. especially nowadays.. that old animation style is such an aesthetic.
If I were to suggest someone who's watching HxH for the first time or even rewatching.. I'd recommend they watch 1999 first and watch 2011 after Yorkshin arc.

Also in 1999 version there's one whole exam round in hunter exam that they did not remake in the new anime. I love that part, I wish they include that too

This version is so nostalgic, Killua and Kurapika are my first anime crushes. I remember I was the same age as Gon when I first saw this and now I'm almost in my mid 30s
I'm only 20, but I watched the 2011 version as a kid. Killua was also a crush of mine back then, lmao.
Lol I watched the anime the first time when I was 10 and i have massive crush on Killua. I remember being so giddy when I turned 12 cause I finally the same age as killua and gon. Time flies, now I’ll turn 28 this year
Watched the 1999 version as I was 12 or 13, barely understanding anything because my English was totally crap back then and it wasn’t available in my country yet so I had to watch it online. I still totally loved it because the characters were cool and the darker tone spoke to me.
Now I am in my 30s and still love that show (both versions)
To my opinion 1999 remains the best version specially for its dark ambiance, mytical themes and chara designs.
I totally agree and I love watching both the 1999 and the 2011 version. Unfortunately in the 1999 version the timing often is off. 2011 has great timing when it comes to editing especially in fights. But you said it well, the designs and dark ambiance of 1999 rules!

Same thing with Togashi's other series (Yu Yu Hakusho) where this animation style does the dark tones justice. Plus 2011 version cut out some characterization to streamline the series at a faster pace, whereas 1999 took it a bit slower so you could enjoy the characters a bit more.

Can we talk about the absolutely gorgeous soundtracks...and oh my god don't get me started on the york new arc with the phantom troupe, it's literally art!! The jazz mafia 90s new york vibes... absolutely immaculate, you should react to this version as well guys, and there is way too much they deleted there's literally a treasure hunt in the hunter exam and other parts they took out
Kite also gets mentioned within the manga after the first Episode/Chapter. When Gon is talking to Satotz for example he shows him the Hunter License Kite left and asks him about it, only for Satotz to reveal the license belonged to Ging.
Man the theme of the old version is unforgettable it’s bring back so much memories .
You guys should check episode 16 form this version I’m 100% sure you’ll love the difference
The 1999 version was directed by the LEGENDARY Kazuhiro Furuhashi (he's also the director of Spy x Family). He was a big fan of the ideology 'SHOW, DON'T TELL'

The 2011 version of HxH is beyond brilliant, but the single biggest flaw was not including this for pacing reasons. The 1999 version is amazing as well because it's a bit darker and at times almost eerie. I very slightly prefer the 2011 version because it gives us more story and amazing voice acting + musical choices, but I also didn't watch the 1999 version when it was around but only later.
Both the 1999 and the 2011 version have a very good reputation, and it's not controversial to prefer any one over the other, really.
I found the 1999 version irritating because it included tonnes of anime only stuff. Long additional scenes and even additional episodes. And adding interactions with characters (eg staff at Heavens Arena) that are totally contradictory to the spirit of the original. I haven’t watched the 1999 version past the HA arc, so I can’t comment on that. I also didn’t like the subtle shift in characterisation of Hisoka (mainly via the voice actor).
I think the detail about Mito winning custody of Gon is anime only.
Just because details are in this episode that are not in the 2011 version, don’t assume they are taken from the manga. A lot of details in the 1999 version were made up. It’s only the Kite details that are a match up.

@@MilesCW I’ll have to give it a go. But I personally find too much deviation from source material rather irritating. By contrast, what they’re doing in solo levelling now is entirely acceptable for me, because all the events that they are showing are referred to in the manwha but are ‘off screen’ or generalised. In the anime, they are just bringing them more into the narrative for world building rather than remain laser focussed on Jinwoo. But, so far, they have not spent too much time on them so as to detract from Jinwoo’s narrative, nor has there been anything contradictory.
I highly recommend you guys both check out the manga. Both first episodes (2011/1999) are still adapting the source material, and reading the ACTUAL original puts it all into perspective
Nippon Animation did this version. It's really awesome. You can tell that Whale Island is a lot bigger in this version and Aunt Mito is the manager of a bar and not scaling fish. In this version Aunt Mito never seen Gon leave on the ship.
I never comment, but this time I wanted to because HxH is my favorite anime. I've been following both of you since the time of Squid Game, and since then, you always accompany me during lunch or dinner. When you started watching HxH, I was really glad to see that you were enjoying my favorite series. Although I have to admit that the '99 version is the best for me, but almost no one watches it because it's incomplete, and the 2011 animation is much more appealing.
So, seeing how you reacted to the '99 version made me super happy, especially because I feel that something the 2011 version didn't do well was rushing through the entire first arc too quickly, especially this special and important encounter for the series.
Honestly, I would like it if at some point you continued with the '99 version to see the differences, especially the first part or the York Shin arc, which is spectacular. But if it's impossible, at least seeing your reaction to this episode was great since generally, no one watches it.
There are still the openings and endings of the '99 version; they could also be a good option to react to since they are very good.

