Simple! If the number is not on my contact list, I just don't answer the call. If it is important, they will leave a message and if I feel like it's important, I will call back. If they don't leave a message, then it's not important.
I do that too. But that doesn't stop the calls even if you are on a do not call list. For what it's worth, the public needs to get behind our legislators and have them put regulations on the Internet and telephone systems to stop this. While considering what we have to look forward to in the in coming administration, this would be one REAL issue that needs to be done for the public good, with a government investigation and a lawsuit for the violators. Well, we can dream, can't we?
Make sure your greeting on the voice mail is not your voice. Just use the computer voice. It prevents the hackers from using AI to duplicate your voice.
If everyone did this, these types of scams would virtually disappear. I setup my phone to send calls from numbers not in my contacts directly to voicemail. It never even rings on my phone so I'm not tempted to answer. An added benefit is it will eliminate most marketing calls.
Two words - or a simple block or ignore - why answer a number you do NOT recognise?? And I stay well away from stupid Facebook - probably the highest scam !!
I regularly get phone calls at our business where the caller is constantly trying to get me to say the word YES. I just answer with an acknowledgment…we do thus and such…this IS the blah blah company, until they start asking repeat questions and I tell them I know what you are trying to do, don’t call back.
Great info but after years of being careful, the company contracted by my employer to manage my retirement, my credit bureau, and another financial institution were hacked. My social and other private data were stolen. They offer free monitoring for 2 years. That info is now out there forever. All the password changing in the world wont help. This stuff has to stop and be prosecuted.
One thing you can do is switch to a phone plan like Google Fi which offers some level of protection against SIM hijacking attacks. If such a plan is not practical for you you might have to at least change your phone number.
Don't forget to add a credit freeze at all 3 major credit bureaus. If you own properly, check with your US county registrar of deeds to see if they will lock your title on your property.
Be careful because as of the AI they can text you pretending to be the people you know showing their number and talking with their voice! Someone lost money because their brother had left a message stating he needs money asap. Only it wasn't their brother who called.
But you answering is all they need to confirm the validity of that phone number. When I never answered those calls for years, spam had reduced significantly tbh. However, when I started new job hunting and started getting recruiter calls from unknown numbers and I’d answer, the spam calls have increased bcoz a few I answered were nothing but verifying there’s a human behind that phone! They’d call, say nothing at all and hang up and the spam increased. Cell phones are a necessary evil although phone companies and federal regulations could do better to protect consumers.
Also, be careful of answering "yes" on a phone call. Wait for them to talk first, since they called you, they should greet first. With current AI tech, they can replicate your voice and do things with it as well. It might also be good to ignore unknown caller ID's, unless its repeated.
Yup! If i I pick up at all, i stay quiet till they say hello. I never give my name first either. Some call to ask “who’s this?”. I reply “who are you looking for”?
I rarely answer calls not in my contacts list, but sometimes, people will respond to my inquiry from a number that is not on my contact list. This caused me to answer the phone the other day. The caller asked if I could hear him. I said yes, and he hung up. I'm concerned my voice can be construed to-God only knows what.

I do not call unknown numbers. I recently got the grandparent scam call. Way too funny, had quite the laugh, got them so mad they hung up. I get many kinds of email and phone calls offering free services, or discounts, and etc. I never cooperate with these Scammers. I never open unsolicited emails where I cannot identify the sender. With the scam emails, if I have the time I look at the coding in the message using a viewer software I have. I find and verify the source IP number. Many of these are coming from off shore.

This is great advice for most people, however I do run a business line from my mobile phone, so I expect to get calls from numbers I don't know as those could be potential clients calling up to ask about my services. I can't block and report all unknown numbers as I could be killing my business by blocking and reporting legit future clients. That's an added dilemma those who run a small business all face. For business owners, you have to be doubly vigilant as you have to take those calls and learn how to qualify them and recognize the red flags they're a scammer and get rid of them ASAP once you've determined that. But still take the calls in case they qualify as a bona-fide lead so you can continue with your on-boarding process like normal.
