Hashtags are used just about everywhere - they make regular appearances in our social media posts, travel across platforms, and they can even carry the message of an entire marketing campaign for really savvy brands... But how do hashtags work on different social media platforms - and how does this affect the way that we use them for business? These are some really interesting questions that I’ll try to answer inside this video.
Let’s start with hashtags on Twitter:
Twitter is essentially the birthplace of hashtags, and it all started with this Tweet: “How do you feel about using the pound sign for groups? As in (hashtag)BarCamp?” This was the first time that a hashtag was used on Twitter, and the message sums up how Twitter hashtags are still being used today - to GROUP together individual tweets that talk about a common topic. Basically, hashtags on Twitter let us find conversations about stuff that we’re interested in, so we can join in and voice our opinions or share an experience.
Brands can easily use Twitter hashtags to engage in conversations about a certain topic or create a new hashtag to promote an event - like #SMMW19 (social media marketing world). If you use a pre-existing hashtag, make sure you take 5 minutes to see what it’s about, so you don’t find yourself in hot water like DiGiorno Pizza did when they turned the #WhyIStayed hashtag (featuring stories from domestic abuse survivors) into a joke about staying for pizza.
Now, what about hashtags on Instagram?
Instagram is all about images, and each hashtag contains a visual feed of all the posts that share the same tag, whether it’s displayed in the image caption or down below in the “Comments” section. People tend to go crazy with Instagram hashtags, which is what prompted Insta to put a limit of 30 hashtags on any post. What this liberal use of hashtags on Instagram tells us, is that they play a key role on that platform.
Actually, Instagram is almost POWERED by hashtags, making their role in business kind of multipurpose here. But, no matter what you’re doing - whether you’re holding a contest or giveaway, or working on a digital campaign, you want to maximize the social media reach for your posts, and make sure that as many people as possible see it. The best way to do that is by using trending hashtags. Since these are the hashtags that people are actively using, it guarantees that the IG post you spent so much time creating, won’t go unnoticed.
Now, how about hashtags on Facebook?
Facebook hashtags work in a different way than they do on Instagram and Twitter. This is because Facebook itself is much more focused on people - including those with private profiles.
Most people don’t really use hashtags on Facebook unless it’s to express some kind of emotion, like “I’ve been trying to open this jar for the past 20 minutes. No luck. (Hashtag)Frustrated”. And they don’t really SEARCH for hashtags there either. Facebook is where you go to look for people or friends - and sometimes groups or brands that you like. But that doesn’t mean that hashtags don’t have a place on Facebook. On the contrary, this means that hashtags on Facebook have a much more specific use, especially in business.

So with Facebook is it accurate to say that whether we use 2 hastags or 20 hashtags on a post more often than not the hashtags dont help being discovered nearly as much as Instagram, Twitter and others ? In that case do you recommend using them on Facebook or no ?
Hello 👋 Yep, exactly! (In general, less is more when it comes to hashtags on FB). Most users search for people to connect with on Facebook, or look for groups to join or brands they like... but very rarely will they search for hashtags - that's more for Twitter & Insta. For the most part, many social media managers forego using any hashtags on FB, and when they are used, it's usually kept to a minimum of 1-3 per post (any more can look like spam - both to the people viewing the post *and* to the algorithm). I'd recommend using hashtags on FB when: (1) you're creating a series of related posts (2) to emphasize part of the content (3) to invite people to create and share their own content as part of a UGC (user-generated content) campaign. I'd def stick to tagging people that you either know or have engaged with before though (otherwise, can appear spam-y). Contests can often help with growing your audience (although you want to be careful to shy away from producing 'engagement bait', which can hurt your reach - I made a video about this that you might find helpful: th-cam.com/video/hOhwEZRrcbQ/w-d-xo.html ). Curating and sharing content from influential profiles in your niche can also help you draw your *target* audience - you might consider taking this a step further by collaborating with influential profiles on content (like videos). But before working with any 'influencers', it is crucial to examine their audience first - to see if these are also the people you want to reach. Otherwise, it's better to focus on providing value in your content... and the definition of 'value' can vary greatly. Some people follow a page because it inspires them; some follow a page because they like to learn from it; while others will follow a page because it shares funny jokes and cat memes. It really depends, and it can vary by industry and between individuals. Ultimately, I'd recommend spending some time analyzing your audience in general (across all platforms and websites, not just FB). See how people talk about you: what they like about your brand vs. what they dislike. This will help you learn more about your audience and how to communicate with them. Tip: I think using hashtags that are less popular is better than using the most popular hashtags starting out. Why because when using the most popular hashtags your post stays visible for maybe 5 seconds. As everyone is using the most popular hashtag.

My second question is ...
When we put hashtags supposedly on FB and they stay there for couple of days and i get particular amount of likes and comments but at some point it stops increasing the likes and comments and then i go to edit my post and change my hashtags remove the previous ones and put new ones more relevant and save my edit .would it make any difference in the growth of likes and comments or whatever ? includes insta and other social platforms.
Personally, I think it's better to focus on creating new posts, especially since algorithms are getting smarter all the time. Many platforms (esp IG) have caught on to the practice of switching out hashtags, and it's something they want to prevent, so it won't really bring you another engagement boost. The jury's still out on FB, but since they're working on improving the "news" aspect of their feed, I suspect this also makes _timing_ pretty important (especially because there has been so much fake news - being able to date each post becomes more relevant, which also suggests that editing after posting won't be helpful). IMHO, I'd recommend keeping the focus on creating new posts instead of going back to switch out hashtags, esp as algorithms become more sophisticated. In the long run, you'll benefit more by going back and analyzing what worked well so you can try to recreate it in fresh, new posts. Thanks again Bilal, I really hope this helps!! 🤞🙂