As someone, who watched both HxH-shows, I would recommend watching the key moments of the older version, because there are very stark contrasts between both versions. 1999 is written and styled far more darker, with a "Thriller"-setting in mind. Hunting and being Hunted, literally. This also is reflected in the soundtrack. On top of that, you get to see a more sinister Hisoka in this version, which is also always a win.
One more thing: They added a filler storyline in the Hunter Exam, which gives everyone more moments to shine.
I didn't remember there were 2 versions, so I thought it was just nostalgia from 1999 when the first arcs of 2011 didn't really strike me as it did back then, now I understand. In my memories it was more focus on the danger and the mysticism of the hunter journey, which was really impressive for the 10 yo me lol
HxH 1999 was the first version I saw growing up. But I’m really content with HxH 2011 that anything that 1999 has to offer feels more like a bonus rather than a weakness of the 2011 version. :)
the thing I love about the 1999 version, is that they gave more depth to the characters in the hunter exam.

What a surprise. Ngl HxH 1999 was so good. Specially the York New Arc. The ambiance, the soundtracks, the animation, the dark atmosphere, the Nen felt so much more personal to each character. It reminds me a lot of the first adaptation of FMA although they strayed from the manga but the 90s animes were ome of the greatest.
The 1999 version does expand on things a lot more, in turn giving a lot of development and answering a lot of questions the later adaptation doesn’t. Like the Hunter exam is wayyy longer and has more phases to it
I remember watching the whole 1999 version with the GI OVAs and THEN finding out about the 2011 version lol.
I love the Yorknew Arc in this one more, sure it’s got lot of fillers but the atmosphere was so good it made it feel fleshed out, also that OP by Wino has been living in mind rent-free ever since

Gotta say, i love this version much more than the 2011 coz the atmosphere, drama, and dark tone of the series is on a whole other level than the new one where everything is too much cheerful & merry (though i guess it was because the 2011 ver was targeted for the younger audiences more). And another important thing is the flute BGM! It still as good as ever 😊

The 2011 spent the extra time on the ship and introducing Kurapika and Leorio. Setting up the team/group dynamic from the get-go. I think that's more valuable for getting the early arc going than setting up Kite. But they should have found somewhere to have a flashback.
Hunter x Hunter 1999 is just perfect.
The 1999 and 2011 have things they do better than each other. When it comes to Ep 1, I think the 1999 is better, but the 2011 does introduce you to more of the cast & show's you Gon's cheery side a bit better than the original.
Also, it was probably a bit better to get kids hooked when the 2011 didn't have a child getting punched by an Adult in the first few moments of the Episode 😆
I've watch the 1999 version to whatever episode it was. Then continue with the 2011. Cause the 1999 version was so good. And they remove some episodes in the 2011 version. And the 1999 version Opening is my absolute favorite. Ohayou

IMO, there are two other *must watch* episodes of the 1999 adaptation. The first is episode 24, which greatly expands the last scene of ep.19(2011). After Gon gets paralyzed and slugged and sent flying by Hisoka (which you now can know was a callback to when Kite slugged him at age 9) , we see a completely alone Gon sitting in the hollowed out tree. It's a classic scene, which the narrator closes with the line, "What must Gon be thinking, alone in the darkness?" ⬅
Excellent scene. Yet ep.24(1999) takes that one shot and expands it into half an episode, turning out one of the best episodes of any show I have ever seen. There is virtually no dialogue, and we observe Gon through his three days of paralysis, self-doubt, and loss of confidence. (Of course, very few people who watch the 2011adaptation even realize he was paralyzed for three days.) ⬅
The other episode is ep.46(1999), which covers the events you observed in ep.37(2011). This is when Gon and Killua return to Whale Island, and Killua meets Mito-san. What makes it so good is that it is told almost completely from Killua's perspective. I remember some of your remaks and speculations while watching the 2011 version; they were quite close to what 1999 reveals explicitly. And who doesn't want to know what foe there is which Killua can never defeat?

