Time now to compare the UAD Ocean Way Mic Collection on the UA Sphere LX vs DLX. Are they as different as they are on Putnam?
The TMA Dieselpunk Mic Art Collection is here:

I can hear a slight shrillness in the LX's higher frequencies that I don't hear with the DLX. It exaggerates the sibilance of certain words. But again, very slight.

Wow... I really like the sound of both. The solution I see is to get one of each.

People are dumping LX’s on Reverb. You can get them pretty cheap these days.

Great work. Honestly, the DLX just sounds more premium, more luxurious, and while the sort of finished feel of the LX sounds tight, I actually think it’s deceptive, because as soon as you start to read copy, I prefer the DLX in every case. And I also think the DLX would cut through in a mix better.

I love that you’re an LX critic. “how do they cut through a bed” test coming thanks to you.

@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Ha... just what I'm hearing/feeling. I actually prefer that tight finished sound too, but I noticed every time you read copy I leant more towards the DLX. Also, if it's coming out so 'finished' from the LX, where's the fun in that?! I like finishing it in the Apollo or hardware.

@@matthewwolf1793 I hear ya. For me, one major consideration is workflow. For example, not long ago I was sent just over 100 Allstate tags to cut, that all had to get out the door ASAP. It's a 4 second tag each time that takes about a minute to complete and upload once I get into a rhythm, and I was able to get them all done in about 2 hours. If I had to spend even one more minute on each one doing post or polish, that would have added nearly 2 more hours to my delivery time. This is the reason I cut the way I do, so that what hits Twisted Wave is as good as finished and ready to upload back to the client as soon as I trim ends, breaths, etc and name the file.

Jock Itch>? why yes. How did you know Mark? lol. Great video. Like the comment about being inside your room versus inside your head. That LX is one heck of a mic

We need a full jock itch commercial. It’s pretty wild how different, yet how specifically useful the LX and DLX are. I thought this would be a cut and dry comparison but it’s nothing like that.

Just bought an LX... had buyers remorse wishing for DLX .... nope.. LX is tighter and 'easier' in my "home studio" environment..
( DLX probably better in a more acoustically controlled space.).
I would not use the 180 plugs on the DLX, so more than happy!.. Sphere is pure witchcraft !.. 🤣

Yasssss! The witchcraft is so pure that if you squeeze all the juice out of the Sphere and drink it, you’ll turn into a newt. Enjoy your new LX!

Both 12s - dlx, 47 - lx, 49 - dlx, 269 - lx, 800 dlx, The 47 and 269 really highlight the resonance on the dlx... it's almost like there's a faster than slapback delay centered on the resonant frequency. Some of these would be great for vocals / instruments... I'm actually curious about the 416 between the two. I love the 416 on my voice...

    • @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
      @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff  ปีที่แล้ว

I agree. It’s very obvious on those. Maybe we wrap up Sphere-a-palooza with a 416 head to head.

Mark, when you have a collection of mics that are all good, how do you decide which is best? Do clients really care? Do you choose the one you like, or consult with clients or casting agents?

Do you need the sphere mics in order to use the ocean way plugin or will it work with any mic?

Check the UA website for the latest specs. I’m not up to date with what may have changed.

I'm biased towards the big DLX. Can't hear the LX performing better in any situation. However, If I use the engineer seat I understand why the LX could be the right option to work in post. ***Can't join Discord: Invite Invalid: "This invite may be expired or you may not have permission to join"***

It's a tough call. Ultimately, it's all about what works in the mix or with a music bed so sometimes when we hear it solo and not in that context, the best sounding track may not be the track that works best. I totally get what you're saying. Testing them both against a bed soon. Try the Discord Link again. I just refreshed it. I didn't realize it had a 7 day expiration so I have a new "never expires" link on there.
