    The local independent game store in my town was the ONLY place to by Japanese exclusive games as a kid. It was awesome to get the opportunity to buy games you saw in magazines which weren’t available in the normal stores. This was waaaay before the internet. Sadly the store closed but I still have games with their store name metallic stickers on the cover!

    Independent gaming stores are few and far between. With work I spend a lot of time in central Newcastle and north London. The only two I've found within walking distance of work are N1 Games in London which has an amazing collection of both retro games and consoles but their prices are astronomical. There's a Cex and a pawn shop just around the corner from it and they charge about 25-50% above the others prices, I can't see how they can afford to stay open. In Newcastle there's a tiny shop in the Grainger Market which specialises in retro stuff, kinda pre ps3/360 and his prices are good just I don't collect anything from that period so not much use to me personally. Other than that in Newcastle I guess we're quite lucky as we still have 2 Cex and a proper Game in the city centre along with a cash converters.

    Gamestation was mine inside blockbuster, oh how I loved spending so much time in there searching for PS2 games, I think I sold them my snes and about 20 games for a great price, although today it would be worth an absolute fortune.
    The good thing about CEX is the prices are the same throughout, they don't hide what they'll give you trade and credit. Whereas the likes of Cash Gen you haven't a clue what you'll get, and store to store prices are different. I'm not going to lump stuff down town to CG just to be offered a rubbish price. Game could capitalize on how CEX operate with their transparency and their range of choice.

    Honestly I prefered gamestation myself, there was one at the highstreet near my home before they went bump and cex took over the store. That particular cex is one of the reason I rarely go to cex anymore. Saying that, there are 3 Game's near me, one in a house of fraser, one in a sports direct and one independant, I do like the space they have in the house of fraser but honsetly if they did more pre owned i'd be in there mor often. Like you say, the 3 for 2 is a banger, the major problem though is compertition with the likes of amazon, why pay £18 in cex or £20 in game for cyberpunk on ps4 when you can get it to your door from amazon for £15. the deals and 3 for 2 are going to be its saving grace, if only they would have more stock.

    • @TVMReviews
      @TVMReviews  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the issue with retail stores selling new. Amazon is so good for prices, they have to focus more on things like pre owned and 3 for 2 if they want to compete. I've never understood having 2/3 stores in close proximity either. The amount of that I see with GAME is confusing

    • @Voidsleet
      @Voidsleet ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TVMReviews I can understand new console's, for me personally with the cost of them i'd rather go get them from store, but for games, i'll just go cheapest option compaired to amazon. i have found some of the time cex is cheaper but its very common for it to be withing £1 difference of new on amazon. Game though, sure theres some games that are around the same as amazon but the 3 for 2 does blows it out the water let alone the rewards card, i have the standard card and i have £7 usable credit on it at the moment

If game went down the same way as cex it would give people a selection or a choice of the two shops to go to. I'd be up for that idea. • @pslee1983

  • @grizzl360
    @grizzl360 ปีที่แล้ว

    as someone who has worked for GAME, this couldn't be more wrong. Their core profit is on pre-owned goods. Moreover than anything sold as "mint". As you say, there is far more margin in preowned and the sales staff are actively encouraged to sell preowned at all times.
    The difference is that GAME have direct partnerships with publishers to push their new titles to the forefront, the publishers pay for space in stores for this, making GAME more of and advertising company than a gaming retailer.
    That publisher money is drying up, so instead GAME are selling the space fltp toy companies, this is why you are seeing lego and Hasbro getting highlight space.
    The preowned is always there and it is what has propped up the company through thick and thin though. Without it, GAME would not exist.
    As for retro, they have tried it many times before and it NEVER works for a company as big as them. The pricing is wild West territory and the inventory is too patchy to be seen as a reliable investment. You need that reliability to run a profitable chain.

    We have a local independent called Gamescene here in Bristol, there were 3 stores I think one has shut or is shutting soon unfortunately.
    Gamestation was always my favourite of the chains growing up, way better than GAME.
    I'm a PS3 collector and GAME don't even sell that generation anymore.

      @TVMReviews I'm in the essex/Hertfordshire cluster and 3 of our stores have now closed in the space of 6 months, we were given the news Wednesday morning out of the blue that we were closing Sunday for good and it's not even the shopping centres choice it's a company decision.

    • @TVMReviews
      @TVMReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I actually cut that part out of the video. I mentioned supermarkets as an option but for me, going to browse games or pick up a new game, is far more enjoyable in a video game store environment. Definitely an option for sure, but if GAME could just stock new releases and then offer a huge pre owned and retro section, that would be the best of both worlds

    As someone who worked for Game, a long time ago. I swear they won't do retro because for every older system they do the same thing. PS4 is a prime example as they slash the prices (3 for 2) to make way for new systems. However, this time could well be the last dance for Game as digital sale are on the up and less people are buying physical copies. After the PS5 and Series X, I bet there won't be disc drives. Then Game's business model is dead in the water and CEX is too well established in the retro market for them to fail, as they've spent years doing it.
    Also, Game's trade in values are laughable compared to CEX. You've proved that in your own videos.
    Also side note, if you've used Game's website in the last few years. you will quickly know that it doesn't have the capability for them to even get in to the retro market because it is awful. It's pain to find stuff on there and they charge way to much in postage.
