- Several roads in the City of Johannesburg are now sinking due to illegal mining by the zama zamas who are digging under roads to mine for gold. Authorities are worried that the practice of illegal mining is also linked to other organised crime which include human smuggling and trafficking, money laundering, illegal weapons and explosives, violent crime, environmental degradation, transnational organized crime and tax evasion.
