- While the opioid epidemic rages on, Dr. Sharon Levy is enraged for a different reason: we have the means to treat addiction, but we are not prescribing it. A combination of stigma and unfortunate regulations have made the safe and effective medication inaccessible to all but the few who live in certain cities. Her work with pediatricians' offices, of all places, demonstrates that thousands of lives could be improved in weeks--if we'd only have the courage to prescribe what works. Sharon Levy is a pediatrician that has evaluated and treated hundreds of teens with substance use disorders over the past two decades. She also works to support her colleagues in primary care to more competently identify and address adolescent substance use. We had a nurse from Ohio here in England,training in addiction medicine and rehabilitation etc. I was completely shocked when she told me there is no access to opiate replacement services. People have to travel upto 600 miles for help.Every single town here in England has this service available and it’s completely free at the point of use,you don’t even pay for prescriptions. Get it together America,you are the richest country on the planet,you have a catastrophic health emergency and treatment should be a universal human right and not for profit

We aren't treating addiction because it's not profitable. When relapse is a part of recovery, it makes recovery a very lucrative business.

Why do people not know about the medication clonidine? It takes away about 80% of the withdrawal. I cold turkeyed from a relatively high dose of morphine I'd been prescribed using clonidine, as well as paracetamol and ibuprofen. You know you're in withdrawal but it is bareable. I was tapering off which was a slow dripping torture week after week, month after month. I couldn't do it anymore it was making me so, so ill that I couldn't take basic care of myself. I lost everything during the taper because I couldn't function. Lost my partner, the house I was living in and loads of other stuff. Found out about clonidine from researching online. Couldn't get it prescribed as the doctor was unfamiliar with it. Had to get it from a reputable online pharmacy. Without it I'd never have been able to cold turkey. It's a miracle drug. I had been tapering for 6 months and was looking at a further 6 months or more. Couldn't do it. Then I found clonidine and was free from opiate medication in just two weeks. Look into it. If you go ahead with clonidine make sure you do your research thoroughly for doses etc as you need to increase the dose as you head into the peak of withdrawal which is usually days 3-5. Dont take it for more than 2 weeks or you'll have to taper off clonidine as if you just stop taking it your heart can be affected as clonidine is a blood pressure medication. It does have some side effects like dry mouth and daytime sleepiness. It stops the restlessness and agitation, stops the sweating and nausea, stops the restless painful legs, calms the anxiety very slightly but honestly only slightly. I luckily had a prescribed benzo to help the anxiety. Clonidine doesn't help with insomnia but over the counter sleep aids that contain drowsy antihistamine can help with that, although the drowsy antihistamine can exacerbate the restless leg syndrome which can be a nightmare. Trazodone is good as a short term sleep aid. You might need medication to help diarrhea. Make sure it doesn't interact with any other meds you take. You can do this guys!!
In my opinion cold turkey is the most effective way and I wld recommend weed as a alternative to any prescribed drug to help with withdrawals it definitely was a life saver for me in that respect definitely eased the withdrawals and helped me sleep when sleep was impossible!
@@jwelch1027 I used cannabis whilst dropping the dose each week and it honestly barely helped anything at all. It did help a bit but I was suffering so, so badly and that was just from dropping the dose slightly. Using clonidine I beat it totally cold turkey. I honestly can't believe I'm free it felt like it was never going to happen. I'm suffering from post acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS) until my opioid receptors repopulate which can take some time so I have extremely elevated levels of anxiety (I already have an anxiety disorder) but I'm just pushing through it knowing it will improve with time as my brain balances out. Good luck to whoever is reading this and struggling with opiate addiction. You CAN do this. It DOES get better even though it feels never ending. Fight!
I found Suboxone to be a God send, it got me through with no withdrawals & I've been clean for almost 10 yrs. There is no reason to suffer through the withdrawals that makes u feel like death is knocking, get help for yourself & ur family.

Suboxone gets a bad wrap, and it's because most doctors, as per usual, just write a prescription and send you on your way. If managed properly, you shouldn't have to be on the Suboxone program for more than six months. Now, that's not without its exceptions; some people will need to be on it for much longer, some people forever.
That being said, a lot of Doctors don't want to deal with all that comes with treating an addict, even though they play a huge part in this mess. And, of course, the pharmaceutical companies want _outrageous_ amounts of money for this medicine. A months worth for me costs almost $1,000.
Seeking appropriate treatment for addiction is almost impossible. We need more people like this woman.
Look it up dummy, subs are just another additive opioid, your just trading one habit for another. I know people who have been stuck in those places since they opened their doors, and regret it heavily.

blank anonymous it sounds like OP would know, seeing as she mentioned how much they cost for her. You obviously know nothing about addiction. Buprenoephine, while still an opioid, is a partial-agonist. It does not fully saturate the mu receptors, causing the patient to not feel sick but also not “high”. When paired with other forms of recovery (counseling, meetings, healthy lifestyle, etc), Buprenorphine is one of the most, if not the most effective ways to stay off of drugs. Accidental overdoses are the leading cause of death in the US for people under 50. Getting on Suboxone, or even methadone, is a much better alternative to death. More and more medical professionals are beginning to understand that Buprenorphine can and should be used (in some cases) long term. When the patient is ready, their doctor can help them slowly (very slowly) wean down and eventually off of it.

