    Great. I've been using Spitfish De-esser in Audacity. But this one seems more customizable and easier to understand.

    you are such a God send for me! Bless your heart for digging this out and sharing it! it has worked really well so far. Surprisingly it did seem to have some effect on the other parts of the vocal. So i decided to treat each problem part separately and that really worked!
    Thanks a ton.

    • @joeessayvoice
      @joeessayvoice  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamuna Priya I’m glad you found it helpful! You’re right, if you have the settings wrong, you can take out too much and cause damage to the other parts of your audio. Try narrowing the frequency to just where your “esses” are by looking at the Analyzer while one of your esses is highlighted.

    Man, this is my final hope. I've been producing vocals for 4 years now and i'm constantly learning. Recently was faced with crazy sharp s's something i've never had a problem with in the past. Got spitfish de-esser and it didn't make any difference at all. Played around with various different EQ techniques... still no luck. Gonna try this and hope it works out for me otherwise i'm not sure what i'm going to do.

    Hello Joe, just as a side note. I bought a Rode NGT5 which I really like. However, this microphone has a tendency to increase the "Esser" problem. However, since last week, I've been going crazy trying to find the right setting for the DeEsser plug-in that thanks God you found. What I found is that this problem is found on the frequencies between 2kHz to 8kHz. So if you care to try, go to your settings and go to: "TEST FREQUENCIES BETWEEN" and plug 2000 and 8000 in the next line. I also found that it is very effective to change the "NUMBER OF FREQUENCY BANDS to 5. I figured to share this new information as thank's to you and to hopefully pass the help to more people. Best regards.

I have achieved pretty clean and crisp audio overall, but have had trouble with sibilance in my recordings for voice over at times. I was able to apply this plug-in with your directions and I found you were spot on. This helps even the playing field, and just adding a touch seems to do the trick. You are the best! Much appreciated.

    Salute to your efforts.
    Recently I was having too much loud mouth clicks in my news recording done from home because of this new corona.
    I tried everything to get rid of them but failed and only way left for me was finding them one by one and either using default repair tool each time or delete it manually. on 15 minutes recorded track it was very hard labor and time consuming. I was even thinking to give up my news caster career at least for time being till I could find a solution.
    But thanks to your this video I am able to get rid of over 90% just on default setting. I will fine tune the setting to get rid of 100%
    Thanks again and I have subscribed your channel so I can get more and more tips. I use audacity as I do not believe paying unreasonable amounts.

    Paul's settings for narration (for his plugin):
    forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=79278&start=50#p260758
    Threshold 6 dB always
    To get more clicks out, increase the number of frequency bands
    I might use the maximum number of bands on very short selections for spot treatment of the more resistant clicks.
    --
    I'm still reading through, but there is also some useful advice in that thread, such as:
    forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=79278&start=200#p396977
    Analyze > Plot Spectrum. Pick as high a Size as the system will allow. 16000 is good.
    Low pitch tones on the left, high pitch tones on the right.
    Normal voices don't do that. That's the drilling teeth sound. The hump goes from roughly 4000Hz to 10000Hz, so those are the numbers I put in the DeEsser. Accuracy isn't that important.
    This works particularly well after you audiobook master because then the volume of the performance is fixed and you don't have to go chasing after it with the DeEsser Threshold setting. Last I used it, I picked -30.

    This is exactly what the Doctor ordered, but I can't make it work. I found de-esser, I placed it in Audacity's plug in folder, I open Audacity and go to the effects menu. I click on add/remove program and the de-esser plug in is not there. I go back to the program files and it's there. Any idea what I may be doing wrong? BTW, you have a natural ability for explaining how your tutorials work.

      @@joeessayvoice Found it Joe, I'm using Windows and I have Program Files and Program Files X86. The 86 is the newest version. The X86 Program files, Audacity will not accept any plug-ins. However, it worked fine using the older version. The de-esser is working great with more tweaking to make it better.

    Should I attack each sibilance individually?, or can I add it to my macros? I have ACX Check standards as a macro so I'm wondering if i insert the De Esser, it'll attack sibilance in my entire track as opposed to attacking each sibilance singly.

      Play with the settings, adjust the threshold, raise and lower the frequency range you’re targeting for reduction. Like I said, it’s a very customizable thing and will be different per voice. Email me a sample of what you’ve got. I’d gladly provide feedback!

    Thanks for the great tutorial. QUESTION: Do we want to keep the frequency range small? How do I go about knowing which range I should go for? I seem to have noticed that it removed a tad too much AND am trying to reduce the trial-and-error by identifying the proper frequency range, but do not know how to go about doing so.

    • @joeessayvoice
      @joeessayvoice  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Angelo! I think it's best to highlight the particular offending 'ess' and use "plot spectrum" under "Analyze" to find the offending frequencies. If you do that, you'll see a particular bump on the range your 'ess' makes. This is the general frequency that you're trying to reduce the harshness of. Use these numbers to plug into the DeEsser and make the appropriate level of reduction. It will take a few runs to get it right, but don't give in!
