    Yes you can charge it through the USB C ports, but you need a 100 W USB C charger (90 W may be enough to make it work).

      Does Lenovo actually offer such a USB-C charger? Most of its docks don't also seem to deliver such power either.

    This is a masterpiece! What an amazing device - it has everything one might want. I just bought the Yoga Slim 7 Pro Gen 6 (16" AMD) which is very similarly specced but more than twice as cheap :D I am coming from a venerable Thinkpad T430 so I hope my next machine after the Yoga to be a P1/X1 Thinkpad! Thank you for reviewing these niche but magnificent machines! :)

    Disaster!!
    Can't get any support! Email support but never gets an answer anywhere!
    Have so many awful problems with my P1 Gen4 so it's embarrassing! I now hate my brand new computer due to all the problems!
    Obvious quality problems, color missing on keyboard buttons, fans jerking, white spot on the screen, battery life max 4h, longer battery life on macbook 15 "from 2011, bios updates that kill usb-c / TB4 ports, bluetooth problems, fan problems, sleep mode don't work properly (hot even though led is fading), usb-chime sounds al the time. Fresh windows 10 install with all drivers updated.
    Catastrophically Embarrassing!

    I would like to see a video comparing it against the new M1 Macbooks 🔥

    • @Jackofafewtrades
      @Jackofafewtrades 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If you want MacOS, get the M1. If you need to run Windows software that needs certified drivers, get this. Unless you actually need those certified drivers on the GPU, or maybe ECC RAM, this is not a device you should get.
      These devices are kind of for completely different applications... Would be kind of pointless to compare, honestly.
      But if you're talking about raw CPU performance, the M1 will mop the floor with this in 99% of scenarios. It just doesn't have the horsepower to keep up. But if you need a Xeon, ECC and certified GPU drivers, you need em.

      @@Jackofafewtrades Thanks. If I get you right, this device is a workstation while the new M1 is for business users who like MacOS?

    • @Jackofafewtrades
      @Jackofafewtrades 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@mikebabz yes and no. It's a workstation, but it's a workstation not because its powerful, but because the drivers and chipset have special features that make it more compatible with certain programs. One example is CAD. In SOLIDWORKS and CATIA, you may have a consumer grade GPU that has way better specs than a workstation GPU (more CUDA cores, faster clock and more memory etc.) But it will almost certainly perform worse than a similar or even worse spec'd workstation GPU. This comes down to driver support and optimisations. Can also be seen in stability. Xeons are made to be rock solid stable (one of the perks of ECC too). The M1 machines may well outperform this in raw horses, but with those specific programs where you need that driver certification or those Xeon chipset features, the M1 will not be as good or straight up won't be compatible. You can use the M1 machines for a whole bunch of stuff including photo and video editing, coding, general productivity. Whatever you want. 99% of the time it'll perform great, until you need that specific support from workstation grade hardware and then it won't be as good as this.

    Mic audio is an expensive joke and general audio way behind Dell and Apple. Build quality is too 'gappy' in this price range and continues Lenovo's trend of slackness in quality control. Thermal control and throttling are sub standard and I got rid of mine after giving it a fair chance.
    We are in danger of just accepting low standards.

    The keyboard is the WORST. I mean it is awful!! Definitely not "ThinkPad" feel nor quality anymore. The keycaps are flatter and feel thin and cheap. You can feel what is underneath them. The spacing between keys feel narrower and the overall typing experience is just bad. What a shame for such an awesome machine otherwise and with some tweaks to the power profile, I average ~8hrs on battery doing moderate work with the 11850H, A3000, UHD+ 600nit model

    The touchpad on this thing is textured! Horrendous to use, at least for me. Makes an annoying rubbing sound EVERY SINGLE TIME I MOVE A FINGER OVER IT, quite disturbing my work-flow. I've placed plastic over the pad for a smoother feel, but of course that doesn't do use of the touchpad justice. How do I get a smooth glass touchpad? Or, is the textured surface a mere sticker that can be peeled off like in some older ThinkPads? Please let know...I don't want to risk peeling it off if it will damage this expensive machine. And yet, here I got an expensive machine, and can't use it as is without getting very annoyed by the ceaseless ill feel and noise. Help.

Seeing the review you did of the X1 and the comment from Tango Down above, I'm wondering if I should just get the P1 and spec it with the Quadro T1200 - I don't play games, as long as it's fast enough to play 4k video and work quickly with KiCAD I'd be fine - allegedly the TDW of those is only 18 watts?

    Nice PC. Port selection excellent. Like the easy access to the insides for user upgrades. For a mobile workstation or any PC 15 inch or larger this should have a full size tenkey on it. These manufacturers should offer two iterations of these units one with a tenkey and the other without. This way they can satisfy both camps of users. Now one can use the argument about the additional cost of doing this but this is already costly. The 1080p webcam was nice and clear but the microphones on this sounded badly muffled. Lenovo needs to work on this especially for the price one is paying for this. I noticed near the end of this review when you are holding this up that this is somewhat a fingerprint magnet. Also noticed when you had the item up on the cdw website the availability is backordered and CDW cannot guarantee and in-stock date. Something to be aware of if ordering this from them. Great review as always.
