Special Ops Emergency Ammo Resupply | Tactical Rifleman

  • I was out at the rifle range, working with some Air Force Medical people, and they had brought about a dozen crates of good military 5.56mm ammo. Each crate has two ammo cans. Each ammo can, when opened, provides you with a number of cloth bandoliers. Each bandolier has 4 cardboard sleeves, a speed loader, and a black safety pin. Each cardboard sleeve contains 30rds of ammo on three 10rd stripper clips (for use with the speed loader). That makes for a lot of trash when you’re doing 4 hours of Failure and Box Drills out on the hot range.
    What prompted me to do this video was when some of the Air Force guys were saying that they had no idea what the bandoliers or the safety pin was for. It was all just trash to them. I started having flashbacks to my time in different military schools and times when seasoned soldiers took the time to explain it to Private Erickson. So, let’s share a little military history, or at least, this is how it was explained to me. You’ll know why I grab the bandoliers and safety pins at the range now, when no one else will; and you’ll never look at those ammo bandoliers the same again.
    Thanks for watching, TR.

    It’s funny that the Army actually had to make bandoliers for the FLC because no one on the non special side of the Army knows what they’re for. I was always told they were useless, or that they were for 20 rd mags and didn’t realize any different until I watched a Marine talk about them.

      Daniel Frakes I never said anyone used them. I said I was taught what they were for in basic. That being said yes the DS even said that almost no one ever uses them. At the range we would throw them in a pile so the range officer could pick them up, the same with the zip strips.

    • @fathead8933
      @fathead8933 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      thomas abel I would have atleast tried it had I known what they were for. In Iraq we had “push” boxes that were loaded with mags that we’d kick off the back of Hmmvws if we needed more ammo. This would have been a better solution for that case just because a guy could grab five or six of these and replenish his fireteam. For the most part we were all running anywhere from 10-13 mags and had assault packs with more if the mission went tits up. I personally carried 14 mags. 12 in my gear and 2 in a thigh rig. 2004 don’t judge me lol.

    Karl, I know this is old, but I loved you talking about the safety pin. Long time ago, I was on a range that caugh fire. They sent us out with shovels and the flappers, and long story short one of the guys went into anaphylactic shock (severe reaction to something that was on fire) and some Voodoo medic pinned his tongue to his lip so he wouldn’t swallow it. I’ve had a large safety pin with me ever since. People think I’m insane when I tell them why…

  • @reddevilparatrooper
    @reddevilparatrooper 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Figured out quick as an infantryman. My Drill Sergeants never taught us about bandoliers. I learned it when on the range on how to load with the spoon and stripper clip. I learned on my own about the safety pin or "Diaper Pins" on the bandoliers. It's to shorten the bandolier which is your built in emergency ammo pouch for your mags to fit you in combat for your comfort after you have reloaded you magazines that you managed to save. Back in the 1980s we tied a sand bag behind our canteens with two 550 cords as an empty magazine pouch courtesy of the former Ranger Battalion NCOs before the Panama Invasion. The old 11 Bravo SQT manual said we should stuff our empty mags into our pant cargo pockets or pant cargo pockets or inside our BDU shirts if we weren't wearing back then the PASGT Body Armor. If we were, we were to stuff them on the two side pockets. Make sense with the combat bandoliers for that emergency.

    I keep a bunch of emergency resupply ammo cans set up similarly to what is being discussed here. Take an empty .30 cal or .50 cal can, put a StripLULA loader, trash bag, 3 pistol magazines, 3-4 rifle magazines, 2-4 boxes of 9mm ammo, some extra lube/cleaning supplies, and fill the rest with bandoliers of 5.56 ammo on clips, loose/boxed, or in mags if that’s your thing. Can also add some non-perishable foodstuffs or medical supplies. Seal it up with tape, date it, and leave it. When you need it, you have a can of whoopass on tap. The ammo can form factor means you can stack them easily for transport. The trash bag is so you can put a can or two in it, maybe even throw in a spare weapon, tie it off, and drop it in a hole or water somewhere as a ready-made cache.

    Some people seem to have a lot of trouble using the provided loader, can't figure it out for some reason. My old Gunny showed us that if you still have the ammo box, a table, any kind of an edged surface, push the last round in on the edge insead. Saves your thumb too.
    I learned to use another mag to push the rounds in.
    The safety pin is so you can adjust the strap to a length you can use without it flopping around on you.
    But as I have a speed loader myself now, I still keep one on my keychain next to my John Wayne can opener.
    Never know when.

