Joe is one of the best British fighters ever to be produced. Pure quality, he doesn’t seem to get the love from the casual fans but most fight fans will have him right up there.

Joe was such an inspiration to me as a kid! I used to sit there watching Joe fight and sit there in awe!
... he slaps... well the truth is if he slaps, he slaps hard!
Also people forget joe was in agony with his hands for about 4 years! No boxers would do that these days! A true great!

@@andywyatt5323 love Joe but not sure about that probably of what we consider 'modern times' along with Lennox and maybe the brilliant Buchanan. But historically real competition from Cerdan, Fitzsimmons and probably the greatest of them all, another Welshman in Jimmy Wilde, the ghost with the hammer in his hand ended up with a record of 131 fights 3 losses and one draw, went undefeated for his first 103 fights (Fk Mayweather's 49) and unbelievably 98 wins by KO which for a flyweight is simply unimaginable. Considered by Ring Magazine, the bible of boxing as the greatest flyweight in history and the 3rd best puncher who ever lived. He would be my number 1 with Calzaghe and Lennox close at number 2 (tough to split them)

As an Englishman (with a Welsh grandfather) I can really only offer Lennox Lewis as competition for best British fighter, I loved Joe and all this crap about only fighting at home, he was the champion, that's what the champion does - if you want the title you go to his back yard and take it, that's always been the case but they somehow use it against Joe.

Calzaghe was one of the hardest fighters to get the better of in a 12 round fight. Iron chin, marathon runner stamina and those clusters of shots that were a product of his father's off the cuff training style that worked almost exclusively for him. Sadly, he spent too many years under FW being paid decent money for underwhelming opponents that he dominated and this I think is why Joe was largely forgotten in retirement as he doesn't have the dramatic moments nor the volume of quality opponents despite being one of the best the UK ever produced.

Iron Chin, Don't me laugh. He chose to stay with warren coz he kept him undefeated, Robin Reid fight should of been a draw. Sorry never call someone the greatest who never had a trilogy or a rematch. Fighting firemen ffs and fighters with no amateur record. Don't blame warren he could've left him years ago but wouldn't get his way in the US
. Kessler, Reid were good fights
.. sorry lacy was a bully but got hit by Joe with the palm of his gloves all night. Didn't buy the Jones fight coz I was sick of seeing a bankrupt legend being knocked out, oh wait..he mocked Jones all night, what was that all about??? How many British fighters have been has high as Calzaghe in the P4p lists? Not many, which again shows how wrong you are, old button.
How many fighters since WWII have won 3 consecutive ABA/National titles at 3 successive weights in 3 consecutive years? I believe he is the only one. You mug him off, but he was quality.

Go to any list for supermiddleweights and you see Joe tops most if not all and yes above Andre ward . I can think this bitterness stems from the fact he beat their beloved Jones Jr and Hopkins they cant stand it so use every excuse possible but then forget that Roy Jones was on a winning streak going into that fight with a win over Felix Trinidad and Hopkins would win a world title after losing to Joe not bad for a bunch of washed up fighters and let's also forget that calzagjes hand were shot and he was forced to retire after these bouts, let's forget that tho let's pretend Joe was in his prime eh😂

What gets me is even though Joe never lost a fight Google search will not recognize Joe cazaughe even equal to Rocky Marciano because Joe is not even mentioned in the articles.
I suspect this is partly because Joe was not from the United States and managers when building a champion they don't want someone to mess it up from a hard hitter like Joe.

I’m not certain at any point that anyone would of beat Joe….. he proved every time he stepped in the ring regardless of opponent that he was world class….. he always found the answer not perfect but an absolute warrior!!!!’
Jeff Lacey will always be a fighter that never made it but nobody thought Calzaghe was the same league but proved he was one above and then showed Kessler the same level… All the time with shattered hands…. Let’s not dispute how good he was let’s just agree he’s a special talent 👍

BHop was an oddity who peaked in his 40s. Before Joe he'd just beaten Trinidad and Jermaine Taylor and a year after losing to Joe he beat the up coming Kelli Pavlick. And many years later at the age of 48 he won the WBA light middleweight title and I think it was the WBC title at 49. So it's arguable he did beat a prime Hopkins.

Age and prime aren’t mutually inclusive! The fact Roy Jones was older than Calzaghe is beside the point!
Why did Calzaghe wait till 2008 to travel to the US for a big fight? I know our passport office was slow back then..but how long was his application delayed?
Shall we look at all the fighters he could have fought?

    • @m9oxo

@@its_rick_james_bich2575 So, why didn't Roy Jones travel to the UK ?? Why didn't Hopkins ? a fight at Cardiff against Calzaghe covered by ESPN & SKY would have been as big a fight (if not bigger) than in the US ....works both ways. Did RJJ even have a passport ??
Truth is (look it up, easy to find quotes & referances on google & TY) Roy Jones was offered the Calzaghe fight when Joe was SMW Champ, but Jones turned it down because he said the money offered for the fight it wasn't worth the risk fighting Calzaghe. Years later when Joe was undisputed & held all the belts, Jones Jr decided the risk was now worth it, for all the belts & obviously the money offered was a lot more as Calzaghe was now a much bigger name in the States. Hopkins was also offered the fight with Calzaghe , but asked for stupid money that no one was going to pay, priced himself out of the fight, wonder why ?? Again in time the money increased so like Jones, Hopkins finally took the risk & like Jones lost to Calzaghe.
As for your last sentence, in boxing ....shall we look at all the fighters every fighter 'should' have fought ! Many obvious & desired fights are never made, for lots of reasons, it's just boxing.

Most overrated fighter of all time for me. Kessler and Lacy were good wins against peak fighters. Eubank was at the end & took the fight with a few days notice. I think he lost to reid. Jones was nearly 40 & had a few bad KO defeats. Hopkins was 43 irrespective he won a world title after the fight he still wasn’t prime & still give Calzaghe an SD. Yeah every fighter gets people who are past it but calzaghes record was massively padded & he was massively protected for me.

All facts though my friend. Eubank even had to drop a weight division to fight ordinary Joe as he was scheduled to box at light heavyweight.

Calzaghe was 36 only four years 😂 going on like 20 years difference

4 years for Jones & 7 years for Hopkins. I’m not debating the age difference (which can still make a difference) but wins against a 40 year old Jones & 43 year old Hopkins doesn’t hold the weight it would beating s 30 year old Jones or a 33 year old Hopkins & it feels like Calzaghe is judged on beating prime Jones & Hopkins. Jones was probably shot in his early 30s & Hopkins lost it a little later at 40 when he lost twice to Jermaine T however wasn’t as shot at 43 as Jones was at 40 (probably due to styles/life style)
