the entire point of the book is both of them getting to know they're basically the same person -- as lizzy herself tells her father at the end "we are so similar", so it's fine, we can be both!!
Growing up I thought I'd be the witty and smart and confident Lizzy... But I turned out to be awkward and anxious and socially inept Darcy (without the money) 😔
There's a book called "The gentleman and the rake" by Katherine Woodbury where she reimagine the story from Darcy's perspective. Usually, everytime I finish my rereading of "Pride and Prejudice" I reread the Darcy's part of "The gentleman and the rake". To me is a complete experience.
@@allisou I'm going to read it too, thanks for the suggestion :) do you know any other book from his perspective ? Some people commented on the gentleman and the rake saying they had read some others.
People have called Mr. Collins the most awkward man in history, but Darcy gives him a run for his money. But at least Darcy knows how awkward he is. lol
everyone saying 'i thought i was lizzie but i am actually darcy', the entire point of the book is both of them getting to know they're basically the same person -- as lizzy herself tells her father at the end "we are so similar", so it's fine, we can be both!!
@Danielle Barber They are both prideful and prejudiced (hence the title) - which is what I understood to be what Lizzie meant by saying that they are similar. They both have very similar flaws, expressed in very different ways. Lizzie makes fun of people to deflect from her own insecurities and shortcomings, and she assumes that people look down on her for being who she is and doing what she wants. She can sometimes be pretty bad at this, like when she looks down on her friend for marrying her cusin, even though her friend is in a worse economic and social situation then she is, and don't have the same choices to 'follow her heart'. That's how she clashes with Darcy - she understands him to be prideful and judgy because he's silent and socially awkward. When she makes fun of him he's bad at taking it, and she sees that as pride, and not bad self esteem. To be fair he is prideful and prejudiced - he thinks it's okay to look down on her family for not being perfect, even though their social and economic situation makes it impossible for them to live up to what he wants (also forgetting that his own family is not perfect, but only seems this way because of wealth). Even as he's falling in love with her, he belittles her about things outside of her control, and believes other people when they tell him that he's better than her. The reality is that he's just not good with people, and his status makes it easy for him to live in his own little bubble, but he knows that he's not as great as he want's people to think - he would just rather be seen as cold than as weak. While Lizzie brings people down by making fun of them, Darcy does it by ignoring them. In the end they are both so stubborn that they would risk everthing they have to do what they want with their lives - Lizzie choosing not to marry anyone, even someone who could safe her family, and Darcy choosing to ask her for marrige, even if he knows it will alienate him from his family and higher society. They teach each other about their shortcomings, and by not being scared to critize them in the other, they can start seeing it in themselves. For Lizzie this happens in the last third of the book (after the letter), but for Darcy I think it had been going on since he first met her. Just falling in love with her changes everything about how he views the world, which is clear from the few times we see his perspective, and because of his stubborness he couldn't ignore those feelings. At least that's my take. If you actually read this I hope you enjoy! I love this story to death lol.
@Danielle Barber That's completely fair! The 2005 version is my favorite (visual) version, and it's a great story regardless. You have good taste! I adore the book, but I know that it isn't for everyone. You kinda need to get Austins sense of humor to find it funny, and you need to be okay with very little happening some of the time. I will still recommend the book though - seeing the story from Elizabeths perspective is something done best in book-form, and I have never hated Darcy as much in the beginning, or loved him as much in the end, as I have when reading the book. And I have read it like... 6 times or something - it's always a ride, even when I know what's going to happen haha
They could be similar in some ways but that doesn't change that Elizabeth talks with ease while mr. Darcy is an introvert, he's socially awkward. "I don't converse easily with people I don't know well" is an introvert trait.
I really enjoy how this thread developed. In my point of view, they have a very similar mind but one is an extrovert and the other is an introvert. Aside from that, they seem to share the same humor, the same inclination to analyze things similarly--the same way Mr.Darcy Judges the Bennets (except from Lizzie and Jane), is how Lizzie Judges the Bingleys (except from Charles). Lizzie says Jane can't think ill of anyone, and Darcy says the same about Charles. Lizzie misjudged Darcy's wit because he is quiet, and he misjudged hers because of the same reason (he is quiet and didn't understand extroverts).
@Danielle Barber Exactly. Just because someone doesn't like talking doesn't make them an introvert or extrovert. In my opinion they were both introverts but Lizzie just was better at socializing.
Ok but the part where Darcy says he has trouble talking to people he doesn't know and Elizabeth responds by telling him to practice has honestly helped me so much in my social life.
