OMG, abolutely amazing masterclass, understanding of the music, still so good at explaining. I laughed so many time during watching this :DD And Mr. Clayton Stephenson made a really good job. Very well done.
I absolutely loved this. I watched one of Lang Lang's Master classes in California, at the Weill Hall where he taught 100 children and is was wonderful. Clayton Stephenson has great talent and Lang Lang is amazing. I wish you both all the best :) Love from Anna C.
Yes, Lang Lang gave a Masterclass to 101 children, duets on 50 kwyboard and Lang Lang on his Steinway piano, in a small town with a new symphony hall near where we live. That video is on my Channel Anna C. It was fascinating to watch :) Anna.
Agreed. I ABSOLUTELY loved this as well. I had a big smile on my face the ENTIRE time. Clayton Stephenson also looked like a really good sport. It can't be easy being in front of a large crowd while being critiqued.
Thank you for your very nice comment. If you ask me, Clayton Stephenson will be a great pianist some day. He already is but being so young, my hat goes off to him :) Anna.
Lang Lang is very passionate about his music from his heart and he’s not afraid to share it with all his fans. A genuine fun loving great thinker and a phenomenal pianist!! Brilliant!! ⭐️💥💎🎵🤩
You are an unbeliavable talent, Maestro Stephenson! Your playing is a joy already - but happy to see that you are seeking further instruction from a pianist with such a distinct individual style as Lang Lang. Liszt's music clearly suits you perfectly - I hope that you will keep adding more and more of his pieces to your repertoire! Thank you for your music, Sir!
Great to watch. In this standard of masterclass a virtuoso technique is essential and also an excellent memory. Clayton is a very gifted pianist and able to take on board all Lang Lang's suggestions as to performance. A re-creative performance needs a secure and brilliant technique able to forget about notes and lift the music off the page.
Be kind to Lang Lang he still plays better than all of us. Remember, he’s an artist and each artist has their unique way of expressing themselves also in a second language!!’ This Pianist can play any Liszt and turn around tomorrow and play Rachmaninoff. He be genius😅
I never liked Lang Lang, question of taste, but knowing this piece very well as I do, I must admit that his work with his student here is a work of sheer Genius! Noblesse Oblige! Brilliant comments and touches all the way from Master Lang Lang. Unique.
I discovered you right now. Sorry for my delay, Mr. Stephenson. You are really talented for romantic repertoires. I'm professional reviewer in Italy. You own the rarest gifts such ear-training, subtle touch and expressive, warm phrasing. I'll follow your career by now. Thanks!
I enjoyed this very much. Lang Langs a great teacher. It's interesting that Lang Lang (and most other pianists) want to play the opening very dryly when Liszt's pedal markings say otherwise. It does have to be scary though.
Francis Squire I think it's because the pedal in 19th century was dryer than it is today. I've heard this recommended before to not take the pedalling to stringently.
@ClaytonStephenson: Clayton. a famous Italian Opera House is trying to phone Lang Lang to ask him to sing Madam Butterly's famous part when she is so emotional. How I enjoyed you two, thank you. !! (Holland 2023 )
17:46 I was like bruh he's gonna give a tight slap on the face 2:17 that's creepy, it was like he was almost to about come close and crush with all his might! The masterclass was just amazing!
It's the Louis Vuitton Foundation. Lang Lang gave a number of masterclasses there that day. YOu might like the one he did that with Janice Clarissa as well.
I know that part where the notes D-C#, C#-F#, C-B, B-E, Bb-A in octaves in the bass represent Mephisto stamping with his big feet to create an earthquake in his own depiction of hell, to scare a lot of people. Just my imagination. And most of the grace notes in the Liszt masterpiece represent the "sprites of fire in the inferno", alluding to the Nikolaus Lenau's version of the Goethe's Faust legend. The opening measures, repeated, represent Mephisto trying to do "accordatura" on his violin during this macabre waltz. Aka tuning. Only Liszt's "Robert le Diable, Valse Infernale" and "Scherzo and March" can equally set off this explosive extroversion of diabolic music elements as the First Mephisto Waltz.
TROLL I'm an amateur pianist. I dont think their is a "right way". There is an enjoyable way, shared by like minded people. And there is the way that reflects the opinions of people respected (Maestros, virtuosi, music phds, professors and professional musicians). Lang Lang was able to have a successful career because of that his opinion is highly valued. And hopefully what he thinks and teaches increases the enjoyability of the music or reflects the intentions of the composer.
That which enhances the character of the piece is often the correct one. For instance, Lang Lang and others leave out the pedal in the beginning, which I assume is to make the intro scarier, which is in character.
The best masterclass I ever attended was with Leon Fleisher. One of my buddies performed the first movement of Beethoven's "Les Adieux" Sonata. Fleisher let him play the whole movement, but after that he immediately went back to the first few bars of the piece and they never made it past the first two bars. Fleisher was wanting to hear several different possibilities for approaching that section and he wanted to see if this young guy had the imagination to conceive of more than one-or-two ways to interpret it. At the end, Fleisher said that Schnabel had done the very same thing to him in one of their first lessons.
Hello Clayton, I don't call it lucky because after Iwatched and heard you play in Lang Lang's Masterclass, I knew there was more to you as a 'just a piano player'. You have great talent, believe me and I wish you all the best in your life and your career :) Anna.
Too bad ding -a-lang is unable to improve although he is still working on the first Liberace book - "How to pretend to play the C scale without using real notes.!!
"I need a bit of a movement there" I mean im not sure if its good to impose your own way of feeling "emotion" onto someone else if you dont feel it that way? He loves the hands on approach too ive noticed lol
He should not be teaching master classes. He is just a performer with a decent technique and a lot of hype. There are plenty of master classes on TH-cam that are amazing....
Lang Lang essentially sang the whole piece, God Bless him.
Haha
he might be mephisto
“You’re very good in mathematics... tuh tuh tuh tuh... you know, shapes”
?
My understanding of that is, Lang wanted he gained a little bit more directions and accurate rests.
He's precise, but doesn't have the emotion behind the music?
Lol 😆
He’s Also called: Don Synatesia
I just saw it as I read the response
He lives music with all his heart. No matter what he has gone thru, who he is dealing with, he is becoming one with music. Wish him speedy recovery.

Well stated - 'like' is subjective i suppose all of this is, but lang lang really gets the characterization of liszt - especially don juan - holy moly
Il love this ! It's so gorgeous ! Furthermore, with the tips of Lang Lang, it's just amazing and you play very well !!! 😀
i things he is a great teacher.
Beautiful playing, Clayton. I really enjoyed it. I've subscribed!
10:51 Liszt piano concerto no.1
Toujours dans la bonne humeur dear Lang Lang 😊
17:41 i just keep watching it all over, it is so good!
God bless Liszt! Only he could've conceived such a masterpiece.
such a good masterclass by both.
Young Mr. Stephenson plays beautifully, seems exceptionally skilled physically. Wow!
His comments on this piece are absolutely brilliant. Such a wonderful masterclass from LL.
Love this Masterclass
2:54 Liszt puts the accents on the second beat of every bar in this phrase, not the first beat! Surprised Lang Lang didn't say anything about that.

Do you know what piece that is? I want to hear it.
Brahms, 2nd concerto, 2nd movement. :-)
I don't get the joke. Why is it good for Brahms and not Liszt?
@@m.a.3322 Liszt is very intense, he was a showman, kinda like Lang Lang, sounds much better with more power and intensity.
