  • Hello world, as you can see, this is my very, very first video and as such, I would like you to be kind to it :')
    I would very much appreciate it if you'd drop a comment on what you think about it, have a discussion, and maybe even give a few critiques to how I can improve in the future.
    I really wonder whether or not people are going to actually read this section, but my hope for the future of this channel is for a place where video essays and vlogs can co-exist.
    A subscribe would be much appreciated as well :)

    Well, it's been near 4 years since I made this video, and how poorly/well this has aged. Shield Hero really took a turn for the worse, but fear not my friends, because Mashoku Tensei is here to save the genre, please go stream Masoku Tensei, it's really a fantastic show :>

      Shield Hero was never anything special, since episode 4 of season 1 it just became more and more generic, not to mention Naofumi's loli harem and the idea that slavery is fine

      There are many isekai that have an interesting premise but many/most of them devolve. Some after a few episodes, some after a season or a few. Even Mushoku Tensei devolves IMO. It starts strong but eventually ends the same. Its redeeming quality being that it may have been the first one to do so and that originality (being the first) somewhat saves it. I think that it's only a matter of time until Mushoku Tensei ends up as Shield Hero.

      Just give up friend! Many of these's Anime I found are better off in Manga form and never should have gotten an anime! So far only Konosuba to me is the best in Manga AND Anime form! (And maybe Bookworm, but I'm getting into the Manga right now after watching the anime full along with the LN to see how much was changed or ironed out! Somethings I don't mind, but critical things I DO mind!) I long guessed the Anime would iron important shit, character's, lore, ETC out in the WORSE way for Shield hero to show off in later seasons (thank god enough chapters for the manga came out before they put a halt to it's pace....TOO Bad Masoku Tensei is getting this treatment now :( God I'm starting to HATE anime!) Frankly it's the movie version of Hunger Games all over again where the first movie ironed out alot shit for time that the sequels had to put back in in a weird noticeable fashion! This is why I dislike this format (Movie, Tv Show, Anime, ETC) where because they don't know if they are making a sequel/new season, they try to cram too much shit into one season and take out shit that will bite them in the ass later! (Hence why I like Manga even more)
      Only thing anime does justice for is the combat parts of a series, but I will always be a manga/WN/LN man cause at least with the Manga, you'll only get 25% or less content from the LN/WN changed or removed! While Anime they usually "go too fucking far" that there's BARELY ANY MEAT! Or in Shield Hero they ruin specific points for "Cool factor or whatever!" Also FUCK you "said sarcastically" ShreN, and lets be real....you can say ALOT of Isekai especially the great ones can be accused of the "Slavery is fine" part....but the BAD ones are the ones that REALLY go into it!

    Smart phone’s concept could have worked if they didn’t make the main character overpowered, they could have had him like learn martial arts, learn how to sword fight, making stuff like Molotov cocktails or traps to fight monsters. It would be like dr.stone/ascendence of a bookworm where the protagonist is weak but they use the vast knowledge they’ve got to solve problems.

    I just thought of an idea for a story where the main character isn't the person who was isekaid, and is just a side character. At first, they are a one tone character and a one tone protagonist. Eventually, they get their own goals and ideals, and try to break away from the main character to follow them. However, the main character doesn't want this. THEY are the main character, THEY always get their way. The "Hero" antagonizes and gaslights the true MC, and the MC tries to brake away
    I dunno if its any good just an idea i had

    • @Calt_Clerity
      @Calt_Clerity 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@phantomlord77 I sorta am interested in the idea of there being two isekai protagonists, 1st protagonist is the supposed generic hero and then 2nd protagonist is the unrealistic Side character. Both of them and 5 were isekai'd to another world on the "good side" to "be the bane of the 7 deadly sins", however due to a conflict, the group splits into two teams/two different storylines. One defending the "evil" team. And one defending the "good" team. Every now and then, their storylines would interact, either for the good or for the bad.
      Overtime in this supposed Anime, the two sides would eventually realize their own faults ( not everything revolves around them: redemption arc ), try to mend their mistakes ( ex: regret making rash decisions ), discover themselves ( their value isn't just "love interest" ), and salvage their friendships to destroy a common enemy ( harmonization and unity ). The common enemy wasn't the "evil" side nor the "good" side, the common enemy was the goddess who brought them into the isekai world. The motive that the goddess had for bringing them into the isekai world was because she was bored. She needed amusement. She wanted to cause a war by making the two kingdoms in that world to war over the heroes over the mindset "they'll help us destroy the horrible kingdom next to us".
      I know this sounds super generic. Its not the best writing since I rushed through the typing. And there's probably a boring anime like it. I just wanted to dive into this idea for a moment, and I can't type down every idea I had for this supposed isekai world. Also I apologize for it being super long. Hope you have a good day though!

