A film now from the collection of a now departed friend. Having seen my videos taken since 1985 he was inspired to go out and buy his own video camera and get filming. I have been digitising them and converting the Video8 tapes to MP4. This upload shows Drivers Eye view of the Croydon Tramlink on a ride from Sandilands into Central Croydon past East Croydon Station along George Street, Church Street, Tamworth Road, West Croydon Bus Station, Wellesley road and back to East Croydon Station. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

Interesting to see how much has changed in Croydon since then. Back then, you still saw the old bus liveries; I see two LondonLinks (an offshoot of London Country) and several blue and yellow Metrobus buses. Lots of Leyland Olympian buses -- all gone now. Allders, Littlewoods and Debenhams, all closed. I was in Croydon a couple of weeks ago and by far the bit of Croydon that's thriving the most is the Old Town and market area. No boarded up shop units there; lots of small shops, often ethnic shops, alongside the old names like the school uniform shop Hewitt's. Market isn't as busy as it used to be but it's not dead either and you have hot food stalls which you didn't back then.

Good to hear the first voice announcements on the Passenger Information System before Nicholas Owen took over.

The traction motors sound like the 95/96 tube stock & old Networkers!

Thank you.... i was in Croydon recently and was going to do another one. But they have some sort of screen behind the drivers now and it's not possible to film....

Never realised Croydon town centre was so big. Not sure why I thought it was a small town . Fascinating to join a ride through it .

It's actually a part of London but could easily be a town/city in its own right.....

I have been on the Croydon Tramlink many years ago and it’s nice to see how Croydon and South London has its own tram network. Perhaps North London, East London and West London should have trams despite East London has the Docklands Light Railway.

It would be much better than having all these battery buses running about......

neat...I hadn't watched much if any of these south end tram runs there because of their predominanlty-bushy environment, so I understand why street-running might seem attractive 🍸 it's like a maze too, you lost me!

Excellent vid.So nice to see Croydon before the rot set in.All the old shops that have gone, including the old Reeves furniture store, razed to the ground in 2010 by scumbags as a tribute to a dead, gun toting, drug dealing gangster.Lovely to see the streets pretty free of litter, and without every wall and shop shutter covrered in graffiti.

There must be a conspiracy to stop more lines being built because this is excessively successful.
Where is the line going the other way for much of it? Does it use other streets nearby? This was more fascinating than I expected.
    Another fab clip by JH!

The section through central Croydon is a loop; at 4:12 you see the line turn the corner from the right to join the line that goes out towards Sandilands and at 6:37, you see the line to Wimbledon depart from the loop and the line from Wimbledon joins it a few seconds later. This tram is on "the line going the other way" up Tamworth Road and Station Road then down Wellesley Road, from that point until it joins the eastern line again at 12:55.

@@IndigoJo A shame Sydney's two modern tram lines no longer employ loops. The former network closed in 1961 did and was one of the best systems in the world that could shift the biggest crowds quickly.