Methadone treatment works. I spent the first 20 years of my adulthood in active opiate addiction. After getting on methadone five years ago, my life completely changed for the better. The seemingly endless cycle of relapsing, abuse, and withdrawal finally stopped, and my life is completely normal now. Medication Assisted Treatment works.
I found that after being on a higher dose for over 10 years, it really affected my ability to think and feel. I didn't even notice until after I quit methadone on xmas.
No one ever talks about 12 step programs. Are you serious? Suboxone and AA (REALLY DOING THE STEPWORK, connecting with others, and a higher power & looking to help others has changed my life and I've been sober now for 7 years off meth, 4 off alcohol and 4 off opiates
This talk was about medical addiction treatment. Talks about 12 step programs abound. They are a support group which is entirely different to medical treatment.
Trading one drug for another is a terrible way to treat addiction.
Took 2 weeks off, weened off subs, then by day 4-8 was bad at nights, at day 10-14 mostly psychological.

Me and a friend of mine got addicted to pain pills over 10 years ago. We both just started taking suboxone this year. It is a lifesaver. I stayed addicted to pills and he went to meth for 3 years. He is even being treated with suboxone from a meth addiction. He traded one addiction for the other. What is really scary was hearing him say it was harder coming off opiods than 3 years of meth. Opiod addiction is nothing to play with. But 10+ years ago we were in our early 20's and didnt know what we were experimenting with. You tell yourself hey grandma gets a script of pain pills it can't be that bad. It can't be a real drug.... Nope dead wrong. And grandma has no idea how addicted she really is either because she never had to go without...

Chronic Pain trumps opioid addiction. The addict does not need the opioids. The chronic pain sufferers suffer when they are prevented from their necessary opioids.
REMEMBER: Even if a Chronic pain sufferer is considered an addict, if they suffer chronic pain, taking away any narcotic pain will leave that person suffering still. Doctors ARE treating chronic pain sufferers as though they are addicts. The government is treating Chronic pain sufferers as addicts plus push doctors to deny them relief.
Amen. Walgreens yelled at me and refused to refill my oxy IR and ER. We had to go in and he then insisted on knowing WHY I needed them.

They have the technology and medications to stop all adverse withdrawal symptoms and it's called NSS-2 The Bridge Device produces an intermittent signal stimulating the peripheral branches of cranial nerves V, VII, IX, and X, and the peripheral branches of the greater and lesser occipital nerves. This affects the limbic system and also blocks ascending/descending signals of the spinal cord resulting in a reduction in opioid withdrawal symptoms. I have been unable to find this treatment in Ottawa Canada.

That sounds like an unnecessarily risky and invasive treatment, particularly considering that there are is an effective and non-invasive medication (Suboxone) available that can safely be used long term.

I'm in the U.K and it takes you 5 weeks from when you walk through the door at the treatment center to starting your treatment. (SHOCKING) it also goes on your medical records so even if you go to the doctors for a normal illness the doctors are quick to judge you. The U.K is the worse place in Europe to fight addiction and get help. We are even behind some parts of Africa for this.

Methodone saved my life and many of my family members we wouldn’t have a future without it. I got on pain pills after a horrible accident and my life has never been the same. I was close to death when a last ditch effort trying medicated treatment helped me get my life back

I’m not saying it’s the end all be all and just like anything it can be abused but if taken properly and used in the manner it was intended for it can bring much needed stability into a drug á eaddicts life. Not to mention your able to get well without subjecting yourself to using street opiates that can take your life in a moments notice. I’ve lost to many friends to not understand how beneficial medicated treatment can be. Literally been sober from my opiates of choice for 6 years and completely off methadone for 3 if it wasn’t for this medication I would be another statistic.. mxxxdz
Unless u can pay a fortune doctors aren't willing to help. I'm going on 20 years I've tapered down to about 15mg of methadone a day. I can't get past that last little bit. But I cannot afford treatment.

My Dr said to me the last visit "you shouldnt go thru detox" Ive been addicted to prescription opiates for over 20yrs. I was on 200mg of morphine down to 40mg,not to mention after a month off pills i couldnt make my own serotonin,dopamine, endorphins, so i felt unbearable i couldnt take it. Is my Dr trying to convince himself or me.