    • @phantomlord77
      @phantomlord77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Calt_Clerity That does sound interesting. I like the concept of there being two groups because so many times you only get the protag POV and usually paint anyone who opposes them as bad like Slime or Spider. Until the other characters become relevant, but with that you could have the same situation handle from two sides and both having a point.
      Maybe have characters shift allignments and motivations overtime. The problem I have with most Isekais/ fantasy stories is hero is always right no matter what. When the hero can commit genocide and it's the right thing to do I basically give up on a story

      The main reason being, Raphthalia stopped acting like a child after the S1E4 palace scene (and no, she doesn't turn into a child in front of Naofumi in S2, LN & Manga at least, and also she doesn't act as a child but an adult).

That story was scraped, as ridiculous stuff happened in it and it was just bad writing, in the LN, it will not be a harem for sure. Why? First of all, Melty already has a love interest (no SPOILERs for now), and Sadeena will mostly be rejected by Naofumi, so it will not be a harem.
      If you read the LN, you will see that by the ending 4-5 volumes, writer went full GENERIC ISEKAI mode, and fans were pissed off by that, well, the Spear Hero spin off was great, but Malty as a god and main Villain, bad writing...

Watching videos like these really helps me to weigh my options carefully when it comes to the characters themselves, so, while I don't think I'll be actually writing it soon (as in publishing it), I hope it doesn't turn into a project I have to rush through and will feel comfortable to write about for whenever I feel that the story is prepared enough to go. Isekai I would want to see:
    Guy gets sucked into a alternate fantasy world, gathers a harem of female party members he never acts on, becomes a god hero, vanquishes the Dark Lord. And for his wish, he wishes to return to his world. And then the first episode starts. Our hero is absolutely miserable back in his own world, longing to escape back to the Isekai world but unable to do so. Eventually, he starts to believe it was some sort of psychotic break and moves on with his life.
    Until members of his harem show up on his doorstep with news that the child of the Dark Lord has followed him to exact revenge. Shocked that their God Hero Paramour is just a “ordinary” guy and no longer has any super powers, they are more shocked at their own changes. Their skimpy armor is useless, cold, and chafes like a BITCH! Their magic is gone, they find that they can no longer move at super human speeds, nor can the punch through concrete. The elf is getting wrinkles, the sweet, caring priestess is losing her shit, the 110 pound warrior Princess is no longer a match for a 200 pound man, and just what the hell is a PERIOD!?
    With no one else they can rely on, the “harem” must rely on their thoroughly less impressive “Hero” to survive in the real (devoid of magic) world. It would be a Anti-Isekai, Anti-Harem story.

    What *I* don't understand is why an inventive, original fantasy world and a well-written story are mutually exclusive so often. We can have both it ain't hard. Why not a fantasy world that's advanced far beyond our own civilization, for example? The protagonist from our modern day ends up in a magical space age where titanic dragons fly through the void of space and where Elven space marines and battleships face off against Doom-style Demon legions. Wouldn't that be nifty?

      They don't even need to be fantasy, Isekai can be set in any and every time period or location, but they keep beating the Undead horse.
      I'd like to see a victorian Isekai, or maybe a kid gets cryo-stasis'd and wakes up in the future, or you know what would be really cool, Wild West Isekai (A final fantasy series tried to do this in the early 90s, but they never finished)
      And of course I want interesting characters to react to that world in interesting ways. Speaking of the shield hero, one of the biggest things that ticked me off about it is how none of the heroes (idiots they may be) used none of their experiences to interact with the world. Ren is from the future, Itsuki pretty much comes from My Hero Academia, Motoyasu I don't know his deal. I can't reasonably believe that none of their experiences could have shaped their interactions in a reasonable way.
      P.s. I'm pretty sure no one wants to be isekaid into 40k, but it'll be pretty cool to watch.

