I have another different opion. I believe the headband belong to one of Miyagi's students that fought in the tournament. This student of miyagi might have killed one of Kim's best students and cause such animosity towards the two men. Maybe miyagi had started a karate school in japan after he fleed from America after that robbery incident. His school enter the tournament and tragedy struck. This may have cause master kim to be so bitter and full of hatred that made his tangsoodo the way of the fist. On the other side of the spectrum this incident cause a lot of remose and sadness to miyagi that he decided to never to teach karate ever again. Yes he did allow to let daniel to enter the all valley tournament so he can fix his problems. But that's it no more. Miyagi shun competition and I believe he keep that headband to remind him of his oath. Master Kim became more bitter for the lost of that student that he vow never to repeat that incident again.

There's a ten year difference. Assuming Mr. Myiagi was born in 1918 like on the passport and not 1924, there'd be about a seven or eight year difference if my math is right.
Remember, Master Kim was "still a young boy" when the Japanese started conscripting Koreans to the Imperial Japanese Army during the occupation, and that didn't happen until 1944. The age of conscription was lowered, first from 20 to 17, but the age of majority in Korea was 19, so he would still have been considered "a child" in the eyes of the law, and by the standard of the Koreans at the time. That's also true if he was 18, so he was necessarily either born in 1926 or 1927, making him either 17 or 18 in 1944, and 53 or 54 in 1980. That'd make him 93 or 94 years old in 2019.
If his participation in the Sekai Taikai took place _after_ he assumed the name of Nariyoshi and pretended he was born in 1924, their age difference would only be three or four, for all anybody else knew.

On verra bien ;)
