  • In today's video, we look at the issues of insulating the greenhouse following on from my recent video on winter greenhouse preparation. The main problem was how to improve the loss of heat by adding more layers of bubble-wrap insulation, without having to remove all the plants and benches. Take a look at my solution here!

    The clips are good 😊
    Bubble wrap not enough. Use a Mylar camping tarp. Mylar reflects 99 percent of heat back. I would pin it to a pet blanket or waterproof blanket. I would overlap them in the greenhouse because one gap ruins it.
    In China they have greenhouse blanket with straw or insulation. Obviously don’t block your sunlight. Put it on at sundown to keep heat in the greenhouse at night

      To be honest, I can't see myself realistically trying to throw any kind of covering over a greenhouse this tall and of these dimensions on a daily basis. And you're correct - the external bubblewrap lasted until the first storm - the most of the roof covering was blown off - although all the wall coverings remained intact throughout winter so that has to have helped to some degree. I really wish I could go back in time - because instead of a greenhouse I'd have bought a well insulated wooden building (like my 'Hothouse'). Light is easy to provide - really effective insulation to a greenhouse isn't!

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 you don’t actually have to put it on the outside. Although the Chinese greenhouse blankets and Chinese greenhouses function that way.
      I put mine on inside like cute little curtains. Was able to open it like blinds
      It kept a 20 degree difference on average through the night without additional heat
      Walipini is another option but requires earthwork

      Do you cover just the roof or every wall and the gables ends too? I would love to see yours if you have photos you could email? Or maybe even a short video? I would rather completely cover the greenhouse and use more grow lights then continue to pay the ridiculous energy prices we have at present.

      My pleasure. In actual fact, using regular LED strip lights, while not as beneficial as grow-lights, still do provide some of the wave-lengths that plants need, and are a lot cheaper. So if I was you I'd look there first. They might not be 'optimal', but they're a good second choice and will make a difference to your plants.

    I just had a thought, I’ve seen some large polytunnels, I’m not sure about sizing but I wonder if you could get one of the really large polytunnel covers over your greenhouse 🤔 if you could secure it down that could really help keep more heat in and make it nice and toasty. Not sure if this is a very practical idea for your size green house, might be more suitable and easier to do for someone with a smaller one, but just a random thought I was having. Loving watching your videos you have lots of really interesting plants 👍

    • @Grow_Up_Man55

      Thanks - I'm glad you're nejoying them. This year I'm going very radical - I'm going to use foil multilayer insulation to line the inside - which will completely block out the light but I think given the cost of energy it'll be worth it in the long run. There'll be a video coming on it once I've done it!

    • @Aw_tig
      @Aw_tig ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 wow that’s interesting, I hope it works out. Someone really should do an experiment on all these methods, tho to do it right they would need a field with loads greenhouses and a variety of insulation and heating methods, it would be interesting tho. I know we barely get much sun over winter, but I just wonder how blocking out any sun will prevent any sun heat getting in during the day and how plants will react to only having the grow lights. Do your plants go fairly dormant over winter?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Aw_tig The foil is reflective so will I won't lose anywhere near as much light from the grow lights. Growing this way in a box is a well established method and in a country like the UK which is fairly low light for half the year, this method should actually provide more light for more months of the year. The foil will reflect the sun, that's true, but nothing's perfect. My plants generally don't go dormant as they're mostly tropical in origin - and that's the main issue as to why I need to heat so much through the winter. If they all went dormant then I'd be able to simply set the heater just to keep the frost off. I'm really wanting a minimum of 12°C and for the Hothouse plants and minimum of 17°C.

    We live on Long Island and I just purchased a greenhouse last spring. We have decided to go with the double sided bubble wrap for the interior and I was wondering just how many degrees warmer it will become in the winter months I am speaking of January, February, and March, which are the coldest months here on the island, I also have added a small heater with a blower which has caused my electric bills to increase tremendously. Do you see that using bubble wrap has helped with your heating cost? Thank you.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing about any insulation is that it doesn't technically make the interior any warmer - it just slows down the exchange of heat/cold with the exterior. So for instance, I heat my greenhouse to 12°C - and the bubblewrap then slows down the loss of that heat to the outside which is far lower in temperature through winter. In my Hothouse I do the same thing - this time to 18°C - but as the Hothouse has better/more insulation, that rate of heat loss is much slower than in the greenhouse. Without the bubblewrap the cost of heating the greenhouse would undoubtedly increase by a large margin - but then I could improve things by adding more bubblewrap or another, more efficient type of insulation, thus reducing the rate of heat loss, resulting in the heater switching on at less frequent intervals. I hope that helps.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55

      Nowhere near enough. I use grow lights. If I had to do it all over again, I'd focus on a greenhouse with as much insulation as possible - all polycarbonate instead of glass, for example. Lighting is relatively easy to solve whereas paying for heating in a country like the UK is a continual drain on finances.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I see what you mean Edward - but to make a direct comparison you'd need the external conditions - i.e. the temperatures, pressure, wind speed etc.... - to be identical when testing with and without the external bubble-wrap. In other words - I'd need a lab! 🤣 On the plus side it seems intuitive to me that it's got to have at least 'some' benefit to not having any at all. The more layers the better!

      I can't say it's something I've ever seriously considered to be honest. In the old days here on the big estates it was the job of young boys to keep the boiler fed with fuel 24 hours a day - I don't think I could get away with that now...🤣 Until someone comes up with a more efficient way of harnessing solar or wind power on a scale as small as a greenhouse, I'm yet to come across any method of heating that's cheaper or as clean as using a fan heater running on electricity. Although I'm still very much open to suggestions.

      Ok, well...it's practically impossible to make a direct comparison to previous years. Electricity prices change, and the weather each winter can be very different year on year. Additionally - I frequently change the temperatures depending on how the plants are looking and how low I think I can get away with. I work on the principal that 'any' amount of insulation extra to what you had previously HAS to be better - it's hardly going to make things worse. In terms of durability though...the sides and the gable ends all held firm throughout winter and summer - right up to the present. I'll just leave that in place. The roof though...that was a disaster. After the 4th storm of the winter I gave up and took what was left down from the roof. So overall - it was a semi-success! I haven't, based on the fact that I have several grow-lights. In fact, if I could do it all over again, I would have a well insulated building with no windows whatsoever, if it meant I could save money on heating the place. Grow-lights can always be acquired and last for years - whereas insulating a building to the temperatures I need is always going to be costly - especially as a greenhouse isn't designed for heat retention. This year - once I'm recovered from my recent surgery, I'm blocking out the light completely. If I find there is insufficient light I'll simply buy more grow-lights.
