Lone Wolf and Cub/Kozure Ookami: Demon Road to Hell | Scrolling Down the Belt 9

- Welcome to Scrolling Down the Belt, a series that delves into beat 'em ups, brawlers, and belt-scrolling action games, in mostly chronological order!
Lone Wolf and Cub is known far more widely in its manga and film/TV drama forms, but the fact that it had a 1987 arcade game is kind of amazing, even if no one really talks about it! It was an earlier passenger on the belt scrolling action train, and contributes a few very interesting things to the genre.
Good luck to Ogami and Daigorou on their journey!

Last year i wanted to make a game like this in Samurai Jam. They nailed all the mechanics i wanted to add to the game back in 1987!!. Truly amazing. Thx for the great video man!!
I'm really glad you liked it!
Lone Wolf and Cub must've been one of the influences on the Mandalorian
I absolutely agree, it's a very similar plot!
Holy shit my favorite manga of all times had a video game adaptation!! I never heard about it
It's actually kind of surprising how under the radar this one is! I've loved arcade beat 'em ups and this series FOREVER, and I only relatively recently found out about this!
Haven't heard of Babykart in a while (Yeah, it's under that name that I heard of it for the first time)
I didn't even knew the kid was his own son and not just an adopted kid/a kid tagging along like Dororo or Blade of the Stranger.
I'm hyped for the Ninja Warriors episode :-)
I hadn't thought of it in awhile honestly, which made it s fun episode to do! Believe me, I'm hyped for The Ninja Warriors too! It's absolutely a favorite!
Going to be honest, I am only vaguely aware of this property, but really more so the films, like only a tiny bit at most.
The baby cart is pretty rad, hahaha.
This game does look rather rough, especially with those bosses.
Beat 'em ups, the true hard mode of platformers from the 8bit era.
I feel like a lot of early beat 'em ups are people's "Nintendo hard" or whatever...but ultimately yeah, as you say, many of the games that gave birth to that saying are probably platformers!
I almost feel like something a BIT more story focused would have been better for this property, but I get it, this is what was popular at the time! I'm not UNHAPPY with it, but it is a bit rough!
Great review, I've heard of the source material but didn't know there was a brawler. Love that sword blocking feature! Those gunmen should have had a period-accurate reloading time between shots though, give the overwhelmed player a break lol
Tbh I didn't know there was either until fairly recently! Blocking is absent from quite a few of these games in any form, so it's shockingly ahead of its time! And god, I WISH they took like 20 minutes to reload their rifles! 😂
Haven't thought of Baby Cart in a long while...
Not being that familiar with the series, besides the fact the Bentenrai (Sorry if mispelling) were used as the base of the main enchmen from Big Trouble in Little China, I didn't even knew that it was his son instead of an adopted kid (From what I remember of the trope, the kid is ussually unreleated to the "wolf" bloodwise; Dororo and Sword of the Stranger are the exemples of this dynamic coming to my mind).
Nice job!

Thanks! And yeah I kinda planned that "jump scare" on purpose! 😆
