  • Burial ceremony of Romanov remains. Boris Yealtsin speech:
Dear fellow citizens: It's a historic day for Russia.
Eighty years have passed since the slaying of the last Russian emperor and his family. We have long been silent about this monstrous crime We must say the truth: The Yekaterinburg massacre has become one of the most shameful episodes in our history. By burying the remains of innocent victims, we want to atone for the sins of our ancestors.
Those who committed this crime are as guilty as are those who approved of it for decades. We are all guilty. It is impossible to lie to ourselves by justifying senseless cruelty on political grounds. The shooting of the Romanov family is a result of an uncompromising split in Russia society into "us" and "them." The results of this split can be seen even now.
The burial of the remains of Yekaterinburg is, first of all, an act of human justice. It's a symbol of unity of the nation, an atonement of common guilt. We all bear responsibility for the historical memory of the nation. And that's why I could not fail to come here. I must be here as both an individual and the president. I bow my head before the victims of the merciless slaying. While building a new Russia, we must rely on its historical experience.
Many glorious pages of Russian history were connected with the Romanovs. But with this name is connected one of the most bitter lessons: Any attempts to change life by violence is condemned to failure. We must end the century, which has been an age of blood and violence in Russia, with repentance and peace, regardless of political views, ethnic or religious belonging. This is our historic chance. On the eve of the third millennium, we must do it for the sake of our generation and those to come. Let's remember those innocent victims who have fallen to hatred and violence. May they rest in peace.

To me, it's truly amazing that the last Tsar of Russia and his family are finally properly laid to rest in a religious ceremony in a traditional church. I never thought I would ever see anything like that. How the world had changed so much since then! Looking at the coffins being laid to rest made me feel very sad. The world can be such a cruel place.

This was SO beautiful. It’s so much more than just a long overdue funeral. This is the Russian people proudly reclaiming 300 years of their history. Whatever you may think of the kind of monarch Tsar Nicholas was, his lineage included Katherine the Great and Peter the Great. Their reforms turned Russia from a backwater into a superpower. The Romanovs made Russia a strong, modern country. And for the most part, their people loved them.
What’s sad is that Tsar Nicholas never wanted to rule in the first place. He was a wonderful husband and father and a simple man who just wanted to enjoy the pleasures of home. The monarchy might’ve survived if he’d been allowed to refuse coronation and live the life he wanted to live, but he wasn’t given that choice. If anything, it proves that one someone tells you he doesn’t want to be king, you should believe him.

Today's the 100th anniversary, and I want to express my solemnity to this event. The Romanovs did not deserve to be killed (or to an extent even deposed; I support the Romanovs and personally I am a monarchist for some countries), especially by a communist group who would later go on to establish one of the most influential states in history, although not in a good sense at all. Executions, human rights violations, state atheism, and in the end when Russia got out, they weren't looking so good in politics, specifically with Putin and his current authoritarianism. This is one reason why I prefer a parliamentary constitutional monarchy government over the current Russian politics.
All this that happened after the execution, could've been avoided in some way or another. It would've felt even better if the imperial family was exiled to some other country rather than executed. Death to the Bolsheviks.
May the Tsar and his family rest in peace. RIP

The King of England could have offered them a home, but he was a coward. He was afraid that there might be a revolution in Britain if he accepted the offer made to him by the Romanov's captors. He thought that communist sympathisers here would take their presence as a spur to sedition. It is one of the most shameful acts of familial betrayal in British history. He condemned his cousin and family to death, as surely as if he had been a revolutionary.

I am in no way a feminist, but I am puzzled. Russia had at least one very successful female ruler. This Romanov generation had several healthy older daughters and only one son forever on the brink of death. It seems a pity they did not promote one of the daughters as heir instead of the son. There was precedent. Perhaps the situation was already too dire to salvage the Romanov dynasty by any method.

@TsarevichAlexeiSite: I have visited this church / crypt in St. Petersburg in 2002. It so remarkable as all Tzars and Tzarinas are buried there since de 15th century. At the time I was there, this cerimony, I think, had already been taken, except for the last remains of the two Romanov's children. At last, the Romanov's had been given and received a christian place to rest, like their ancestors. Touchable and sad, at the same time. From Brazil, JAL

I know a few Russians who would love a Czar again and have a Government similar to what is in Great Britain. There are still Romanovs and the right person should be installed as Czar to carry on the family tradition that's the only way the Romanov family could be in a small way compensated. They should also receive the money they lost and get all property returned.

buzzwaffle good question. it is a common tendency for people to remember the past as better than it was. I used to get a kick out my relatives who would talk about the good old days, and when i did some arithmetic, they were talking about the Great Depression

There are still a lot of questions that needed an answer. Maria and alexie, anastacia. The murder of the romanov family. Their remains are truely the bodies. Duchess olga's statement that the girl who was claiming to be duchess anastacia was not her niece. The dna of the one in the asylum should be tested.

When the Russian Orthodox Church will allowed the Russian Government to buried the remains of Alexei and Maria in the burial plot with the rest of the family, and the four servants who stay with family until the end. Don't know if they will share a coffin, or have their remains be placed in two separate boxes.

I first heard of - and eventually got into studying about - the Romanovs because of my best friend. A few years later, another dear friend who is from Moscow helped me learn even more. I was blessed to meet her when we were in tenth grade and she studied here for a year, and we talked about the Romanovs. I believe it was her grandfather who knew the family or had some kind of tie to them - I forget what. She explained that people who supported the royal family had to remain quiet about it and be extremely careful. Even having the smallest trinket or item that had anything to do with the family was quite a risk.

That speech by President Yealtsin was nice, humane, he appeared as a decent, good, human being who genuinely regretted mistakes of the past.
Just one thing I disagree with is that he said "We", as in the people of Russia, made mistakes of tragedy, violence and other bad, regretful stuff but no..it wasn't the Russian people...it was the malevolent Bolshevik, commie, gangstas, led by cruel Lenin then unparalleled evil Stalin, who hijacked the revolution n caused one of the worst tragedies in human history, Marxist Communism, which enslaved millions for 70 years. It was THEY who murdered the royal family.

The slaughter of the Romanov Family was a criminal act and everyone who has a sense of human dignity must be deeply disgusted. But there WAS a reason for hating them. People, who say that they were killed for no reason should study the history of the Russian people during the time of the Romanov reign.
