This was so good. I watched this video specifically to learn how to apply delay to a stereo pair of Matrix outputs on a Yamaha TF5 console at my kid's high school, and I ended up learning a concept about Matrix outputs that I am excited to go implement! THANK YOU!

Excellent explanation. Very logically laid out. Thank you very much.😀

i like to feed my LR mains from a matrix to offer me more eq and dynamics control. my signal path is something like this: channels into groups or LR, LR into matrix for main pa and zones. When I want to apply eq to the room (main pa or a zone) I use the eq on the matrix. when i want to adjust the eq of the mix, I use the eq LR bus. IF I am generating a mixing board feed to a recorder, I do it from the LR bus (with all the room equalization happening after the recording send) . I take a similar approach to compression and limiting. with the compressors on the matrix set, more like limiters, appropriately for each different speaker zone, and the LR compressor used more artistically on the mix. Which leads to another point about insert plugin effects (This is not something that applied to the QL, as it had ample effects slots, and even two insert points on each mix). some popular digital mixers have only 8 effect slots available for graphic eq , reverb/delay effects, and vintage dynamics/eq/ other processing) If I avoid a graphic eq on my main mix, I have a slot available to insert a vintage compressor on my mix. With a 6 band parametric eq on my LR bus and on my matrix bus, I have sufficient equalization available to me, without using a graphic eq on my mix.

Hi! Great video. Please how can I separate the tops and sub if I’m using a DSP. I use t.racks DSP 408

Question can you just pan subs left and pan tops right on different channels

Beginner here. I don’t understand the difference between this setup and the LR mono sub setup that it seems your board is already configured to.
Why wouldn’t you just have LR mono sub? Does it not function in the exact same way?

Excellent description to help someone understand the concept. Have you worked with a Soundcraft UI24R yet? I didn't see that one listed in the link.

Thanks! I've used it a bunch but I'm unlikely to make any videos or content about it. Was there anything you were wondering about? I can answer it or point you in the right direction.

A great explanation there my lovely...
    Personally though...
I prefer to use an Aux send post fade, with only the channels (at 0 dB) , that I want to send to the subs... going to that Sub Aux.
I'm only saying this because more and more frequently now, when walking up to a desk somebody has got a Left/Right and a Sub matrix thing going on... and they seem to always have the Sub Source as a copy of the Masters... Which really, really annoys me... I mean who on Earth wants all the waffle from everything i.e.; the top kit, Horn Sections, Choirs, effects and the main Vocal mic bleeding into the Sub Speakers.
I haven't scientifically analysed it, and it could just be from an expected psychoacoustic thing...
but I do think the Aux method just sounds more "how I want it to sound", as in more musically pleasing.
That said... I like your presentation style...
Oh, and, drink your Tea before it gets cold 💋🚀

They are only subs IF they are a unique mix the engineer chooses, otherwise they are simply low end. To put it another way, subs are an effect using low end, not the low end on the full mix. the difference being how they are used, not the frequency band of the speakers. Think about a home theater, 5.1 system. the question of IF it has subs depends on what you are listening to. When listening to a movie, you have subs, the engineer who mixed the movie sound mixed for 5.1, choosing what sounds are going to the subs (mixing from an aux send). If, however, you are listening to a regular CD, you don't have subs, but rather a mono low end woofer, with the signal for that woofer being a function of the frequency range applied to the stereo sound from the CD (mixing from a matrix of the LR mix). . . Words are important:: that is specific terms to describe tools with specific functions, within an industry. Please don't hesitate to explain the proper definition of Subwoofers to the engineers and technicians you work with.

heyya i wanna ask a question here, im currently using a cl 5 as a base mixer in my church but i regurally use a m32. The link system in each of the system i noticed is different. In a CL 5 if you have a stereo input for a playback system you will have to pan or the link system automatically turns the link channel into a stereo input for L and R output from the playback system? Because in a midas console for instance the m32 link feature automatically makes it a L and R input, does this behave the same on the CL or other yamaha digital mixing consoles?

Can this same set up work on Yamaha TF3?

    • @OffshoreAudio

Yeah it should work basically the same. Tf series also has a dedicated sub bus that you can use.

Thanks a bunch. I'm afraid I've never even seen an M7CL, I think they're just not so popular where I am. If I come across one I'll make a video.

Thanks. I'm not sure what you mean? I show it with a SUB and Mains setup in the video. Or did you mean something else?
