    I'm currently researching the whole process and working on applying to grad np programs, I've worked with a number of people who've graduated from varioius online and brick and mortar schools. All of whom are working either in hospitals or with practioner groups. Now it's my turn to find out which one will work for me. I'm impressed with the information people are posting regarding their experiences and tips for NP programs. While watching this video, the appearance of dog in the background just made my day!

      Accelerated 1 yr RN program and then online NP program if only interested in nursing and patient centered approach!
      Patient centered approach is the sociology of why a patient has a disease and thus how to treat the patient. This is different from the medical approach of medicine which MD's and PA's follow, which is the disease/pathology approach that looks at the physiology of the disease and the all encompassing nature of how the disease effects the person's systemic system.
      However if you want to receive a detailed medical education that encompasses the disease centered approach that is similar to doctors you should become a PA (Physician Assistant). You currently already have the patient care experience all you need is the prerequisites. The way to become a PA is found below!
      Firstly to become a Physician Assistant (PA), you must obtain a bachelors degree from an undergraduate education. This is non-specific but largely people tend to choose degrees in the sciences as the prerequisites for PA school are heavily science based (Bio 1,2 Chem 1, 2 Organic 1, Biochemistry 1, Genetics, Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology 1, 2).
      Next all PA schools require direct patient care hours to apply. The AVERAGE ACCEPTED APPLICANT has ~2000 hrs. Examples of obtaining direct patient care hours is through Nursing, Athletic Training, Physical therapy, medical scribe, etc.
      Apply through CASPA common application. You will need three letters of recommendation and a personal statement. You will also need to submit all of the official transcripts that you have from University.
      Once accepted to PA school there is a requirement of 3 academic years of education. Program length for PA school can be 24 months of graduate education to 36 months (Masters level graduate level education). PA's are taught under the medical model which is the same model of medicine as Physician's. This is different then the nursing model which only nurses follow, such as NP's. The curriculum for PA school is a similar curriculum to accelerate doctors during World War 2. PA's first year is called the didactic phase. This is heavy book learning of medicine. The second year is called the clinical year. This is where PA's get 2,000 hrs in multiple specialties (Primary care, Orthopedics, OB/GYN, General Surgery, etc). To draw a comparison Doctors have two didactic years and 2 clinical years. Follow similar frame work for learning medicine but PA's have a generalist approach and MD's have a more thorough approach. After completing all of the requirements during PA school, PA students must pass the PANCE exam to become certified. The PANCE exam is a nationally certified exam. PA must retake the exam every 10 years to re-certify to practice as a PA.
      PA's are required to get 100 hours of CME units, which is similar to physicians.
      PA's and NP's have similar lengths in terms of schooling and I can delve more in depth of the differences if you like.
      PA school is very competitive so apply broadly but understanding medicine is what matters and is worth the time and the expense! It's all fun and games time you are responsible for the health and well-being for a acute ill patient in the ICU!

  • @Vanessa-ng5cu

    Hey, so I really enjoyed this video. Gives me an idea on what to expect in a sense. I am a second degree BSN, RN graduated in Aug 2022, passed my NCLEX in Nov 2022, and started working full time in February 2023. My original plan was always to become a NP. I knew that bedside nursing RN wouldn't be enough for me because I would like autonomy and the opportunity to potentially open up my own telehealth practice etc. I'm hoping to start in Oct, but haven't completed my application yet. In your opinion, do you think it's smart to go right into FNP school? I truly dont see the point in waiting since I know RN is not where I want to stay but I am 25 and feel like I have time as well but what is your take on new grads jumping into an NP program?

    • @Nursejanx
      @Nursejanx  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve seen people go straight into a program as a new grad RN, I just think it would be easier with a few years of experience first

  • @amandabrynn6853

    How much nursing experience would you recommend to have before going to NP school? I started an ADN program right out of high school. So next week I am at one year of nursing experience on a med-surg floor and will graduate with my bachelors in about 6 weeks. Should I wait? I intend on doing my program part time and still working. I just turned 22

    • @Nursejanx
      @Nursejanx  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the biggest factor is your network. Where you do clinicals might lead to job offers since you’ve essentially worked there for a few months and have a head start to how they do things, plus they will know if they like and trust you.

    • @Nursejanx
      @Nursejanx  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know that there are programs where you can go into NP school right after finishing your BSN, but I think most people and schools would advise that you get 1-2 years of RN experience prior to entering an NP program. I think you will have a much easier time learning the material having additional clinical experience as an RN.

    I am currently in a BSN program and graduate in June. I was looking to jump straight into a FNP program in July. Do you think this would be a bad idea? • @Nursejanx

    Hi! Do you think it’s possible to go into a MSN program straight out of BSN if you have working experience while you were getting your BSN?

    • @Nursejanx
      @Nursejanx  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possible yes, I just think the more experience you have the better. Some schools will require RN experience though

      You can do MSN first and then to dnp later if you really want to

    Hey! Do you believe a NP is better than an MD?

    Hi :) Could you please answer my questions? I want to enter the NP program with a non Nursing B.S.
    1) What Pre Req classes should I take before entering the NP program?
    2)Does it matter what my BS is in before applying for the NP program?
    Thank you.

      @@cheyennecharlottezoelle You'll have to get your RN license and go to nursing school before you can enter NP school. There might be a few programs that will give you a combo with an RN and the NP in one huge program. You might want to consider PA school if you don't already have an RN, because it is comparable to an NP, and you will probably get there faster.

      It depends on the University. There are a few schools that I know of in my state that don't require you have your bachelor's in Nursing. For example, I will be going into the NP program, but my BA will be in Social Work.

      For a didactic course, what difference does it make whether you learned sitting in your office vs. a classroom. If the information is the same, the setting is irrelevant. The clinical and skills portion is all in person even with an online program.

      Sitting in a classroom and listening to professors read power point presentation (word for word) doesn’t teach me anything. It was actually worse than me reading and gaining my own understanding of the content. And for MDs,PAs,NPs getting the most out of clinical hours is what matters

      @@slynn7816 with the volume of students online. There is no way to ensure that students are adequately trained. These place are diploma mills for a reason. Everyone graduate and get A’s. That makes no sense. Our clinical hours are all the same and are determined by education standards that apply to all schools. Additionally, we all have to sit for the same boards in order to get a license.

      @@Nursejanx I’ve met people who graduate with a master degree and don’t know the difference between to and too. With study guides and test prep program me that teach to the test it is very so possible for unprepared people to marginally pass. As an educator I’ve seen it happen. So many people pass test to go into the field and not be competent.