    My favorite Isekai are: welcome to demon academy Iruma Kun, Ascendance of a bookworm, the saint’s power is omnipotent, 12 kingdoms (just get through the first 6 episodes, I promise a ton of character development happens), dr stone, etc.
    Also in a story where you reincarnate the ADULT protagonist into a baby/child my option is that you should avoid writing any romance into it until they grow up fully. It’s gross and not a great relationship dynamic. I just don’t want to see stories with that! Looking at you Mushoku Tensei!!! Shows like Ascendance of a bookworm do a amazing job with that though

  • @higorgabriel2598

    Haven't watched the video, so I'll state my opinion before watching, in my opinion, a bad Isekai fails to create a compelling and interesting world and have its characters interact with it. In my favourite Isekai: ascendance of a bookworm, a lot of te conflict of the story stems from the common sense of the main character clashing against the common sense of those around her, and the way she thinks makes people see her as a genius, a fool, a saint and cruel person all at the same time, the way she interacts with this new world means she either makes terrible blunders helps the people around her understand their world in a way they never thought possible, and I think that is what makes a good Isekai, and it's also a big part of great standard fantasy anime, the way the world works and how characters work around it will always be the most interesting part for me.

    I, probably, am going to pick I fight here, but ... Most of the recent Isekai's aren't really a "Isekai story"!
    Most of them have too little to do with the actual Isekai and are more focused with the powers and fantasy.
    Them being outworlders is a irrelevant part of the story!
    Their family and friends on the previous world doesn't have influence their development (if they have any, they're, at most, a excuse for the mc wanting to go back). Their beliefs are easily changed by the new world. A little number of protagonists actually use common knowledge of our world to improve their situation (those who use, mostly use knowledge that's actually uncommon). And the bullied kids, end up with their trauma being more related to what happened during or after the Isekai than anything prior.
    Make a test, pick Shield Hero and think: "what would happen if they're just some people picked at random isolated villages around the kingdom?" Would it change anything after the first couple of chapters?
    Naofumi's trauma is all related to Myne. His skills are most, if not all, related to the Weapon's System. His "Hero qualities" are all attributed to him being a "good kid" and his hard work to improve himself after the betrayal.
    Personally, anime like ShieldHero, Arifureta, Overlord and some others, that may be your favorites, I don't like to call them "Isekai". They are mostly a Fantasy Story with hero summoning (or reincarnation) being a initial detail.
    Just for comparison, look at Tanya the Evil:
    Her main motivation is to prove BeingX(the one that Isekaied him) wrong. Although she gained talent for magic from BeingX, what makes her the Biggest asset in war is his knowledge about history and management of human resources. Surprising enough, most of her qualities are derived from his work ethics before the Isekai.

    • @immortaldivinity
      @immortaldivinity 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes exactly!
      I read more isekai manhwa than manga but them being otherworlders doesn't add much on to the plot of the story.
      It's just that they came from another world and that's that. Really they could've just been born in the exact same world they were isekai'd in, and 99.9% of the story would've remained unchanged.
      Like if you want to write a fantasy harem story just do that, no need to add in isekai too when they will barely mention it on the first place 💀

