Thanks for the great vids CJ, I watch them regularly. I have recently put a crate on my Giant Yukon and theft proofed it so nothing can be removed/stolen. I don't ride regularly, but if I only need a small amount of groceries I take the bike. Gets me off the couch!
I have a milk crate that i install on the back of my bike which I use to carry my 20 lbs dog. I secure it with U Bolts available at home depot. it is secure and can easily be installed/removed. Zip ties are good if you are carrying around general stuff but for precious cargo, go with the U Bolts!
EVATUBE1 I intend to create a carrier for my 20 lb dog too so I appreciate the tip about u-bolts. Wish you would do a video so I can see what you did 🙏
I have a bike with a create on the back bag carrier, however because my bike is a custom electric folding bike, I didnt have a place to attach the bag carrier correctly, so I screwed the 4 metal bars onto the side wheel like it said I should, then I used a bungee cord to wrap it around the seat to the carrier bar so it stays on. I then took a milk crate that was very wide, put it sideways on the bike (if i did long ways it was longer than the metal bar and i wanted it to be safe), and used 4 zip-ties to hold it there, along with a few extra bungee cords so it didnt fall sideways or fail in any way. The zip cords where just extra protection from my system failing. I just used 4 so its not so much of a pain to take it off, and used a lot of bungee cords so its easy to put on and off again. I then cut one of the handles off the crate so it wouldnt effect my seat as my seat bounces due to it spring and bumps in the road, so its not in the way. Also using a bungee cord tightly around the seat, makes the problem of "this wont attach to the back of my bike" problem no more.
Bought a new supercycle and I already got a milk crate. Just need a rack and some ties and i'm ready. Thanks for the tutorial, excited to get more utility out of my bike.
11 years later and I find exactly what I’m looking for! I have a question, if you ever have to remove the zip ties, what’s an easy way to cut them because I’ve tried with a box cutter and it’s hard so can you tell me what tool I would need to get them completely off? Just in case
he means a rubber mat in the bottom of crate to prevent things from dangling into your spokes, cardboars would work too. just cover up the mesh so it is non-porouz
I got it from an older bike that I had. I don't think they make this style of rack anymore. Your best bet would be a DIY bike shop which sells used parts.
I have never had any issues with the zip ties failing due to carrying too much load (and I certainly have subjected them to heavy loads!). However, the one thing I have had problems with is when riding in very cold weather (-15 Celcius or lower) the zip ties become very brittle and break quite easily under normal load conditions. As a result, I have recently resorted back to attaching my milkcrates using nylon string as I demonstrated in a previous tutorial in 2011.
can you please read to us those small prints on those milk crates :D you want super strong racks????? get those bed frame angle bars....cut them to size in L shape...... two pieces...then you have a super strong rack
That is something that I have definitely considered doing! However, I have concluded that all of the rust that I have on there probably helps to deter thieves from stealing the bike, so I haven't done anything about it.
If milk crates were available in England 🏴 I’d happily buy a lot of them as they are incredibly useful, but then again I can easily imagine them being stolen from the dary industries
Would you make another video on the green machine 2? I’d like to see how you rebuilt it as unfortunately everything on the bike was stripped off including your homemade bike light.
You can't buy milk crates in england? really? here in usa you can buy them online different sizes and in store....ask your local dairy shops that if you can buy from them, and if that didn't work, find a website that they can import it for you.
Having a useful bike doesn't mean you can't have a car. It's usually easier for me to get my exercise in while commuting rather than having to set time aside.

I was thinking about those too. Looks like im not the only one disappointed by the dog basket options out there!
I plan to do this for my scooter I just purchased - thanks for the tips in this video!
Good video and I've seen bikes in the city use the zip line technique. I like the idea of using u bolts too, may try that first.

Nice! In my opinion a milk crate is the most useful modification you can make to a bike for utility.
Milk crate looks cool for bicycle. I'll try it. Thank you!
It's an extremely practical way of carrying cargo, and I strongly recommend it.
I hear the crate increases the center of gravity making the bike less stable. have you noticed a difference when riding? thanks
great vid. maybe use rustoleum on the racks to stop the rusting
How big was the crate that you used?

My favourite tool for this is side cutters.
Very helpful and informative !
Thanks!
Hi, How is it holding up so far? And how much wait should you put in it
+NaRdOsF The string method that I showed in my first milk crate video works better. The maximum weight is mostly limited by the rack that you use.
Good setup btw do the crate rattles on bumpy roads?
If you make sure the zip ties are really tight you shouldn't hear any rattles.
Perfect for picking up hitchhikers.
I encourage all fellow bikers using a rack to install a suitable rubber mat before putting a crate 😎 .......enjoy and ride safely
?
Leo Azir how to instal that?? Please tell mw
he means a rubber mat in the bottom of crate to prevent things from dangling into your spokes, cardboars would work too. just cover up the mesh so it is non-porouz
I have a vintage bike and I have needed this specific bike rack for my frame! Where did you find it?
I got it from an older bike that I had. I don't think they make this style of rack anymore. Your best bet would be a DIY bike shop which sells used parts.
What's the limit to how much you can put into the crate before the zip ties give? How strong are the zip ties?
I have never had any issues with the zip ties failing due to carrying too much load (and I certainly have subjected them to heavy loads!). I'm going on a 90+ mile trip this summer and don't want to be adjusting the crate every half mile. How often do you have to adjust your crates?
Kyle Eskeitz
Try using zip ties and bungee cords, using both makes it a lot better.
thanks for the tip. I'll need it this weekend
use u bolt, another comment said this,.
you can use big zip ties, there are different sizes
Cars are passé.
Go Canada! Thanks, dude! :)
How do you get on or off the bike?
By lifting one leg over.
3:56 - you're welcome.
What are the dimensions of the bike crate?
These milk crates are a standard size. The inside dimensions are 12" x 12" x 10.5".
Omg im watching this year 2024
I'm having an issue with the crate pressing staffing the seat and in turn my back. 🤔
Rust adds character. You should be seeking out methods to add more rust, friend.
What is that medal board under the crate called???
You mean the metal rails that I attached it to?
+cjhoyle yesss
It's a cargo rack. For most bikes this is an accessory that you need to buy and add to the bike.
+cjhoyle thanks! I see that this is a great way to bring Pet along.
How big is the milk crate
The inside dimensions are approximately 12" x 12" x 10.5"
how to do you get a milk crate and a bike rack?
www.uline.ca/BL_313/Milk-Crates?keywords=Milk+Crate ->>> You can get a milk crate here, and bike racks can be found at any reputable bike shop.
can you please read to us those small prints on those milk crates :D you want super strong racks????? get those bed frame angle bars....cut them to size in L shape...... two pieces...then you have a super strong rack
Why not re-spray the whole bike after sanding all the rusts off?
That is something that I have definitely considered doing! However, I have concluded that all of the rust that I have on there probably helps to deter thieves from stealing the bike, so I haven't done anything about it.
thanks friend!

They're incredibly handy for so many different things!

Who else thinks he sounds like Garfield?
sick
just get that rack welded
prob solved
Aluminum welding? Sounds expensive :P
You could probably get away with just 4 zip ties.
You're welcome to try that, but I recommend using significantly more than that.
Please don’t talk about bike crate theory and just show me how to install the crate
Are you having a bad day or something?
maybe u should just buy a car...
Having a useful bike doesn't mean you can't have a car. It's usually easier for me to get my exercise in while commuting rather than having to set time aside.
***** yeah i love to ride, it saves gas and its actaully faster in a city like san francisco
You’re an idiot