    I'm really glad this is your video today! I was just watching Brent0331's video on his most recent experience at One Shepard, and a year ago he shared a video on the importance of knowing how to utilize this bandoleer set up. I was re reminded of the importance of expedience in emergency ammo resuply this last week and weekend taking Fighting Pistol and fighting Rifle with Tactical Response through a correspondence course through Spartan Concepts here in OR. I chose to pre stage stripper clips and James was kind enough to loan me his MagLula (Among other things he loaned me) which made topping off those mags way faster and easier, and I'm willing to bet that means the world if you have to do it some where that lead and steel are flying through the air. We were issued ammo in bandoliers back in Vietnam in the 60’s. Those bandoliers did not have that additional cloth tho. We were also issued 20 rd mags made by colt, and I still have a half dozen that I use today. I mention that because those 20 rd mags back than were intended to be disposable - one time use. However we reloaded our mags. Back than basic combat load was 240 rds for riflemen. However we were all auto rifleman and carried 700 to 800 rds on a deep cover. Some units like ours (75th) got resupplied with loaded 20rd mags in wood ammo crates. Stripper clips and speed loaders were pain in the butt in jungle environment. Fresh ammo on stripper clips not so bad, but stored ammo or exposed to humidity they were heck to strip off. Better off hand loading.

    The newer bandoleers with the extra space are an improvement from the older bandoleers. The old ones had six pockets with two boxes of 10-round stripper clips, holding 120 rounds of 5.56x45 NATO. Todays bandoleers have four pockets of three 10-round stripper clips. Holding 120 rounds, plus the extra material to hold four loaded magazines. That looks like a good idea.

    When we (3ACR) depoyed in '03, we didn't get our full loadout of gear before we went out the door. We got our Interceptor vests literally the week before we got on the plane, and no MOLLE pouches for them. my LBV was too small to fit over it. So I resorted to carrying my mags in a bandoleer over my shoulder, just like you mentioned. It was ghetto, but it worked.

      @@TacticalRifleman OIF happened at a weird time. The Army was already starting to refit with new gear, but the priority was going to light infantry units. Being assigned to a heavy cavalry regiment, and being a medical section within said regiment, we were lower on the priority list for sexy gear. There just wasn't enough of it to go around at the time. This was also before the RFI was a thing. The Army got a lot better about equipping guys going downrange. No more hillbilly armor, no more guys having to ask mom and dad to send them stuff.

    Off-color question, but is there any particular reason why you chose a muzzle brake for your SBR instead of a flash hider? I've always been under the impression that, especially for 5.56, brakes are more for range / gamer guns, and a flash hider is much more preferred for any self-defence or duty / military application ( especially if you're going to be shooting inside). Is this wrong?

    Many grunts in Vietnam after 1969 quit using mag pouches and solely used bandoliers. They’d either wear them normal, tie the around their waist or pin them perpendicular to their chest, which makes a nice 7 mag chest rig. Tax dollars going to get extra mags for our military? No problem!
    Tax dollars going to give to someone who has top of the line cell phone and name brand clothes “welfare”? Hell no

    • @danvondrasek
      @danvondrasek 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      because cell phones totally dont get paid off in monthly payments of 20 bucks, and you totally have to spend the 1k upfront to get them these days, right? And because Marshall Fields, and other discount stores that sell name brand clothing at half the price totally dont exist right? Because people who need an extra 200 bucks a month to afford food have to walk around wearing thrift store, used, unbranded clothes, talking on flip phones, or else they dont qualify for SNAP benefits in your eyes?
      Having actually been on welfare myself at one point in my life, I really do pity people like yourself. What if YOU need those services one day, and someone judges YOU by the standards you judge them now? I really hope for your sake, you wont ever know the feeling of swiping a SNAP card to get food, and having to listen to the remarks people like yourself make behind you in line, as they judge every item of food you buy, every piece of clothing you're wearing, etc. And I hope you dont have the balls to call yourself a Christian with that attitude towards those who do receive welfare

    The Australian Army learnt the importance of speed loading from the Vietnam war. Before then we used to get ammo loose and when it was resupplied it would be in box form. In the battle of Long Tan where a company of Australian soldiers was fighting off hordes of NVA numbering in the thousands with only small arms and artillery to keep them at bay they needed a resupply via helicopter. The helicopters dropped off the ammo in box form and the soldiers had to crawl over to manually reload their magazines bullet by bullet using their thumbs. The enemy human wave charging and the diggers really learnt of the importance of loading quickly.
    We have stuff similar to what was described but I think it is a little bit better in that it is one piece rather like a magazine in its own right and you just attach to the top of the magazine and push the rounds down into the magazine.
