I hate the part number for the smaller piece you also replaced?

My 2001 Outback wagon appears to have much the same setup, but has not yet been inspected closely. Fuel leak/smell on full tank only - is the filler neck/pipe the likely suspect in such circumstances? Asking around, some have suggested it necessary to drop the tank, but seeing this, and another video replacing the filler neck on a different Subaru model of similar vintage, it seems not. Any advice on further diagnosis before proceeding would be appreciated.

Before dropping the tank, I would definitely just take that plastic shield off in the wheel well and inspect the filler neck and other lines back there. On my vehicle, the fuel filler neck was completely rusted through up near the gas cap, which is why I was getting that gas smell when the tank was full. The only way I discovered the issue was when I was filling up my tank and gas just started spilling out of the hole. If it is really rusted back there, be gentle with the filler neck so that you don't loosen any chunks of rusted metal that may drop down your filler neck and into your tank.

What was the part number for the second set of smaller tubes (@5:13) you replaced (with the plastic spacer)?

Those smaller tubes came with the fuel filler neck assembly, so I am not sure if you can order it separately or not.

One thing you should have done was just replace all the clamps. Those OEM clamps are horrible and don't work very well once they starts corroding. To all that are viewing this, just pay the extra $5 and save some headache by using worm gear clamps.
