I'm hoping this might help answer some questions for folk considering retrofitting power to their greenhouse
Hi Eli and Kate, £20 per month really is not all that bad, bare in mind we have had one of the coldest April on record, I reckon my heater uses 1.5 litres of fuel every 2 nights so at 0.75p per litre that works out at 0.75p per night X 30 average = £22.50 per month that is If I paid for it but I don't well, not all of it I have spent £37.50 this year the rest was free from my landlady, So for this year I'm happy, I have tomato plants with tomatoes on looking very nice, I have cucumbers growing and green beans where otherwise I would have nothing, OK, I want to thank all the subscribers that have come over from your channel to mine, THANK YOU, Take care.

I'm agree, just in the pleasure it's given me in being able to get plants going early.

Wow! That's way cheaper than I thought you were going to say for the initial installation. The price of heating it seems really reasonable as well for that extended season and most of all the peace of mind! Super video and fantastically useful I'm sure for all those people looking for this info!
It really was a good price... And the electrician obviously made an impression, our neighbour had him round tonight.
That seems like pretty good value to me not that I’m any expert. Its great that your willing to put this info out as it gives others a guide on what to expect and if it’s worth looking into, It’s something I may look into for next winter as I hope to expand what I can grow in my greenhouse.

Good tip about the sockets too! at first I was thinking why have you gone to all that trouble and then cut up takeaway box to cover plugs? but your right you can’t get the lid shut with anything other than a single standard plug and a lot of things have transformer plugs that are much bigger, a covered socket would have been a waste of money and a real pain. I think socket manufactures are missing a trick as lots of people fit Christmas lights to their houses (not greenhouses🤣) and then they can’t plug into outside sockets 🤷🏻♀️
I may move the sockets in the future as I think having them vertical rather than flat to the surface might be a good thing too, but again means I have to think about space when they have those things plugged in

Looks really good. Im cheap so, oil filled radiator,outdoor socket,heavy duty extention lead. Only temporary for the cold months to be taken out for summer.
practical not cheap
1st: I got my builder to build a concrete platform, 15' x 10' and about a foot high.
2nd : I got the greenhouse delivered and installed.
3rd: I bought terracotta tiles, hand made.
4th : I got the tiler to come and lay tiles ( having spent two weeks pre-sealing each one.)
5th: After tiler, I washed/wiped down the terracotta floor and then gave the floor two coats of more sealant.
Now:
I await the electrician and the plumber to come and install the two services. So far the whole greenhouse looks magnificent.
There was a lot of bother emptying he greenhouse for tile laying, and sealing each tile ( with six surfaces each) was a pain in the ass.
But t was all worth the time and effort.
The electric supply will have to come underground from the supply in the garage, I won't allow any overhead wires. So I will run it under a bed of wood bark which already contains a water pipe.

I use that heater for my mini greenhouse and it is awesome! No other heater that I researched came close!
If you have a big greenhouse then two of them can work
They are awesome aren't they... that one heater works brilliantly, I just ration it's used because its expensive to heat a greenhouse in winter. But I do use it to make it pleasant for me to be jn there too 😂🤣😂🤣
Which thermostat do you use for it? Do you also have something that can record temperature across time over WiFi?
I have a weather station that has a sensor in the greenhouse as well as outdoors and yes it records the data and sends it to the house via wifi
Thanks. Very interesting. Surprising how modest the initial cost was. It's funny how long we can put off projects like that. If you're ever wondering about any DIY stuff, there's a few channels I've found over the years that I'd recommend. 'Gosforth Handyman', 'The Renovation Couple', 'Charlie DIYte' and 'Peter Millard'.
yeah I put off for years and I wish I hadn't.
Have to say, the majority of electricity use in the greenhouse, has been for my computer :D I sit there when I'm blogging and stuff :D

Under $1000 Canadian is quite the deal and I am a diy cheapie. Flaps over the table sockets is a good idea.

Like you, we have the joys of Scottish climate so heating in the greenhouse would probably be a good idea but like you said until I seen this video it was impossible to find any info in this kind of thing! I realised quite quickly that there wasn't a whole heap of info out there on this side of things. I think it's simple down to who the people are that put info on the internet. I've found a real gender divide, so a lot of the info is from a certain perspective with gaps because the emotional or touchy feely type stuff isn't seen as interesting or as important as the how to stuff

up greenhouse #2 so I will be burning X the electricity to heat. it has been in the 30F here.

