  • It's not Beach Boys, but it's also not my broken voice! What bold new steps am I taking?
I'll be honest, the key might not match perfectly. I'm strumming along with a guitar and I think the demo was a full tone above the MFQ version, so I've strawberry fields'd them, but something just sounds off.
This is something I've been wanting to do for a while. I actually attempted it 2 years ago, but gave up. This combines Phil Spector's production and Modern Folk Quartet backing vocals with Harry Nilsson's off the cuff lead from the 1967 Monkees demo tape.
This seems the closest we'll ever get to hearing Nilsson's actual lead, unless that one ebay guy ever fesses up and shares the acetate he bough.

Love it! I wonder if Harry's 1993 vocal would work with the track of Brian Wilson's or Tatsuro Yamashita's cover

That's a good idea! That cover always sounded weird to me, but it'd be interesting to see the vocal over a fuller backing track.

Great job! Brian was apparently at the sessions for this song (without the nilsson vocal)

Indeed he was. He talked about doing a version with American Spring in 1973, but that apparently never panned out. Brian said he couldn't get Phil to send the lyrics (Brian... don't you know Harry Nilsson?)

@@threescoreandfive65 yeh I remember reading he was messing around with that song, playing with the bassline and such. I wonder if he even knew Harry Nilsson was the one to write it at that point. He knew in the 90s

That is a good point. It's probable he only ever thought of it as a Phil Spector song. Still, imagine what could have been. A proper early 70s Brian/Sandler production...

In our dreams. If only! Brian Wilson could have had a hit with this record in 1973.
