Pan Zhanle has not just broken a world record in the 100m free style, but he has also cast all skepticism, disbelief, and bad publicity around the doping scandal behind him. You are a true hero for the Chinese swimming team and your country. And the best thing is, you have not been tested positive for banned drugs. Nor are you asthmatic. That is true sportsmanship and Olympic spirit. Kudo to you, man.

He cleared his name, but not the nationwide scandal. The issue with this scandal is similar to those in Soviet Russia or Brazil's MMA scene during the early 2000s. It wasn’t just one or two athletes involved; it was a whole project or culture. It was incentivized by people with deep pockets, who used various methods to enhance performance. Cleaning up this mess takes time.

@@dark3rthanshadows I am sorry to say - there is no national scandal to begin, only a fabricated scandal targeting the Chinese swimmers that manifests that cultural and moral differences between America vs other countries. In case you don't know, here are the facts of a similar case that happened to an American ahtlete but the outcome is different. A 100m and 200m sprinter was tested positive on banned drug in March 2024. However, he was cleared by USADA on grounds of food contamination to compete in the Paris Olympics. Yet no media outlets talk about him. FBI has not investigated him. No fellow athletes complain about him. The general public do not bother to call him out and even thrive on his opportunity of winning medals for his country. The 23 Chinese swimmers were cleared by WADA, World Aquatics, IOC/Olympic Authority as well as by domestic sports authorities in China to compete in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and international races thereafter. Since the food contamination incident (noting urine samples collected in early January 2021, six months before the Summer Olympic in Tokyo), these Chinese swimmers were not tested positive - before, during and after the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Even being subjected to extreme drug testing - 7-10 more than their counterparts in other countries - in the Paris Olympics, these Chinese Olympic swimming contestants have not shown any positive tests to date. And they have won swimming medals despite enormous physical and psychological pressure stemming from these unfriendly drug tests and public pressure.

Pan has 5 of the 10 fastest 100-meter freestyle times in history. He actually only swam 0.40s faster than his WR in the final. He just made more progress. On the contrary, Kyle and David were just slower than their PBs. So there is nothing surprising or impossible about Pan 46.40. World records are broken by people all the time. This time it was just a Chinese guy who swam faster than them.
He is just 19 so I believe he can break 46s soon.

Shame the scheduling did not allow him to compete on that distance. I wish he had been able to complete on 100m freestyle in the relais, but he is just too good for breaststroke to pass on unfortunately. Next Olympic games we should see him beat this, especially since he can still gain additional muscle.
I wish Marchand would swim non US distances throughout the year but unfortunately his records in freestlyle are on the yard distance. One of the things about the gallop style of freestyle is the uneven cadence of the arm stroke. The breathing side arm stays extended just a bit for a slight pause, then when you start the pull, the recover arm is a quick pull. This results in the undulation that adds to the 'drive' forward and you are actually submerged a bit which reduces the drag, part from surface tension and part from reducing the bow wave. All of the male swimmers do this. Katie Ledecky and Summer Macintosh both swim this way. Ariarne Titmus swims an even cadence and breathes on a 2, 2, 3 or 4 beat arm stroke count. To date, no one has done an in depth study/explanation of the gallop style of freestyle.

Pan broke the record and by doing so also exposed a lot of bigotry & prejudice trying to paint a picture about doping which only revealed the following interesting facts.
    1) USA athletes have been caught 6x more than Chinese in doping.
    2) Chinese swimmers were tested an average of 7 times a day in Paris on arrival, including random tests midnight to 2am which completely disrupted their sleep. Imagine how hard it is for Pan to swim having needle stuck into his arms that many times for blood draws.
    3) Over half of US swimmers, including all the Paris gold medal winners are conveniently diagnosed as ASTHMATICS. Which allows for them to legally use bronchodilators which is a stimulant and gives significant advantage in how much air you can breathe in and out. Think trying to breath through a thin straw vs a fat one.
    4) The supposed scandal from 2021 where some Chinese swimmers tested positive for a banned heart medicine was cleared by two separate independent investigation. Tests only showed microscopic traces of the medicine. Consistent with food contamination.

My thoughts, as well. I love and I'm seeking out as many videos that analyze his technique. As a complete dead weight in the water, my layman eyes can still notice how smooth he was traveling in a straight-arrow line. Meanwhile my untrained eye can also detect the choppy progression of several swimmers beside him.
I'm seeking out as many videos that analyze his technique for expertise insights but I suppose with NBC's strict protection of its copyrights over full footage of his full performance (don't know how Fares was able to scrape enough scenes, as another youtuber mentioned NBC shut down his video and a few others are tapping into his swim from Doha instead), we're not getting the best frame-by-frame (yes slow motion would help for us noobs) or full coverage from start to finish in a continuous coverage. (Hope when Peacock pulls all the Olympics videos off its site, NBC might treat its youtube videos for public domain use).
Would love an analysis of a side-by-side with David Povicic, who appears to be his closest competitor. I've read comments the two are also quite similar in technique (I personally don't know).

When I see your Western comments on Pan Zhanle’s swimming news here, I think you are a group of sober-minded Westerners, which shows that there is still hope for the Western world. Who invented the pulse stroke technique in your opinion? Popovici also had a pulse swim where it’s two strokes and glide.
What is the difference in number of breaths taken between Pan and Popovici? Why has no one broken down oxygen strategy between the different top level sprint freestylers?
How does Pan manage to get his skull out ahead of all other swimmers in every race? after he rises he might not be first all the time but he is almost always got a full head of length ahead of everyone in the first fraction of a second after the gun, as if he is first to hear the gun or else he is doing some insane neck-speed drills.
Thanks for pointing out his extended glide on his breathing arm (i think he’s goofy foot) it really is prominent. he definitely gears up and pulses into it while his kick seems a constant motor-boat.