Ging didn't necessarily abandon Gon at first. He dropped Gon off to his (gings) grandmother to go do hunter shit and mito took custody of gon at that time thinking Ging to be an unfit parent. He does abandon him after that to continue doing hunter shit, but its not said whether that was his original intention or not.
Yeah, aside from some pacing issues and some voice acting choices, the 1999 version just has so much going for it, a much grittier tone and artstyle that really shines especially in the Yorknew City arc. I still personally prefer the 2011 version for many reasons (one of which being the music but that really is a very subjective matter), but there is an undeniable charm and personality to the og version that is impossible to capture in more modern animation.
And the exclusion of Kite and this whole prologue from the 2011 pilot is still a baffling decision to me that I'll never understand.
So so happy to see someone reacting 1999 version of HxH. And i totally agree with this quote “2011 was not bad but 1999 was way better” 👏

Yu Yu Hakusho is the series to watch (probs after you are done with HxH), and I can guarantee Ange will love it. Carlie I think will too, but for Ange I just know.
I do prefer YYH over HxH, I think it has more of a soul to it. I've only seen the 2011 version of HxH though.

In terms of the anime I can't exactly say I like it better than HxH 2011 but I can't say anything bad about it, really. I think for the time, the anime was amazing and like you say, it has so much of a soul!
Plus it's one of the few anime where we actually have a really good dub as well, because most dubs are - frankly - shite.
I definitely think YYH is an absolute must watch. They wouldn't regret it and I could see Ange having a similar reaction to you where he prefers the animation to HxH2011.

This will probably get lost in the traffic but you guys should definitely check out some of the Kurapika scenes from Yorknew. They are a very different vibe.
Omg I love the 1999 version, the style of it is so amazing. My favorite part is the Kurapika fight in this style. It was so superior.
There was a lot of good in the 1999 series, but they took a LOT longer to tell each story. I think the first stage of the hunter exam - in the tunnel - had like another full episode dedicated to it, and there was at least one other stage. That means more space to tell the story and build characters, but also some episodes that just took forever.

Really love the 2011 version but I slightly prefer the old one you should really consider watching this one too especially the York New City arc feels so eerie and it matches the dark vibe of the show perfectly

If you like the older animation style then neon genesis Evangelion is a must to watch, or even something like yu yu hakusho written by same guy as hunter hunter
So because the 1999 anime already existed the 2011 version really rushes the hunter exam arc and the heaven arena arc so a lot is left out where the 1999 version really takes it's time and explores so much more in depth as it goes. I recommend watching the 99 version at some point (in your own time or on the channel) to see all the extra details, story beats and character explorations left out of 2011 and to see just how dirty the 2011 anime did my boy Leorio.
All that said the 2011 version does just as good a job for yorknew and does an incredible job for the arcs missing from 1999 so both series are incredible.

The 1999 version of when Gon takes Killua to meet Mito-san is also different (better) than the 2011 version.
Ging was top 5 Nen user. There are more Nen users than Hunters.
Expecting Gon to finally meet Ging every arc have the same feeling of expecting Eren and friends will finally reach the basement.
The voice actor for Leorio in the older version died in cancer. I believe it was in 2021, if I am not mistaken. May he rest in piece.

There's so much more substance in this episode in comparison to the 1st ep 2011 version. A much superior introduction to the story of HxH as well to Gon as a character.
Nope, not controversial at all, I and many others also think the 99 version is superior. Thats why I recommend people to watch the 99 version till the end of yorknew city arc then continue to the greed island 2011 version. Like you can see in this ep, 2011 versions took out many details that in my opinion enrich the story. But hey, I just thankful that they continue the series at all.

I prefer the voice acting in the remake, but I prefer the animation in the 1999 version, especially after the Phantom Troupe appeared. The 1999 version also has an original story that is only anime. I hope you get to see it as soon as possible.

Yeah I absolutely stand by that the 2011 version is infinitely better than the 1999 version but the first episode... I think everyone agrees that it makes no sense to cut all this, its not only kite its also gon and why he ACTUALLY went to go become a hunter and his whole relationship with nature and just how his character is beeing defined in the first episode it just doesnt make any sense to cut it all out. Its not the end of the world but still kinda weird so yeah everyone should watch ep 1 of the 1999 version before going into the chimera ant arc.
The attention to every single moment is what makes the 98 version much better imo. The newer anime feels way more fast food.

This version is much better. They probably would have done a better work with chimera arc.