It's an educational web where tutors make their profiles and students make their profile and we have a software through which they interact and have a class. We have social media campaign what I have observed is when I use less hashtags like 6 or 7 the post reach value doesn't go that high but when I put hashtags like 15 16 it get boosted but at the same time I don't want to make it show like Its a spam
@@bilaltirmazi Hashtags may not be the only factor affecting your reach. It could also be related to your publishing time, a trending topic, or the text and graphics used,. You mentioned that you noticed more reach on posts that have 15 - 16 hashtags. Tbh, it's rare to see so many hashtags used in one post (at least on Facebook, it's fairly common on Instagram), but if the boost you noticed is hashtag-related, then it's more likely that it's related to a specific hashtag rather than to the number of hashtags. It's worth testing by posting content with fewer hashtags for a while and observing the reach of each post, so you can see which ones are more effective. P.S. Is it good for our posts to put many hashtags or we should put specific few hashtags?
Hi Bilal! This is a really good question, and it depends on your topic / platform / niche (there isn't really a one-size-fits-all formula). Generally speaking, I would avoid using a lot of hashtags on sites like FB and LinkedIn (too many hashtags can look spam-y here, and may even cause the algorithm to classify your post as spam; I'd stick to 5 hashtags or less). However, on platforms like Instagram, which is almost powered by hashtags, you can even try using the maximum number allowed (30 hashtags). The key here is to find the most relevant trending hashtags - in addition to less popular (but more engaging) "Community" hashtags with very active users. Plus, I think it's always a good idea to be open to experimenting with different types and numbers of hashtags on each platform - it's the best (and most fun) way to figure out what works for you. What nobody has explained in 14 videos so far is what is a hashtag. Why does a hashtag do what it does? Do people put a hashtag before a keyword before searching? How was this symbol designated to do what it does? Could that symbol have been another type of symbol? I hear what everyone is saying but no one is saying why it does what it does. Who decided on the first day to use that symbol and how did it become gospel.

Hey Christina! Yes... but not necessarily in a direct way... for example, you're probably thinking about the featured Video Snippets section on the first page of your Google Search results -- Google tends to favor videos from YT and Twitter for that area (esp YT). So if you see your video here, this means it is ranked high by the algorithm. Otherwise, if you share your vid on any other platforms, you can find them via the Video tab on Google Search... And about that not-so-direct way I mentioned above: even if your video is not very visible on Google, Hashtag Pages tend to rank well: so, if you have your video on Instagram, and someone searches for your hashtag via Google, they can find that Instagram Hashtag Page... and then find your video on that Hashtag Page. Hope this helps!! 💪

If you searched through the Video tab on Google and went through every result and couldn't find your video, this means that Google was not able to index it (usually due to insufficient information or privacy settings). If, however, the video simply doesn't appear in the featured Video Snippets section, but can be found somewhere on the latter pages (like page 25) of the Video tab for that hashtag, this means that you need to optimize your video for Google SEO. In general, Google should be able to index your video, making it searchable under that hashtag, as long as you fulfill these minimum requirements:
▪️ high quality thumbnail image
(JPG or PNG, 160x90 to 1920x1080 pixels)
▪️
title that includes your keyword: in your case, that's the hashtag
▪️ description that includes your keyword
▪️ "public" settings, and not "private" or "unlisted" for your video + profile
To optimize for SEO, remember to tag your video with that hashtag in the meta data, and you can embed your video on your website or blog if you have one to up your backlink ante, and share it on social with your network to increase traffic & engagement... all of these actions will help your video rank higher for that hashtag to get in the featured Video Snippet section on the first page of your Google search results (I must emphasize that this isn't easy though, especially if the hashtag is popular, and it takes time for Google to index content as well... so you may not see the effects of your work until many days later). How many hashtags are good to use on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn?
It depends on your topic / product / niche, etc. Ideally, you want to be keeping track of your results using different combinations of hashtags (number + type) on those platforms to find the best fit for you (it won't be the same for everyone)... but, in general, I wouldn't use more than 5 for LinkedIn (too many hashtags can look spam-y, and the LI algorithm may even classify your post as spam). And less is more on FB - more important than the number of hashtags used here is *relevance*. For IG, I would suggest using less than the maximum number of hashtags allowed (30), and try to find relevant trending hashtags as well as less popular (but more engaging) Community-based hashtags ~ hope this helps!!

No spaces in hashtags 🙂 For example, we use the hashtag #ChiaExplains for this video series (no space), because if there is a space between '#Chia' and 'Explains', then the hashtag is just #Chia. Not necessarily. Your post will definitely appear on the hashtag page for #crabs, but Instagram will generally show posts with very high levels of engagement (comments, likes, views, etc) to the people who are following #crabs in their feed. P.S. I ❤️ "A Crabby Story"!!! Your crabs are really cute, you may want to try Instagram Stories to reach more people too - hashtags also work in stories too ~

Hey Cornelius! If you want to use hashtags on Twitter, you can put them at the beginning or the end of the tweet, or even in the #MiddleOfTheMessage like I just did here (make sure you don't use any spaces in the hashtag, or the space will disconnect the words from the hashtag). The same goes for hashtags on Facebook and Instagram. Sorry I forgot to mention that ~ let me know if you have any other questions!
