  • I'm busy preparing for a big market in August, this video is unplanned, un-edited, and a mix of what I do and use regarding soap making and random conversations to fill the time I wait for oil to melt or cool.
    Want to come and say hi at Kragdag, I will be in the "Snuffelmark" and I Would like to meet you in person.

    It's really nice to see a video done in real time to see exactly how to do things, I haven't ever seen the combination of potassium hydroxide with the sodium hydroxide to combat the hard cracking of the soap. I'm sure Ouma would have appreciated a great many things we have in today's day and age lol

      Thank you so much, I've never before thought to do a real time video, simply because at makes a video very long. But it seems like there is a need for it. Will do one again soon.

      You're welcome, I also especially appreciate the tip about cleaning up afterwards because I was wondering about how to safely handle the lye Covered tools.

    I like the dual-lye idea. I wondered why people used potassium hydroxide for shaving soap. Now it makes sense; you need softer soap to load the shaving brush. Enjoyable and informative video, as always.

    • @saponify6677
      @saponify6677  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can load a shaving brush with solid bar soap but it takes more effort and more wear on the brush. I actually like to make a shaving paste/clay (60% KOH 40% NaOH) these days, I pinch of a tiny bit of soap and press it on the bottom of my shaving bowl, it usually lasts for a few shaves, I like it more because I can clean out my bow whenever I like and I don't expose all of my soap to unnecessary amounts of water.
      Thank you for watching and your kind feedback 😊

      @@saponify6677 Well, I've never made soap yet, but read a whole bunch. I think I'm ready, but watching you do it and talk about it made me feel really comfortable with the process. I would LOVE see more with different scents or ingredients. Anything you do would be cool to watch! And you have a very pleasant way of chatting.

      Hi Nadia. I used 90% Tallow, 10% Coconut oil. (For laundry soap like in this video 1% superfat, you can use this as bathing soap as well, then I increase the superfat to 5%) the duel lye is 90% NaOH and 10% KOH. 🌿⚘

    Hi Ansa, I made such beautiful tallow soap with castor oil and coconut oil..it gelled fully and was still warm to cut 12 hours later as I kept it very warm. It is beautifully white and I am so happy with it except that I often get a sliggt white powder on it. How do I stop this from happening..ND why does it happen? Thanks for your kind help
    Using tallow can I combine with macadamia nut oil and another oil..do you have any recommendation recipes for me to try. I have a lot of tallow, coconut and macadamia nut oil. Thank you

      Hi Nadine. It might be a little soda ash forming, normallybif your soap goes through gell it is a very small amount that sometimes form, I think it's a tallow thing as well , I sometimes don't even bother to steam it off.
      Do you need help formulating a recipe with your oils you have available? th-cam.com/video/MrN1q3Ulf5c/w-d-xo.html

    • @saponify6677

      Hi Belinda I used:
      10% Coconut Oil 90% Tallow
      5% KOH 95% NaOH
      1:2 lye to water ratio.
      It is basically the same recipe as my Tallow video in my Tallow playlist. It's just the duel lye that is new.

    Ansa, would I need a dedicated pot and utensils to make tallow soap?

    • @saponify6677
      @saponify6677  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I wash my pots and utensils with the soap I make. Many people get hung up on Lye. Sodium Hydroxide (lye) is not poisonous, undiluted it is just a very strong base, it is being used in food preparation as an acidity regulator (check the ingredients list on pretzels and crisps)
      The soap police will propably come for me, (that is the same people who will tell you to lick your soap to zap test) but
      My unpopular opinion is as long as you don't use ingredients that are harmful when digested you don't need separate equipment, just clean it well because soap doesn't taste nice 😉
      If you make emulsified creams and butters I would say try to get a dedicated blender, more to keep possible food particles and germs out of your cream than keeping cream out of your food.

      R10 a kg which I think is a bargain.
      I started to make tallow at 10am and ended st 4! I was 😩 exhausted after this.I contacted Maureen who you recommended and will order from her in future.
      I am going to make soap this weekend using the tallow and if successful will order from Maureen.
