This night lapse of the northern lights on October 10-11, 2024 was also captured using the settings I share in this video: th-cam.com/video/eq4E4q18Mxk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=yjlXPA74fUjI-lgz
I am surprised that DJI does not include some sort of a star lapse type of mode. How would you compare the Action Pro 5 vs the Ace Pro 2 for star lapse videos?
i used the settings recommended for nightlapse but i got 5 mins of black screen. i have a gopro as well and i find it easier to navigate the controls than the action5. only reason i bought the action5 was that i was hoping the images of the nightsky would be less blurry
Thanks! Yes, these settings will translate nicely to the Action 4. You just may not see quite as good of results with the Action 4 as with the Action 5 Pro.
As a backup to my main camera. I've been using my Gopro for the feature photo night lapse on auto for years now. At the end I have a ton of photos at random exposures and most of the exposures end up around 1-3" up to :30. I cannot figure out a good setting for this yet on the Action 5, Does anyone have any advice for setting this up as an easy preset? I always ended up with a few cool unexpected photos. Thanks
Hey, what an amazing video! I'm thinking about getting a new action camera, I'm torn between the GP11 and GP13, and of course the OA5P. Have you ever done underwater with one of these? At first I wanted a camera to take some underwater photos and videos, but that won't be the case all the time! Besides, I'm thinking about one that can serve me later for timelapses of the aurora borealis, which I'll be doing often. Best,Leo
@@GreatDayForAHike Thank you! One more question: I know you have a soft spot for the GoPro, too. When it comes to using the same process (night lapse, photos, edit in Lightroom, edit in Premiere, etc.) which do you prefer as far as using and the final output? GoPro or Osmo?
@dougphi The DJI DNG photos process much faster in Lightroom when editing and exporting vs the GoPro GPR photos, but for the finished product I still find the GoPro photos to have a bit more detail and clarity with celestial objects. It used to be a big difference, but the Action 5 is much better for night lapses than the Action 3 or 4 were.
Yes, you can use these same settings on the Action 4. The Action 5 Pro captures better night lapses than the Action 4 from my observation but these settings will certainly translate to the Action 4. You just may not see as good of results on the 4.
Unfortunately no. The GoPro is still my favorite for night lapses but I do consider the Action 5 Pro much better than prior Osmo Actions for night lapses.
Unfortunately, the dji is not like Gopro .. the interval is to gap 40 or 30 seconds between the shots .. I was surprised when I tried to shoot timelapse on night
Tried these settings twice and my old iphone does better. I don’t know how to access the raw files and edit them. Maybe I am, I can’t tell. I get little improvement with lightcut. The sky is mostly dark, but I see plenty of stars with my eyes. I forgot to raise the iso!
@@rudydoyle i have my gp12 & action 5 too but for taking nightlapses i always choose gp12 having bigger sensor doesn't mean it will automatically have Better details optimization matters too gp12 does better with nightlapses
Over the years of owning each GoPro and each Osmo Action I have found the GoPro cameras to work best for night lapses. More details and clarity in the night sky.

Just straight up to the point, perfect video 👍
You’re welcome and thank you for your feedback!
This video is fantastic!
Thanks for sharing your insights-it's clear you've put a lot of thought into this.
Thanks!
Thanks for video, that was interesting, just started to play with timelapse for day/night
You’re welcome. It’s a lot of fun to play with the time lapse features on this camera.
Thanks, Man I find your videos helpful **** for stars sir.
Thank you.
thanks for doing this, Im probably going to get an Osmo as my upgrade path from the 11 as it just looks much better than the 13
You’re welcome
Very instructive and efficient video, thanks! I wish I had tried to do some of this with the recent geomagnetic storm. Next time I will have a clue.
You’re welcome! Yes, there should be quite a few more geomagnetic storms coming in the next few months.
1:11 looks amazing
Thanks for the video. Helpful
You’re welcome and glad this was helpful.
Hi! What resolution do you get on the images (jpg/raw) when shooting timelapses? The older version of the osmo action produced pretty low-res images.
Thank you. Much appreciated.
You’re welcome!
Hi! How did you accessed the raw photos? I could not find it by dji app or in dji camera? Only available in SD card?
i used the settings recommended for nightlapse but i got 5 mins of black screen. i have a gopro as well and i find it easier to navigate the controls than the action5. only reason i bought the action5 was that i was hoping the images of the nightsky would be less blurry
Beautifully shot!! By any means, could I get a similar output on my action 4, with the same settings?
Thanks! Yes, these settings will translate nicely to the Action 4. You just may not see quite as good of results with the Action 4 as with the Action 5 Pro.
Could you do a side by side night time lapse comparison between the GoPro 13 and the DJI Osmo Action 5 please?🙏🏼
Yes. I will plan to do this.
@@GreatDayForAHike thank you very much!!🙇🏻♂️
@@lohyewcheong Insta360 Pro2 also
@906Roofer I’ll plan to do this as well.

When creating a time-lapse video using RAW files, is GoPro still sharper and more detailed compared to the Osmo Action?
WoW! That’s Brilliantly Awesome! Thank You so much! Have an incredible new week! 🫶🏻❤️✨
ist it possible to just get the images without the video, but in full resolution (40mp, raw), like on the gopro?
Do the DNG files from the OSMO offer much more quality than the JPGs from the Ace Pro when it comes to editing in Lightroom?
Great question. From my perspective they do not appear to add much more quality when editing in Lightroom.

5:49 hold up, this is even better!
Yes, this camera did pretty good.

On GoPro you can do 15s exposure with a 15.1s interval (auto), can't do that with the Action 5 ?
Unfortunately no. The GoPro is still my favorite for night lapses but I do consider the Action 5 Pro much better than prior Osmo Actions for night lapses.
@@GreatDayForAHike Do you see a big difference in noise in RAW long exposure with the same settings between GoPro and Action 5 ?
@Nekzuris Yes, the GoPro has more noise but with that there is also a lot more detail. The DJI has less noise but also less detail.
@@GreatDayForAHike Okay so I guess most of the difference come from a more agressive noise reduction algorithm and not the sensor size.
@Nekzuris Yes, it appears to be that.

Can we turn off WiFi ?
There is not a way to manually turn off WiFi on this camera.
I have both gph11 and an Oa3
the Gph11 has far better abilities in the star shooting areas.
But by day, I use the OA3 mostly.

Well. I think that the insta 360 ace pro did it way better than the osmo. Less noise !
Not even close to hero 13
Yeah GoPro is definitely still king when it comes to night lapses and night lapse features. DJI has come a long way but still not there yet.
GoPro is just Better at taking night laps easy to get best shots even the presets it comes with takes beautifully timelaps/nightlapses
Not really, the bigger sensor on the action makes a big difference. I have gopro 12 and action 4, Action is a much better looking image

I didn’t like the results I got with my Action 1 - Action 4, but the Action 5 Pro seems to be a significant improvement for night lapses.
Hi, is it possibile to select the shutter time in osmo action?
