If one drives in own car one cares about, another hint: painter tape over bumper front/underside (and maybe car sides too) is your friend to protect paint from cone hits.
BTW, nice way to mess with one's mind in cone slalom is to space 'em with different intervals. Getting repetitious interval rhythm at constant speed sometimes gets too easy after many tries. One of cones further, one closer, nice way to throw off rhythm.

A mistake I made at my first autocross was worrying too much about the car and not enough about myself. I forgot to bring any water. The car performed fine but I got heatsick, and had to go home early.

Who read this as "How to drive fast around corners" and was confused for first 30 seconds.

I saw corners too, i thought the cones were just simulating the corners.

This is why Team Oneil is the best "rally" school in the country.

Love your videos. Typically the biggest issue I see people doing is treating the cone too much as the obstacle and not as simply marking out a course. So they look at them and wait until they are past them to initiate the turn. When doing driving instructing, we usually leave out "late apex/early apex" partially because of what you illustrated. You are late apexing, but you are steering early/before the cone. So we concentrate on the language of steering sooner/earlier and don't even say late apex because we don't want the word "late" stuck in their mind. Eyes up, steer early is 90% of the battle for new drivers in rallycross/autocross.

I'd recommend taking it one step further and just saying "wide entry, tight exit". Steering early can still cause early apexing: e.g. in case of a single 90° corner, the turn in for a late apex line is later than a turn in for an early apex line.

"Focus on your breathing... Otherwise you'll go out there for a few minutes and come back a little weird." I think many of us enjoy Wyatt's weirdness. ;)

Good comment on right side cones ... I made that mistake once. Got squeezed at end of a straight opps that might buff out.

    another great video! thanks!
the last point is very important, remember to breath and also keep yourself fit all the time
i notice those professional drivers spent a lot of time doing exercise and keep their body in top condition

I listen to your advices, tried many things you told me/us. Suprisingly some of them were harder than they seemed, and you were right 99% of the time.
Also you always say we should keep training and pushing ourselves, so great motivational speech there as well!
Thank you once more for being such a guy. Passionate and caring. We all appreciate you! Keep doing your best, looking forward for whatever content you put!

I was looking at the American Rally Association's website, to find the most basic, entry-level class a person could enter. It looks like 2wd limited. Is that correct? It seems like there should be a class for near stock vehicles.

What are you using to mark the top center of your wheel? I'm assuming it's just white tape?

    • @Teamoneilrally
      @Teamoneilrally  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yup just white electrical tape. You can get yellow or red if you prefer, we just find that white is easiest to pickup with your peripheral vision in all light conditions.

I just wanna learn how to drive on snow and mud quickly without breaking stuff. Racing is cool, but sometimes driving home/work is at the edge of my limits. Though I was a good driver till i moved out of the city.

How do I initiate a fast corner entry in a WRX without first understeering? I understeer get off gas understeer more, then use gas and AWD finally does a controlled turn.

As long as they can reach the pedals and steering wheel safely, they're good. We've had 14 year olds through the course with no problems.
