So, I have a question. Unless I missed something, you somewhat contradicted yourself. If you are setting gain PFL on the meter, how do you expect to get your faders close to zero, it seems like they would just end up wherever they needed to be for the mix? Great explanation on the gain, however.

Hey, thanks for making this video! Personally I prefer to use REW (Free) with the UMIK-1 measurement mic. I should mention I like to use the Moving Microphone Method (MMM), which prevents you from having a single sweet spot in the room while the rest sounds off. There are guides online on which settings to use with REW for this method. This guide assumes the crossover has been configured correctly. If not, there are guides online. It also assumes you know how to configure your measurement microphone and output in REW. Start by setting the volume correctly. First, turn all the amplifiers down. Next, turn your subwoofer amplifier off. Now open the Generator in REW. Select the “Pink Periodic” noise type. Set it at -12dBFS. I use Full Range because the crossover takes care of the rest. Now press the green arrow (Play) button. Open the SPL meter in REW, and use: SPL, C, S. Start measuring the SPL by pressing the red record button. Increase the level of the speaker amplifier until it reaches the desired volume (e.g. 75dB RMS or 85dB RMS). Now turn the speaker amplifier off, and the subwoofer amplifier on. Reset the SPL meter. Increase the level of your subwoofer amplifier until it reaches the desired volume level (75dB or 85dB RMS). Now turn your speaker amplifier(s) on, and you’ll be ready to take some actual measurements! With the Moving Microphone Method you use the RTA in REW with specific settings. Those settings can be found online. After you have taken your measurements you can import a house EQ curve, like the Harman (Kardon) In-Room target. This is just a text file you can find online. Then you can use the AutoEQ feature to select the target level, how many PEQ/High Shelf/Low Shelf bands you have available, the frequency range to apply EQ to, etc. This could be an entire guide on its own, so I recommend looking for online guides. Last step is to apply the EQ settings, re-measure, listen to your favourite song, and make sure everything measures and sounds right. God bless you all!

heyya i wanna ask a question here, im currently using a cl 5 as a base mixer in my church but i regurally use a m32. The link system in each of the system i noticed is different. In a CL 5 if you have a stereo input for a playback system you will have to pan or the link system automatically turns the link channel into a stereo input for L and R output from the playback system? Because in a midas console for instance the m32 link feature automatically makes it a L and R input, does this behave the same on the CL or other yamaha digital mixing consoles?

Why do my Sennheiser EW-D packs have a gain adjustment within themselves? Should I be boosting the gain in them at all, or leave them at zero and increase the gain on my X32 only? In other words, is there a case where I should be boosting the gain on my individual mics? Thank you for your content and for any light you can shed on this.

I work at a theatre that hosts pretty much every type of production, be it touring theatres, corporate events, comedy shows or small bands. Most of the time, I'm the lighting tech, but I've also worked as venue foh. I think that your overview was spot-on on the sound side of things. With the other aspects, it can also be a lot more people depending on the size of the production. In my line of work, there's usually a touring technical director and separate manager. While the manager (sometimes there's a separate tour manager) takes care of all the general aspects, like when the venue is accessible, where vehicles can park, the time schedule, making sure hospitality requests are taken care of and so on, the touring technical director is in charge of coordinating all the technical aspects and making sure the needs are met. There's also a venue technical director who's just the venue counterpart so everything's coordinated. The lighting department also usually has some extra hands/techs to get all the lights flown in the beginning because that is a time-intensive process that needs to be done quickly so the stage is clear. Then there's also the rigging department that's there for anything that needs to be flown. In the theatre I work at, all of us can operate the fly system and no points need to be pulled, so there is no dedicated rigging team. However, the stage setup is quite extensive with the theatre productions so there's personell for that.

Probably an obvious comment but I think a lot of it does depend on the room and the reflections too, u can’t rlly use set rules as much as the guidelines can give a good starting point, like in a venue I work in we don’t even mic the overheads because it’s just a tunnel so it will just ring and reverberate like crazy

"If someone questions your gain settings" just slap them. Lol . If I were working front of house at any respectable event, the proper use of electronic devices and meters would be employed over my "Ear O' Meters". With those being applied secondary. Yes, Hi-Fidelity is found in the numbers. Just don't forget its art meets science. And why music is so very Cool.

I am one of these guys that I use the unity gain as a starting point on faders and turning on the gain knob till reaching the -18 to -12 dBfs, in order to have the best resolution that I can. If the speaker system is overpowered then I am turning down the system, as if you have an overpowered system and you leave it like this then you overpower all the noises from the electronic circuits and all the interferences and also in case of any unpredictable feedback the situation is going very bad. In case of a need of more power to any output like the monitors outputs, there is a solution that the mixing station has (if you have a digital mixer that is supported from the mixing station) that is called Re-Gain . Is an amazing solution that you can adjust the gain from your channel without messing up with all the other sends that are related to this channel, as it lowers all the sends accordingly with the gain increasments.

At this point I mix in a variety of venues with capacities from 150 - 1200 people. Always as a freelancer but never as a touring engineer. I find it very funny how each venue will treat you differently. And it is completly decoupled from how much money is involved. I had to buy my own drinks (non alcoholic) in a big venue while it was the most normal move to just grab something elsewhere. Also I've seen venues with very strict hierarchies in their staff structure. Usually a sign for professionalism but not in a 300 cap. venue lol😂. Those people create problems for themselves I swear. To expand your list of people involved... There is always someone in charge of the processes in the house. The names vary... I commonly hear the word "night leader" Thats someone who connects all the dots nessecary for a smooth concert. This person will care for the artists needs, the bar personals needs, this security personals needs as well as the internal and external tech crew. Processmanagement basically. They reschedule plans if needed and coordinate everything. Most importantly ... they delegate stupid little tasks. I appreciate this person a lot as an engineer since i can just send people there if they ask me questions or demand things that I am not in charge of. Thats the benefit of a bigger venue.