Addiction is treatable and yes... preventable too. The faster help can reach those who are needed, the lesser the damage will be and the easier for docs to manage I think.

She said that there were three medications to treat opiod addiction. I am assuming she is thinking naltrexone as the third, but I don't feel like that she ever be used for opiod addiction, at least not if you have withdrawals. If you do the only two that will work is buprenorphine and methadone (by far way better than buprenorphine, but some people can't handle taking it because it can still give you that feeling of pleasure that opiods give). If you have pain however, methadone is imo the only viable option.

We have successfully detoxed patients off opioid drugs for over 20 years with nearly 100% success rate. t is very important to understand the difference between addiction and dependence. If dependence is treated early, a large number of issues caused by addiction or brain function imbalances can be avoided.

@@tec61 you can wean off. Or you can use suboxone or methadone for a few days-- only a few days -- and you can avoid acute withdrawal symptoms that way.
Maybe I’m naive since I’m not and never have been opioid dependent, but why is that an issue at all? It’s literally just taking a pill every day. Aside from the very minor inconvenience of having to go fill a prescription once a month, who cares? No different from countless other chronic conditions where a single pill enables one to lead an otherwise perfectly normal life.
All do my sons D.C. say "Brain Edema" the main culprit was his addiction to Opioids.

try sleeping without coming off a opioid habit that lasted a few decades. you won't sleep at all for weeks and you won't sleep comfortably for months. you will beg for sleeping pills. it's different for different people though. some have no issues sleeping after about a week of withdrawal and others can't sleep 6 months later.

I’ve finally decided to try gabapentin to help drop my methadone dose the rest of the way, I’m on hour 30 and feeling ok. I have used gabapentin twice. 300mg when I start to feel jittery. I just wish I had a guide to know me know how to taper down when, what medication and how much.

I have 45 verifiable years of Opioid addiction. My body no longer makes Endorphins. The natural morphine-like substance made by the human body. I HAVE to take a substitute or I will feel terrible.

After using opioids for 10 yrs or more a lifetime of methadone or Suboxone is the only choice for most people because your brain chemistry is forever changed.
I have been trying to detox off my morphine after 25 yrs & i noticed the same A month off it & i couldnt do anything to make endorphins,dopamine,ect I just didnt want to live anymore I tried,exercise,L-Theanine, Dopa Mucuriens,Same, Large doses of vit c & b,even Haritaki, Meditation if i could even relax from the huge amount of anxiety my body was bombarded with.I snapped & i'm back on 20mg but not everyday just enough to take a break so i can breath & enjoy a day here & there.
Post acute withdrawal lasts 18-24 months. Have you ever been able to abstain that long or have medical testing that proves you can't make endorphins or do you just assume that's the case since you feel horrible for months aftwr?
I am trying to get off a prescription opioid I've been taking for years due to chronic pain. I'm completely dependent on it and am researching proper ways of getting off it. Also I have realized it's not just a dependency but a full blown addiction. It's SO DIFFICULT to know what route to take because EVERYONE seems to have different opinions and it feels like the more research I do the more unsure I know what to do. I have an appointment this week to meet with a recovery clinic that offers Methadone and Suboxone as medical treatment along with also therapy if some sort. I'm going to the appointment and getting as much info as possible/success stories, percentages of the people who stay clean..what is like to come off those meds and if I can choose my own plan ( if I decide to take Suboxone, I do NOT want to be on it long term and would want to use it as a tool to get me off my opioids but want to taper off the Suboxone as soon as possible) does anyone reading this have any personal experiences or know if someone who used this treatment method? So scared to move forward not knowing if I will regret it later. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply
If you are taking the prescription opioid for chronic pain, exactly how will you deal with the pain once you have stopped the prescription opioid? In addition, what makes you think that you are "addicted" to the opioid as opposed to just being "physically dependent" on it? Only 4-5 people out of 1,000 will become addicted to opioids, and that addiction is triggered immediately after they take their first opioid pain medication. The other 995 people (out of 1,000) can not become addicted to opioids no matter the amount taken, or the length of time on the medication. If you take your prescription opioid pain medication and it alleviates your pain, but does not make you "high", then you are not addicted to the medication.

Only take one or two Suboxones at the beginning for the worst of the pain. Then bite the bullet. No one gets out painless. And that's just the truth of it

Methadone is the most effective and truly time tested treatment for opiate addiction. This is without question. Why only a few prescribers ? Because addicts are obnoxious, manipulative, threatening, and it takes special folks to treat them. More power to you. Maintain your energy and enthusiasm.

me Thanks for asking. She went back to rehab and is out sober I pray forever. I did find an Ibogaine trestment place in Mexico. Hope it's never needed but I suspect it might have benefits for even non-addicts though I havent looked into it.

