So interesting and beautifully illustrated! We did the round voyage with Havila this year (inspired by your videos of the route), so are now further inspired to take the Hurtigruten Express 😊. Thank you, David, always enjoyable to share your experiences and knowledge of Norway.

The wife and I took this very Svalbard Express cruise this last Aug/Sept. First, be aware that our cruise missed Traena and Reine due to weather conditions. Other ports were substituted for these. Second, any of the excursions you take can exhaust most of the time you'd otherwise have in port to explore the port itself. We took a RIB boat out of Longyearbyen to see birds and scenery. Mostly we got pounded to pieces as the boat was rocked as it transited through continuous waves and then saw only a very few birds. I do not recommend this excursion as it was unpleasant and caused us to miss most of Longyearbyen. We did go by the Russian settlement at Barentsburg on our way into Longyearbyen. Don't expect to see any polar bears at Svalbard; they are few and far between given the time in port, and aren't welcome by locals anyway given their deadly nature. Excursions out Andalsnes on a train and alternatively on a bus up to the inland plateau were each canceled due to a landslide on the road and difficulties with the train. An excursion out of Alesund took us by Geirangerfjord which was nice. But that same excursion eliminated time for seeing Alesund itself which was disappointing.
Finally, though breakfast is generally available from 7:30 to 9:30, on the day of returning to Bergen, the boat mandates that passengers be out of their cabins by 8 am, which I don't recall being announced at the time of purchase and which is, to my way of thinking, really early given all the packing that has to be done to achieve the mandated cabin exit. You can store your baggage near the ship gangway while doing your final breakfast. But geez, requiring such an early cabin departure is a bit beyond the pale for a trip where risings are generally far later and without the immediate packing.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! Nothing you've said surprises me (in fact, excursions are supposed to replace the option of independent exploration, and an 8am cabin departure is the same on all cruise lines worldwide) so I guess it's just about having the right expectations going into the trip, so I'm sure this comment will help some travellers. Thanks for watching 🙌

We were also disappointed by the time in Longyearbyen on the Svalbard Express (now Svalbard Line). We arrived mid afternoon and had booked the e-bike excursion (this was one of only two Hurtigruten excursions we booked for the entire 2 week voyage all others we either explored independently or booked the same excurions ourselves for a much lower cost). The e-bike excursion did not depart for an hour after our arrival - giving us a wasted hour where we did not have time to see anything of Longyearbyen so were killing time on the boat (following a day at sea this was unwelcome). The bike tour itself was good, but by the time we arrived back to the settlement, all of the museums and small shops and husky cafe were closed. In hindsight I would not have done the e-bikes and would have explored the settlement, though my husband would still do the e-bikes, so it's horses for courses.
I think the Signature Voyages market themselves on having extended time in port compared with the Coastal Express but the journey south very much felt like we were speeding back to Bergen with very short port stops to stretch our legs, there was very little time in each port even for those of us not taking an excursion. That said our favourite port was the research station at Ny-Ålesund which was on the southbound leg.
If I could plan my holiday again I would just do the northboaund leg Bergen to Longyearbyen and stay for a few days in Longyearbyen - but would book a boat trip to Ny-Ålesund.
We also experienced high winds in September and diverted to the eastern side of Senja and docked in Finnsnes instead of Torsken. Then the following day Harstad replaced Stokmarknes and Svolvær (I was disappointed to have missed the chance to visit the Hurtigruten Museum). But a reminder to anyone who has port changes to check your travel insurance as we were able to claim £600 as a couple under the missed ports cover.
Finally, we were pleasantly surprised by the arrangements for disembarkation. This was the only cruise I have been on to date where I did not have to place my heavy luggage outside my cabin the night before. So being able to do my final packing on the morning was bliss. A room was set up for luggage storage and then we had plenty of time to enjoy a final breakfast before disembarking and getting a shuttlebus to our hotel.
