Besides the riffage, take note of how he plays the E mixolydian scale up the whole fretboard using the next note in the scale as the position root. When learning scales this is key to really learning your whole fretboard and also gets modes in your head. Best lesson in here.
Something about blues that always spoke to me as a kid. The rawness, unpretentiousness, dirty, authentic....it really moved me inside. Even as a white son of an Irish immigrant in the US. What a wonderful gift the US Delta gave the world.
Also the assumption that all those old time players sat on their porch counting out e mixolydian shapes and root notes to make sure they sounded proper authentic - as opposed to just whacking the guitar and seeing what worked. :)
@@cgavin1 Yes, they just did what sounded good to them, but what sounded good to them was determinded by the musical culture they grew up in. And they grew up within African American musical culture, which has roots in their contemporary American music, but also goes back to the msuical traditions of West-Africa. Mixolydian scales in blues come partially from that.

Russian forces have launched a major assault on Ukraine, firing missiles on cities and military targets. The invasion by land, air and sea began after a pre-dawn TV address where Russian President Vladimir Putin demanded that Ukraine's military lay down its arms. Initial reports of casualties included Ukrainian civilians and soldiers, and Russian troops. Ukraine's leader said his country "won't give up its freedom". "Russia has embarked on a path of evil, but Ukraine is defending itself," President Volodymyr Zelensky tweeted. Ukraine has declared martial law and severed all diplomatic relations with Russia. The other, which I feel really opened up the fretboard for me, well made it less confusing I guess, is the enharmonic relationship. If you are doing Blues in the Key of E, isn’t it great to know that E mixo is A Major or F#m…right away when you switch to the iv chord, now you can relate where you were and where you are…then when you go to B, well, you can outline B Major triads and also recognize that B Dorian is the same notes as E Mixolydian….to me, these are the key relationships in a blues format….in other words linking the A iv and B v to the E key center and its major modes through the enharmonics. It can get out of hand in a hurry for my handicapped brain 🤣

To those mentioning the "The Rover": Led Zepplin, repeatedly, hasn't give enough credit to the sources of their material. To cite them as the source of anything now is to risk cheating someone else (for example Jake Holmes in "Dazed and Confused"). Calling it "Delta Blues" is probably the best compromise that could be made to get around this problem. I'm impressed that Guitar World (and/or Aledort) approaches it this way, respectful of the culture that was the often uncreditted source of this music.

Yeah I tried to read "Guitar World" for years (since the late 70's), and it might as well been written in Chinese. Thank God for the Internet.
Andy, you’re the best.
That first lick reminds me of The Rover
yup
"Cause it is... nearly exact.
Indeed and the last one Helter Skelter..
I'm so glad you finally said The Rover, I could not place it for anything. Throw some phaser on that thing, and you got a sound
Heard it immediately
Brilliant, thanks Andy you're a Legend dude
Your playing is really, really great!
Read his stuff in the 80s and 90s and he's not what my mind's eye pictured.

Cool Andy I can definitely dig it!
I think a big part of why old bluesmen used open chord tunings is so many of their contemporaries would've been slide players.
True! I play in a few open tunings and there are several great reasons for using them however The Rover is standard tuning.
That opening riff sounds like Led Zeppelin's "The Rover."

When I think about that sound, I recall John Hammond who made it sound like at least two guitars.
Awesome lesson and awesome sound
A little respect for the Camera Man....nice...Andy is,a long island Blues Master. Can I have the Silver Jubliee plz ":)
That first example is basically the lick from "The Rover".
These are great videos and Andy has always been great but it would be helpful to have tabs for the people who these lessons are targeted for.
good stuff. Licks start about 3:45
