  • Donation Day! Today we try BenRiach 16, Great King Street from Compass Box, Port Charlotte Valinch, Kilchoman Machir Bay, The GlenDronach Cask Strength and Egan's Irish Whiskey.
    If you want to toast the channel:
    1) Upload your video toast to TH-cam.
    2) Mark it as "unlisted" if you don't want the video to appear in public search results.
    3) Put a link to the video in our comments with the hashtag "#toast".
    Check out the Instagram account @whiskey_marketing_school
    ** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
    Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax-deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
    11:27 - boof
    austinwhiskyvau...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
    Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
    See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
    Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
    Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
    ** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
    Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
    Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
    It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
    ** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
    Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
    The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
    ** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
    There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
    Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
    There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
    Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

    You guys should do a "distillery day" and review the things sent to you by the reps/distilleries. If they send you another the get a whole episode. If they send you one bottle then they have to share with someone else. Could be interesting.

    Mmmmm...always love finding out about a new Irish, but tat Port Charlotte is definitely on my radar now. Also, does anyone else think we need to have Chad do a sizzle reel of keeping the cameras rolling for about 5-10 min after the show stops?

    I agree with your policy to companies, reps, etc- just like any other person donating booze. What is really great about your review is that you don't dump on things you don't like- you give real tasting notes that you may not appreciate, but you 100% recognize that other DO like those notes. Over time, I have been able to calibrate what you are saying to things that I might like based on comments you have made for whiskey that I do and don't like. That's what makes your channel so valuable.
    The whole lack of snobbery attitude makes you do that, and you are 100% ok with people liking whiskey that you don't like- so you try to be very clear of what you taste. Works really, really well.

    If ever you make the trip to Cape Breton to the Glenora Distillery, you can pour your own cask strength bottle of Peated Glen Breton or 23 year old bottle! The peated one is magical, smoke followed by vanilla for days!

    I found you guys after the first Modern Rogue whisk(e)y episode and now i'm following you every day. :)
    I started my whisk(e)y journey with a bottlw of Monkey Shoulder and it blew me away when i started to taste more than alchohol.
    And now i have opened a gifted bottle of Four Roses and next to it sits a bottlw of Balentines.
    Thank you guys for opening my eyes to the world of whisk(e)y. :)

    You can fill your own bottle and seal it in the states the red tape arrives when it comes to purchasing it. Jim Beam figured out a way at their store front in Louisville. They "ship" it from the locked bottling room to the store via secure conveyor belt where you can purchase at the counter.

    Daniel - It is commonly believed that the name Laphroaig is derived from the Norse "breid-vik", meaning broad bay. It seems that the name Laphroaig - the beautiful hollow by the broad bay - has Viking roots, although it could also be considered a Gaelic reference to an old place name.

    • @tdolan500
      @tdolan500 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Lo seems to be a few different interpretations I found this “Lag Bhròdhaig, or the “hollow of broad bay.” “

    • @westieclo
      @westieclo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Terry. I just did a quick google search and grabbed what came back from Laphroaig's own page. Their marketing team probably had a hand in rewriting things a bit anyways.

    • @tdolan500
      @tdolan500 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Lo I suppose the English is the offspring of the Gaelic and the Gaelic is the descendent of the Norse/Viking

    • @Perfect5Recurve
      @Perfect5Recurve 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, Scots and Irish Gaelic are Celtic languages so Old English is closer related to Old Norse as they're both Germanic languages.

    I think you should totally promote the transparency of the reps, and incentivise them being upfront about being a rep.
    Along with donation day, you could do a provided by a rep day, on like Monday or Tuesday or something.
    If you give them a special day, they might be more inclined to do it that way.
    That is assuming that this comes up that often.

    For reference, I don't know about straight from the barrel, but you can fill your own bottle of Knob Creek Single Barrel at the Jim Beam Distillery. So it is doable but I know liquor laws vary from state to state and that may be where the issue lays on whether its legal or not in Texas.

    Writers Tears is absolutely dangerously drinkable and one of my go-tos when having some whiskey with friends. I wonder if aging it longer would address Rex's and Daniel's qualm with i,t as I have often wondered if it can be more complex as well? That being said I still adore it. The GlenDronach sounds very interesting.

    Just looked up “Laphroaig” and the only definition listed on definitions.net was “serving a bottle of Laphroaig whisky. Ex: And when I am hungry, said MacK, bring me the salmons of Argyll smoked over the peat of the Hebrides and a glass of Laphroaig.” It doesn’t really answer the question, but I kind of love it anyway.

    I just found this episode and reading the comments and as someone that has been to the laphroaig distillery 5 times now I find it absurd I can't find a single comment on the true meaning of the name to the distillery. Norse Gaelic English doesn't mean horse balls. It's the name of the loch/lake that they get there water from.

    Laphroiag, a commonly suggested etymology includes the elements "lag" (Gaelic: hollow), "breid" (Norse: broad) and "vik" (Norse: bay), implying an original Gaelic form something like "Lag Bhròdhaig" (the hollow of Broadbay). Sàinte!

    Ok you Magnificent Bastards, I have a small problem with my Sunday tasting group with 3 neighbors. We can't agree on tasting order of a large array of scotches. We had 8 and 16yr laugavulin, 10, 12, 17, 21, 25 year glenfarclaus, balconies single malt, glenlivit nadura, Laphroig triple wood at 1 tasting. Some say youngest to oldest regaurdless of type. Some say light to peated, some say it doesn't matter. What is the better of the ways. These are all very small tastings so we don't over do it over a few hours of shooting the shit. We mix it up with different styles and brands every Sunday, but this one tasting created issues.

    As for "what to do about Brands, Companies, Reps of such and such etc sending and asking for a review"
    Place the Whiskey in the Vault and thank them for their Donation to the Vault to help the cause and Review it, but be honest about it's source, if you wish you can add it into Donation Day videos (i.e. we just got in something from the company that makes ....) -- in the Tech Industry the reviewers sometimes do get those pieces (like a High End Graphics Card) for review from the company I feel this is acceptable as long as the Tribe and those watching know what's up.

      Your mind associates tastes, textures, and smells with things it's familiar with. So although it neither tastes nor physically feels like creme brulee, your mind feels it.

    Wiki said the suggested meaning is "Broad Bay". Bunch of other stuff that other people already specified, so I'm not going to bother. ^_^

      Right now, MGP 1yr old whiskey is somewhere around $1k to $1,500 if you're a distillery sourcing.

    If you guys stay totally objective with rep donations it will be huge! Many whisk(e)y review channels do not. Sometimes I don’t think it’s fair to the reviewer to do this. I have seen videos where I can see the reviewer is torn or is padding their review out of obligation. That just makes me write off the review.

    You could become like the reviewer in Ratatouille. Everybody cowers at the mention of his name. The skinniest food critic to ever walk the earth. He shuts down restaurants with a simple article in a newspaper. Only to find that he loves a peasants dish. Can’t tell I have kids can you.😉