  • @jlawsl
    @jlawsl 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think there are at least 5 categories to these shows. You have actually good shows with good character development, art, style, world building and self awareness, kind of like Mashoku Tensei, 12 Kingdoms or Made in Abyss. I see the later show as a form of Isekai. No, the MC didn't die or get transported somewhere but they quite literally delve into another world.
    Then you have guilty pleasure, power fantasy where there may have been a goal or drive for the MC in the first half of the first season, but that all died out as they just kept riding that cash cow. Examples of this is SAO, Overlord or really any other show that is based in a "game". In those shows, the characters, from day one are already known to be among the best and most powerful in that setting. There is no growth for them. The whole basis of the show revolves around the awe, admiration and fear of the scrub characters all going, "OMG, wow he is so powerful". There is barely ever any challenge to the overall power of the MC from the offset, or if there is, any challenge is gone by the second season. More examples include That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime, Rise of the Shield Hero and Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest. These are usually the most popular ones that get multiple seasons because the premise takes no thought after establishing the power fantasy.
    Then there are just fun ones that really don't take themselves too seriously, that focus more on character development then being self insert power fantasies. Examples to me are Boruri, Isekai Ojisan or Konosuba. The problem with shows like this is that they are carried far more on the writer then anything else. To me, Hataraku Maou-sama!! season 1 was fun and funny to watch. I watched that show over and over, then the second season came out and I couldn't get passed episode 6. Another show that captured the same feeling is The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!
    The fourth group is pretty much just trash. They are either one dimensional, without the characterization or budget of the first two groups or they don't have the comedy or likeability of the third group. It is probably some studio making a filler season of something simple to keep people online. Examples are Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni, Maou-Sama Retry, Death March, Choujin Koukousei-tachi wa Isekai demo Yoyuu de Ikinuku You Desu! and Tensei Kenja no Isekai Life: Dai-2 no Shokugyou wo Ete, Sekai Saikyou ni Narimashita. Most shows like these came out after a big hit and tried to capitalize on it by making it a copy paste of what was popular and the studio just bought the rights to the closest manga at the time.
    The fifth group is pretty hit and miss. There can be characterization and world building but it seems like there are stories based on the writer's own hobbies. One could call most of them lazy at their worst, uninspired or boring. You could also call the best ones well thought out or educational. This group is any of the niche isekais that focus on a VERY specific aspect of the "other world". Cooking, medicine, etc.
    Apart from the trash shows, I think one of the major contributors to a bad, lazy or repetitive show is how important the ubiquitous JRPG system is in show. If it is center stage and its always reminded that IT is the reason why the MC is an OP weapon of mass destruction and that they aren't any more intelligent, charismatic or powerful OTHER then the fact that they have some broken "in game" ability that they never really earned, then you have a lazy show that will probably fade in time.

    I've been writing an isekai story since I was 16 (more specifically started aged 16, forgot it for a few years and am back to it now after realising I dropped gold) and even back then there was an understanding of a trashy isekai that's somehow gotten worse since, which pushed me to make the story the exact opposite of typical trashy isekai in as many ways as I could without making it bad... some worldbuilding, planning and growing past getting mad that money grubbing companies and lazy people being money grubbing companies and lazy people later and it's just what I kinda think isekai should be in general.
    The world should be interesting. The character's time on Earth before being isekaid should matter to the story, especially in their behaviour and personality. Other characters should be interesting. Actual conflict and challenge to engage the viewer. Horny seems to be inevitable just as something that happens naturally and a necessity because money but at least do it tastefully... funny thing is that these are kinda just things you expect from any fantasy / doesn't-take-place-on-Earth story.
    It's insane how this has gotten so bad. How can they have so much just straight up telling them how to make something good and still do bad?

A really big problem with the novel is that there are way too many characters so you don't know much about the harem members or other characters. I agree. My main issue with isekai stories is that, most of the time, I look back on the story and plot and ask: what did being from a different world add to this?
      9 times out of 10? Nothing.
      Most of the stories with isekai’s would be amazing stories in their own right, so why do we need a MC from a different world? I find it much more compelling to watch someone from within a world grow and learn then to have someone transport or reincarnate in with all the answers (or ‘almost’ all the answers because Whoops! they didn’t reach the end of the book before getting sucked in!!!). That’s the biggest flaw I see in stories like that.

And it’s the same thing, like, why not have a compelling villain/antagonist who grows and matures and redeems themselves naturally? Why do we have to have an isekai protagonist who knows how things will end/play out? Maybe it’s just me, but those types of stories always feel like a cop out to avoid actually developing a character.

