  • Woman Bought $13 Diamond Ring At Flea Market That Sold For Over $800K At Auction
    About 30 years ago, a woman found a huge ring while visiting a flea market in London. She picked it up and assumed it was a costume ring, so she bought it. And it never left her finger for all the years that followed. Then, one day, she had it appraised. She never could have imagined just how much that ring was going to alter her life forever.

    You do an excellent job of taking a 1-minute story and stretching it to 6x it's natural length. I especially liked the emotional turmoil she went through deciding which appraiser to take it to. And again, when she speculated to herself what the ring could possibly be worth was aslso very compelling.

      Sorry to burst your bubble, there are many aspects that determine the value of a diamond. It is evaluated by color, cut, clarity, and carat. Unfortunately with old diamonds big does not mean better. Unless that are deemed Golconda with IIA grading.

    $13.00 is about all a diamond is worth. They only cost so much because the system and consumer drive the prices.

      De beers are the problem they determine the valuation system or they did !

    • @leeluv96
      @leeluv96 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@cherrycochrane1311 , awww but aren't we to quick to point fingers and a bit simplistic in our blame? We the consumer play a part as well as the system. If WE stop seeing value in the product enough to spend lavishly, then value would assuredly adjust. This goes for all things that do not maintain life like air, water, food, healing, and shelter.

    • @leeluv96
      @leeluv96 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Paul W , I know exactly what I'm talking about. Basic Economics tells the reader that products, in this case diamonds, but really any product's value is set by the manufacturer cost to produce then by the retailer's cost to sell plus profit goals. INITIALLY, after that they manufacturer and retailer watch the market to see what the CONSUMER will do. If the CONSUMER agrees with the retailer that the product is worth what it's being sold for then the purchasing demand will drive the prices. Supply and demand is the most elementary basis of economics. Now we could get all into Macro vs Micro Economics but I've already bored you enough. In short the prices of things over and above cost is only driven by the consumer alone. The moment we don't buy, these items turn up in the dollar stores, Big lots, TJ Max, Marshalls, etc... because they've been discounted at a fraction of the INITIAL price due to lack of demand. The consumer could control all pricing if we stop agreeing with the value of products. The power is and has always been with "The People". It's the retailer and merchant's jobs to make you forget that and yield to what they say the value of a product is. Diamonds are not worth much. Sure they are essential in running machinery but other than that it's just a rock regardless of the size, brilliance, or cut. It doesn't give or sustain life in anyway. It does not enhance innovation, or education. So it has many uses but minimal value. De Beers said It himself.

    I have had (what I think to be) costume jewelry for many years. I have been waiting for the gold to change colors. One pink diamond set was made in 1928. One day, I hope to find someone to do appraisal on my antique jewelry. I love shopping at the goodies (which is like a flea market). I'm gonna be shell shocked if I have been sitting on a windfall of money unaware.

Actually its made of tri-colored gold. i sold it for 2 thousand dollars

      It was probably set in either white gold or platinum, I highly doubt a jeweler would have set such a large diamond into a sterling silver mounting when the ring was first made, that's pretty much regarded as a cardinal sin in the jewelry industry to set a very valuable and precious gemstone into a silver mounting as 0.925 silver is very soft and more susceptible to wear and tear and at a faster rate. The person who said silver is stronger than gold is wrong when it comes to jewelry metals, sterling silver is MUCH softer than any gold alloy (10k, 14k, 18k). And any reputable goldsmith or jeweler will always set the more valuable gemstones in gold or platinum rather than silver. A lot of people like to call white gold "silver" because they either don't know that it exists or don't want to bother explaining it.

    • @Roholi
      @Roholi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Most diamonds in the 1800s and before were set in silver. White gold hadn’t been invented until 1912 and platinum was first used in jewelry around 1890. The older royal jewelry in Europe, including Marie Antoinette’s famous jewels, all were created with silver.

    I can believe it...I was offered 150,000. for my engagement ring. It was an 'old world ' cut diamond. Older stones are what designers want. New cut diamonds are cut to fit massmarket Settings... Old cuts are for those one of a kind type ring. Set in white gold. That had to be determined by acid testing as the shank had been cut off taking all halmarks with it. I enjoyed telling my ex how much I was greatful his Grandfather's good taste in rings.

    I bought a ring at a little thrift store on campus. It had one large diamond at two medium diamonds on it. I think I only paid $2 for it and I found out that it was worth a lot of money. That same day at the same store they had a bunch of bracelets there and necklaces that looked very dirty I bought those also took them home and clean them up and they were real gold and real silver.
    And y'all do take an hour and a half to tell a 10-minute story. You really need to work on that.

    She got ripped off if she sold it for 800k. Also what is a “1 color grade?” You mean “i” color? If so, someone got a good deal at 800k.

      I know. There's no 1 color grade from GIA or even the lesser grading houses. DEF.... GHI... JKL... etc. Rarely will you see a nice diamond below J in color. D is the best.

      K and L colors are actually starting to gain some popularity in ideal cuts in RB. They typically face up about two grades higher or more.

      Diamonds are graded worldwide by a Lettered system for color starting with D .... did the announcer mistake an I for a one? There is NO color grade “ one “ i am a jeweller and know this

      @@jeffreybodkin1777 True, until you get to the fancy colors. You have FLY, FY, FIY, and FVY. Also you have TLBs (Top Light Browns), top light silvers, etc. I am not sure what he meant by "1" lol.. either he meant D color (1st color on the grading scale) or I color (mistaken for numerical 1). That could be a big difference in price depending on which one..

      @@jeffreybodkin1777 Europeans usually grade them like this: River, Top Wesselton Wesselton, Top Crystal, Crystal etc instead of letters.

    minutes long and it would have been more enjoyable.