Really useful Eli, will be heating next year just for the seedlings and early tomato start. I'm lucky as the greenhouse is right next to the garage which already has power so just needs a source through the wall. Having external sockets is also really useful saves tripping over the extension cable! The running costs were a bit higher than I had hoped, although mine is smaller than yours so might be a wee bit cheaper and only for say three months max. Do you think you will rethink the bubble wrap?
I don't think I'll heat the whole greenhouse next year, I may just look at heated propagators in there or make a smaller area to heat. Will see how this season goes and then have a think about what I want to do next year
Great video thanks Eli. I've been running a greenhouse heater for the last week from an external socket, using an external extension lead - it's only about 10ft so not too bad. Will be interested to see how much extra it works out at. What temperature do you have yours set to at night? I've been aiming for around 15 to 20 degrees, more often in the middle of those two. The few tomato plants I have in there seem happy enough.
I'm trying to keep it 15c if I can... Doesn't always work but trying

I would love a greenhouse but unfortunately not allowed due to flats. So I've had no choice to grow everything inside and take them in and out all the time. 🙈

Oh yes 🤣, but where I am in Moray I can start to harden my flowers up as there is no frost for next few weeks. But all my tomatoes etc is still inside. 😊My bedroom looks so bare now. 😭

So the heater was only something we did that one season as an experiment.
It worked brilliantly…. But it’s not really necessary for us so we generally don’t heat the greenhouse and haven’t since.

400£ was an exceptional deal-especially since it included digging the trench. And I agree with you: better to have it done professionally and correct, and not worry about safety issues. Running extension cords for more than a few feet is just asking for trouble, especially outside in the elements.

Eli, we can only get Edison bulbs for oven lights. The rest are all LED lights. At least that’s so in California, where even Amazon refuses to send many items to California, because our laws are more environmentally strict here in LaLa land ... which is a good thing😎.

It was one of those terrifying things for me that I just couldn’t find any info on.
Great idea to have power in the greenhouse - no doubt. But I'm a little worried about the horizontal sockets on your bench. As you said, water is a significant potential problem and having the electric socket holes facing upwards is asking for trouble imo. They absolutely should be installed vertically to minimise water entry. It's your greenhouse but it's wise to be as careful as possible in these circumstances for your personal safety which is paramount. At least you'll be popping fuses/circuit breakers as you will inevitably get water into your sockets in that orientation. This may also render your power unusable while you wait for it to dry out, which could take days. Pls have a rethink and reconsider. I'm a little surprised that your electrician didn't make the same recommendations as me.

I forgot to say thar I'm a huge fan and have been for years since you built your raised beds with plastic water pipe supports. I used the same fittings you recommended to hold the pipes onto the wooden raised bed frame for which I thank you to this day. 👍

So it's been 2 years since that video and about 2 and a half since I got the electricity installed.... that long enough? 😂
Seriously though I'm having a giggle with you because, as I said this is an old video so no longer up to date on things, but it's good to know that my videos are deliberately planned and filmed to tell a story, even the way I am in then is deliberate. So if I talk about something, it's because I think it's something that needs to be highlighted. You'll see the sockets changed position a couple of times since they were initially installed as they just weren't convenient. But I'd say still, condensation is the biggest worry about having electrical sockets in the greenhouse.... you can't always tell it's there.... ( so now you won't sleep 🤣)

interesting video and one that I have done recently, I have a friend who is an electrician who did it for me for free because I do him favours as well so that was good, I had to get 4mm armoured cable 50 metres up the garden lol, so you can imagine how I felt lol, it cost me £160 in total for the cable ,clips, ends, and 1 outdoor double sockets with trip, I wouldn't buy any other sockets other than outdoor ones obviously because a greenhouse will always have water of some kind in there. How much does it cost to run the heater?.
There's actually a video where I talk about the heating cost it's roughly about £40 more than our usual 3 month bill
Theres probably a zlot of regulations over there. Im in the states. Theyll let you do anything yourself. But if you expect to haveit inspected and improved by the town,you are still gonna have to have a electeician stop by to make sureyou dis everything right and correct what you didn't.

In New york City youd have to run iron pipe from the house to the greenhouse 13 inches underground. Then you can snake the wire through the pipe. Iron pipe, for that little run of wire. Lol

I guess recommend is a bit strong. If it was important to you that you use a heater based on temperature then yes, even a cheap thermostat could be useful. But if you are just turning it on for a little while to heat when (perhaps if you are out there and you are cold) then it's maybe an expense you don't need.
I also have a thing I do using smart plugs but I'll do a proper video and show you guys some of this stuff for the folks that are interested.
@@eliandkate Thanks for that, I already use a lot of smart plugs around the house so this would also work. The issue I have is that like you I only have a garden, 4 x raised beds and a 6x6 green house. We also live in a 2 up 2 down terrace house so room in the house is also tight for propagating seeds etc. Heating in the greenhouse at a reasonable cost would therefore help a lot.

You might want to look at bubblewrap to add a tiny bit of insulation and keep the heat in a bit, or even creating bubble wrapped areas to heat.

Yeah I had knew, horrible things. That was the first heater I had. Disgusting. Stank the place out and left soot everywhere. I absolutely wasn't prepared for that 🤣🤣🤣

That size greenhouse you could run a big thick heavy duty extension cord on a trellis. You aren't using That much power in a little greenhouse. Get an outlet installed outside your back door,and plug in an extension cord
