I remember buying one of those resistance bands from Title that were made for shadow boxing. Not only does it help with speed but also aids you in properly extending the jab without injuring the elbow joint.
Muscle memory. I’ve seen videos of Olympic sprinters doing similar drills, with a long rope and spring loaded spool. It lengthens the stride also. Your method definitely simplifies the principle.
This is the only video that I've seen so far that claims to improve hand SPEED and actually uses the resistance bands PROPERLY. There's a ton of evidence in strength and conditioning research that supports this concept, using things like boxing, swinging a baseball bat, sprinting or anything else that you're trying to improve speed of movement. Everyone thinks that Resisted movement improves speed but it's just the opposite. You could argue that it improves Force output but definitely not speed/velocity. Thanks for putting this simple but effective video out there! Great advice.
So to get a balance of forced output ( I’m assuming you mean power ) and hand speed can you use the resistance bands both ways? One working on the power of your punch while the other helps you to punch faster? Also, how do you warm up to prevent hypertension injury before you do a drill like this?
@@Muzicboy3 This is a topic that could use a whole body of investigation itself, but I'll do my best to answer here. Definitely do your own research as well though. Organizations like the National Strength & Conditioning Association are great for this type of thing if you want true, scientifically backed information. If you can't stand to read my wordy technical explanation below, here is the answer you're looking for: The resisted Band work would build "Force Output," the assisted band work would build "Velocity" and (F x V) = Power. So, either would probably improve power and yes give you more "powerful" punches. But now here's a much more technical way of looking at it. If you're using a term like "Power" realize that Power = Force x Velocity. That's physics and it works the same for exercise science. Therefore, increasing your ability to generate Force (we usually think of this as "Strength") or ability to achieve higher Velocity (generally think of this as speed), would both theoretically improve power output. I think we need to concentrate on why a punch or strike is actually doing damage though. For instance, the total force of a hard PUSH is far greater than the force of a quick punch with your closed hand. Yet, its the punch that hurts us not the push. But... a quick punch, with no force behind it doesn't hurt either. So why? To get technical for a moment. "Impulse" is really what we're trying to improve in our strikes. In physics, "Impulse" refers to the effect of a force over a period of time. It's the force applied to an object and the duration during which the force is applied. Impulse directly relates to a change in an object's momentum and a quick change in momentum is actually what is causing the damage (or creates the more jarring effect). This is what makes it a key concept when analyzing collisions of any kind. So, in real life examples, think of why an Air bag works, why rolling with a punch works, and why breathing out forcefully when getting punched in the stomach works. It is because it increases the amount of time that the force is acting upon its target, thus reducing the overall "impulse!" So to create damage, we need to create maximal Force, over the shortest amount of impact time as possible. And yes, we can do that by increasing the force we are capable of generating or by having quicker strikes. And, Is that similar to power? Yes... basically. If that put us in the weeds too much I can say this. How are we trying to hurt an opponent? Do we want to do it with quick hand speed and lighter stinging punches? Do we want to do it with more forceful, but typically slower blows? Either could work, so you DO generally want to work on both increasing Force AND Increasing Velocity, which does ultimately increase the "Impulse" of the strike, leading to knockouts and TKO finishes. The concept of impulse can help us understand why the idea of rolling with a punch, a shoulder roll, and timing our breathing with impact, can prevent us from getting finished in a fight. At this point you might wonder "why I didn't just say, Yes, you can possibly use a resistance band either way for increased power and therefore impulse and blah blah blah" And you would be right to wonder that. However, I mainly wanted to point out that its important to understand what it is we're really working on and understand that there are many ways to knock someone out or have damaging punches. I think the question mainly lies in, "where is your personal deficit?" and whatever you feel like is lacking, that's the thing to concentrate on. Then , how can you reduce the Impulse of someone else's strike? Learn to roll with punches, time your breathing and skillfully deflect strikes. And then if you want to go next level, understanding the concept of Impulse can help you understand why some strikes are more likely to produce a knockout than others, even though they may actually hurt less. Seriously just watch any short explanation on how airbags work and it'll do wonders for understanding impact in martial arts too. Boxing gloves work on this same principle by the way. I hope that even if that wasn't the best explanation, it can set you on a path to continue to discover more and separate scientific training from Bulls**** that just sounds good in a training video.
Looks like a type of overspeed training. Body is forced to adapt to the extra speed thats getting generated by the help of the bands. I use overspeed training for legs but have not tried with the arms, should be fun to add in to training!

We were taught by our boxing coach that weight lifting is fine as long as it's 'sport specific'. Building muscle just for the sake of building muscle to 'bulk' up will not only not improve athletic performance but may actually reduce speed, power, and muscle elasticity by limiting range of motion. Why? Because there is no range of motion. That's why they're called static stretches. Dynamic stretching on the other hand involves performing the actual kick while standing but in slow motion against gravity. This builds strength and flexibility in the desired range of motion and also brings into play all the other muscle groups that work with the legs to produce a fast and powerful kick. Ankle weights and resistance bands can be added to increase the resistance. Bill Wallace did both static and dynamic stretches but he did emphasize the dynamic. You're not going to fight on the floor...so why stretch on the floor? You're not going to box on a weight bench...so why do your weight training on one? Bring them into the ring...

If that is the case, you will have to re-train the injured arm to punch with just a slight bend to make sure it doesn’t happen again. This is a common problem among older boxers.
Punching with resistance is also fine but this is about getting your muscles used to higher speed than you can normally generate hence "overspeed" training while using resistance only might make you able to punch faster without resistance but does not apply "FAST" to your muscle memory (because you are slower with resistance). For sure there is a more scientific explanation this is just my experience.