That's like what they did to Tails in Sonic Forces where he went from being brave and bad ass enough to take on eggman and similar threats to "now needing Sonic to save him like a Damsel in Distress!), Lolibaba (Fuck that noise, getting tired of it now, while I'm okay with them as NON-Love Interests, I LOATHE when they ARE being pushed as such) and the Harem Army (where the Pro-kun is surround by so many girls that he needs a HUGE mansion to house them all and they all love him....just because! There's a reason I LIKE protagonists like Suburu, Kazuma, Naofumi and hell even Satou from Death March! Oh yeah and Rudy! ESPECIALLY Rudeus! They have their own FUCKING PERSONALITIES! They are not build to be the Reader/Viewer Avatar or slightly not a complete one that they feel REAL and make realistic choices and suffer consequences both good and bad! I brought up Satou because after a second look, he's given me a reason to be okay with his type of Protagonists! The anime didn't do justice much for Death March)
    Tropes I tolerate can be OP protagonists if everything else including their personalities are good (started loving Manga Fantasy with the naive OP ones! Like "Kanchigai No Atelier Meister" where the Protagonist is a good kid who is OP as FUCK but doesn't see it because of his personality and is too critical of what others think of him to really notice it! And so the people around him are looking out for his best interest as those before have exploited and abuse the poor kid! He does have ONE guardian though, but she's forbidden from doing too much so the best she can do is infiltrate TROUBLEMAKERS he's gotten associated with if their not in his best interest and lead them into kicking him out in arrogant belief that he's useless) and I like the story! The part I like about reincarnated as a slime compared to something similar like "reincarnated with my smartphone" is that Rimuru companions are the usual focus of getting strong and have the best fights over Rimuru who is utilized in the right way that I compare it to how One Piece handled it's fights! Luffy's fight with the Big Bad of that arc or their Dragon (CP9) are the highlight Arc ending fights so they are good! But the fights with his nakama and the other members of the Big Bad's Entourage are equally as good because I LOVE all the main characters and their fights are not only structured and shown well, but the minion they're fighting isn't just shown out of nowhere! They are given equal amount of showtime as their Boss the Arc Big Bad and "The Dragon" Superior so their ACTUAL character's! While with Smartphone the protagonist is the ONLY FUCKING COMPETANT INDIVIDUAL! His "harem" barely do anything but praise him or whatever! It's like "But if close your eyes, does almost feel nothing has changed at all" meme where if you removed them, would the story have changed much! Maybe the "Japan like fantasy kingdom" might not have happened without Samurai girl, but was it needed?) Frankly when it comes to protagonists, I love me my "Middle of the road" like Naofumi where they start poor and work their way to the OP status! (The problem with WEAK protagonists like Suburu is they do them in an annoying fashion DIFFERENT then Suburu because his copies don't have "Return by Death" loops plot armor! And I'm saying Plot Armor for that in Suburu case in a GOOD way! But without that, the writer ends up making them USELESS and I'm now wondering WHY I EVEN CARED TO READ/WATCH THEIR STORY AGAIN?. Writers have to be careful about abusing said weak characters, Otherwise you come off as mean-spirited! I've seen ALOT of copycats of Naofumi who decide it's a SMART idea to take too fucking long having Karma hit the assholes who fucked the MC over at the start of the story because they want to drag things out and end up causing me to stop caring! You can only dangle those plot threads enough to my cat like mind before I realize "I'm not catching it anytime soon and your fucking with me" and lose interest! While in Shield Hero, The length before shit goes downhill for those who fucked with Naofumi is great enough that I enjoyed his rising from the shit pit they dropped him in! And happy when the "Bitch and Trash" get what's coming to them! And the Three Stooges later down the road! But what I do like is their redemptions minus Bitch because it gives them more character, chance to redeem themselves while at least acknowledging their own fuck ups and how they were fell so low minus Spear Hero but then he's an idiot hero who at least somewhat learned his lesson and is aiming his spear at "the right targets" now! And further improves the character growth of Naofumi himself! Going more into his "Rising" as he's slowly learning to trust again and even forgive! But showing he will NEVER forget in the right manner of not getting caught with his pants down again! While RIGHTFULLY despising Bitch/Witch as she's the only one who refuses to change and her begging when she's about to get her just deserts from him just to go back to smug and bitchy as before cements that she will never change and it's best to put her down now! Especially after what she does LATER to cement her as the only one to bring out the WORST in him thankfully directed at her, but still it's not an easy sight for his companions to see him in where he's bloodthirst Captain Ahab for her death!)

    I think arifureta is also on the mid side of isekai show, the anime is just sh*t with its pacing that it feels so bland. The ln tho is actually a fun read. Although it also has that same "harem-fanservicy" trope, I think the girls still has a good motivation of why they decided to join the harem.
    Yue, doesn't have anything to lose for anymore and joining Hajime was her only choice, Shia who finally found the people who has the same constitutions as her(she's a taboo child) so she wanted to join them, Tio whose purpose in goind to the main land was to gather information about the summoned heroes only joined Hajime's party at first as some kind of envoy. There are more but i think this is enough.

    So long as the isekai can suspend my disbelief and entertain me, I don't ask for a whole lot. I love SAO, tensura slime, spirit chronicles, no game no life, shield hero. All entertaining in their own way, each with characters who are likable and stories I want to see. Are all of them the greatest thing ever written? No and that's okay. Brain candy is important.
