AI is the buzzword of the moment. Subject tracking is based on neural networks or machine learning for some time now, it's just that it wasn't trendy to say it.
11:01 Damn - I have to say that Lok knows how to make using SD cards and Card doors so slick! This is the second time in one month where he makes taking out the SD card look so sexy.
I still have and use a 5Dmk4 and I see no reason to upgrade..... *BUT* I recently used an R8 which isn't in the same class as something like an R5 and I was still blown away by the autofocus.... I mean I was taking pictures of pigeons and it knew to focus on the birds eye! I'd be doing that manually with the little joystick on my 5D! Really has me thinking now...
Did the Custom White Balance on video mode improve? Or I still need to go tho photo mode, take a picture, go back to video mode and use the photo as a reference?
Fairly weird set of specs across the two - I'm particularly surprised they stuck with 24MP for the R1 as it really doesn't stand out much from the R3, and costs significantly more 🤔 The R5II probably makes more sense, but it still overheating when recording 4K without the fan attached is pretty wild considering how many other cameras perform better than that. Hopefully they'll fix that in the final firmware 🙈 Maybe it would have lasted longer if on a tripod with some airflow going through the bottom vent? The shift to electronic shutter makes sense though - AF tracking of fast subjects is significantly improved without the blackout of a mechanical shutter in my experience. I do like that they kept the mechanical shutter too, though quite how much use it'll get is another question.
It was the scenario he was in. When he ran low on battery during his recording test, he plugged it into USB power. Anytime you plug a battery in low power state, it will heat up during recharge mode, especially during fast recharge. So to do fast recharging while also recording is a double whammy. Take your phone down below 10% and then plug it to an outlet. Feel your phone after a few minutes of charging. It'll be hot.
well, it was kind of unfair in the overheating because you were charging a nearly dead battery while recording. It's not a common scenario. In real life, people would most likely switch to a new battery than run off USB power. If you have USB power from the beginning, it will also not result in overheating because at that point, you are trickle charging the battery. But you waited until you ran out of battery before charging while still wanting to record. Even phones and laptops will get very hot while charging from low charge.
Which I’ve mentioned it all, complete transparency; and mentioned because I didn’t have much time left. It’s also a beta test camera, as mentioned too. Everybody should take it with a grain of salt.
@JohnDrummondPhoto it is also when you have your body strapped to you body and the body will move around. Now why would you not secure it in your camera bag if it is raining? Welll. Hehehe
Yes water can get in, but it is still weather proof; it must mean the “channel” is still sealed from other parts of the camera. So water can gets in, even go through all the way down, but won’t get to electronics
No, it usually doesn’t help with other cameras even without vent too. The reason is I didn’t bring a tripod to the trip, but I did put a lens cap under the camera to get it a bit elevated from the desk. Two things to consider about this test: a lot of other cameras I tested before did better under the sun, and this is a beta testing camera.
The overheating is a complete non-starter for me. Considering how much of a problem it is for Canon, they should start offering cameras in silver or white.
@@zegzbrutal Nope, not if you are making documentaries, or anything really where you need to rely on the camera not crapping out on you. I've experienced it before, it's a major no-go.
The lack of a tilt screen on this camera makes it, along with the R1 worth $0 in my eyes. They are both terrible cameras for Street, Landscape and Photojournalism.

WTF Cannon. R1 weak features severely overpriced. Nike Z9 came out two years ago and blows it out of the F-ing water. The Z9 Nikon has third party lenses will auto focus with all brands of lenses free firmware updates great auto focus 45MP STACKED and is $800 cheaper. Shutter shield etc. Cannon is out of their minds. The Nikon Z8 is no different than the R5II and is $800 cheaper.
What a very extensive test for a "first Lok hands-on" test !
Haha I tried to do as much as I can, but they are still beta testing cameras, so I really can’t say this is a full review.
First Lok 😎✨
First "first Lok" I get of the R1! Instant thumbs up!

I’m old, so I just bought an old digital Leica last summer. It got auto white balance, auto iso and stuff like that. 🤙🏻

That sports tracking mode may need more light than you had in that dark gym. Fro's experience with it, in much better light, was amazing.
It was pretty bright though when they have the basketball demo
Awesome ! But I don’t need 3000000fps ❤
Here i am looking at review of my future camera... hope to buy it more or less around 2050.

I don't know about AI, Lok. But if I could show my camera a basketball and say "track this" and it did, then yes, I think AI would be good to have.
Superb video, thank you for sharing your impressions! Love that courtside talking angle, superb lighting
hmm, if there's vents, does it let the water come in from the rain?
Yes, if you hold it upside down. More seriously, I understand the passive cooling vents don't expose any electronics.
@JohnDrummondPhoto it is also when you have your body strapped to you body and the body will move around. Now why would you not secure it in your camera bag if it is raining? Welll. Hehehe
they say its still weather sealed
