    I love how Mr. Knightley likes emma but he's so stern on calling out her bad attitude, and emma step by step became a better person. Also her father was such a wingman.

    It's so great that Emma truly learns how to be a better person and a better friend in this adaptation. In all the other adaptations, the Harriet-Emma relationship falls so flat and it's so sad. (I know that their relationship goes cold in the book but still... I love their relationship in this adaptation the most)

    • @chiaratippy
      @chiaratippy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +333

      In the book they married?

    • @mizjohs
      @mizjohs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +125

      @@nicols8375 One of Jane Austen's main points in the book is that couples are only likely to be contented and suited to each other if they marry within their own social class. Harriet would be completely overwhelmed by the obligations of being the "first lady" of this fictional town, whereas she will be socially competent and therefore self-respecting with the good, hardworking farmer Robert Martin.

    • @soulserenade.kcn1992
      @soulserenade.kcn1992 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    • @t.matthies3049
      @t.matthies3049 4 ปีที่แล้ว +290

      @@soulserenade.kcn1992 The relationship does end as well as can be expected, all things considered. They aren't as close as they were, but they were still friendly. Although the relationship would have had to reduce its intimacy, for the sake of social class at that time, in the book it says the relationship naturally went that way anyways after Harriet got engaged and became busy with her future husband and in-laws. It's worth noting that despite Harriet being kind hearted, even the most forgiving person would have trouble maintaining an intimate friendship with someone who had needlessly interfered so much with her love life. It ended well, but it very nearly cost her a good marriage with a man she loved. Emma's intentions were good, but few friendships could have survived such a thing with the intimacy intact, even without factoring social classes/regulations into it.

      Yeah, he's probably not the most handsome but he manages to charm you with small little things, like those smiles he makes, his facial expressions, the way he portrayed the character, which personally I really enjoyed. • @chiaratippy
      @chiaratippy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      To me it's kind of a tie between this one and the 2009 adaptation, because I really like them both but for different reasons. The 2009 one is the best adaptation when it comes to story-telling and closeness to the events of the book and accuracy of the characters. This one has some flaws in terms of adapting the story in the final stages (I think they could've handled the whole Jane Fairfax/Frank Churchill affair better, particularly at the end, and a couple of other things that happen towards the end of the book that were hardly included) but I appreciate the aesthetic, the OST, and after watching I completely erased all the doubts I had regarding the casting, of Mr. Knightley in particular. Also, despite the not perfect adaptation in the second half of the film, on the whole I still enjoyed the way they chose to tell the story a lot, and didn't really make me regret much the parts that were omitted or changed, I actually found some parts were adapted really well. And as you said and someone else pointed out in the comments, another thing that stayed with me is how the characters and their lives feel "real" despite the quirkiness of setting and tone. Both the endings make me a bit teary-eyed, but that's me being over-emotional. LOL

    • @achanwahn
      @achanwahn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      They made it more of a modern take, feels like a bunch of memes. Personally, I like the one from the 90s, though I can't stand Gwyneth Paltrow. I felt it more true to the tone of the novel while bringing a little more modern speech and mannerisms w/o being heavy handed.

    • @chiaratippy
      @chiaratippy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      It is indeed more of a modern telling but saying it looks like a bunch of memes is a bit harsh in my opinion. It's certainly quirky and it's not perfect, no doubt about that, but I don't know why when I saw it it felt like a breath of fresh air and even after watching it like 5 times, it still remained thoroughly enjoyable to me. I enjoyed all the adaptations I've seen, included the one with Gwyneth Paltrow but for some reason this new version, imperfect and quirky and all, left me with something that that version or the one with Kate Beckinsale didn't, at least of the movies. The 2009 miniseries I kinda consider of another category because they had all the time in the world to do things as they should have, and it remains superior in my opinion.

I think one of the things that appealed to a lot of people is, as you've said, the way it's funny and light, which is a road that period dramas not often choose. So I watched this adaptation a couple days ago, and this was my introduction to Jane Austen's Emma. I can't believe how much I loved this. As much as I love Elizabeth Bennet or Anne Elliot, I think Emma is the most complex character and one I can relate to the most in some ways. Also I can't believe I'm saying this but I love Knightley more than Mr. Darcy?! Knightley is compassionate and mature, and he seems to know his mind well. He's not classically handsome but there is a unique charm and unconventional handsomeness about him that is just so freaking attractive 😍😍 and I can't get over his smile 😭

    I saw this movie in the cinema when I was traveling alone in New Zealand last year. I’m sort of secretly a movie nerd, but had never gone to the movies by myself. I was a little bored and lonely and so I decided to do it, though I wanted to see The Lighthouse instead, only to find out that it wasn’t playing anymore. Instead I landed in the tiniest movie theater surrounded by 3 people and was ready but not overly enthusiastic to watch Emma. Oh boy. I loved it so much. You know the feeling when you’re quietly freaking OUT on the inside because the movie is just so good, totally taking you by surprise?? I had that. Big time.
    It was just so witty and charming, all the characters so beautifully crafted and portayed... It will forever be one of my fondest experiences, and I wouldn’t ever wish that there had been someone sitting next to me.