K Danagger suboxone is great to get a user through withdrawal . After 14 days the patient needs to start weaning off of the suboxone . If you don’t then getting off of the subs will be just as hard if not harder than oxycodone . It’s much easier if one weans off after 14 days .
marijuana has been shown to be effective in treating most of the withdrawal symptoms associated with opioids...………………………...nausea and vomiting, stomach cramps, muscle aches and high blood pressure...………………..and if you end up addicted to marijuana , there would be no physical withdrawal symptoms or physical addiction

joe momma none of these people have any idea what they are talking about. While marijuana might help with certain aspects of withdrawal, it definitely does not effectively treat it. Suboxone does. If may seem difficult to get off of because of its long half life. All maintenance drugs have long half lives, otherwise they would not be effective. The majority of doctors do not know how slowly and drawn out the taper process has to be. When it is done correctly however, you can get off of Suboxone relatively pain free.

People are committing Suicide more than ever now. I hope and Pray that you will post me back. Who has 50.000 just to go into a rehab for 30 days? It takes much longer than 30 days. Our Government just wants the easy way out. They want to have all the addicts commit Suicide then they can never use the Narcotics again. The sad part is there is nothing else made that work like real Narcotics. The problem is this. Because our younger Generation in the 2000's got hooked and abused them, It has now hurt the earlier Generation that was fine with them. I can't believe a young Generation can come along and destroy the Generation before it by abusing our pain medication. And you are so right Dr. Levy. No one was to help addicts off of pain meds. All because they are more focused on money than helping the people that are hooked. Thank you so much for speaking the truth.

And you capitalized on Generation. So I know it at least sub consciously worrisome for you and what they did worked played the hand ! Ive never been so low in my life. 19 yrs on methadone 120mg. I need so much more than 120mg now. It isnt working anymore. I dont think ill ever be free ..and i have no ins.

But don’t you get tired of having to rely on something to make it through the day. I was on subs for over 5 years and got off a couple months ago. Never looking back.

The other drug she's taking is Buprenorphine. Its not as effective a methadone. Probably the reason its easier to find a Dr. to prescribe it. A methadone clinic requires a Daily visit..which is a not convient. especially if U dont own transportation
Go do Ayahuasca if u an addict. Amazing results in 1 week. People walking away from addiction on their own with no feelings of wanting the drug they are dependent on.

Smoke the mirroR cold turkey. That’s what I had to do. It’s hard, it’s painful, and it takes everything you have inside of you to get over that hump. One month and you feel better.
Replacement therapy with Suboxone. Methadone is also effective (and cheaper) but it’s less safe as the lethal dose is much closer to the therapeutic dose.
There's no medication for addiction
Suboxone is good to detox over 7 days. Any longer, you're just going to have to withdrawal off of suboxone.

Suboxone is incredibly strong so you could cut that tablet up and use it for days. You only need like 1/4 mg per day maybe even every other day. Spread it out as thin as you can ask taper yourself off. You will be able to remain comfortable during your detox without getting hooked on the suboxone.
Ppl don’t understand that you only need minuscule amount of it for it to be effective. It’s like 7000x stronger than morphine.

@@kartzzy6101 subs will stop w/d from fentanyl but you have to time it just right. If you take it too early you’ll put yourself into precipitated withdrawals, if you wait too long you may need to take more to feel comfortable. It all depends on tolerance level

I agree. I garentee she was one of the many Drs that believed Pfizer sales representatives when they claimed 93% of patients prescribed oxycontin would not become addicted. When we all know 100% will be physically addicted. Instead of doing there own research they blindly prescribed countless prescriptions. I guess the kickbacks offered from the pharmaceutical representative was so enticing it made it very easy to overlook the obvious moral conundrum any Dr might have felt. Since Drs are supposed to help people it's like an unwritten oath. Money and greed took over and has a big part in this epidemic. Big pharma should not be allowed to offer incentives and kickbacks for prescribing there meds. This causes corruption, and some Drs will push the med that gives them a check instead of what they think that particular patient needs. Because Drs struggle and don't earn good money without the kickbacks 🤦🏻♂️. All greed is to blame but now it's a problem cause a couple judges and politicians kids died. Now it's a problem right. They thought it only affect poverty like crack but boy were they wrong

It all depends on a doctor. Some will prescribe you opioids or benzos for as long as you need them, some will say no. It's just my experience.

Since psychadelics have been proven to help with addiction, many other things. It's non addictive the more you use it just stops working. Oregonn mental health can prescribe. All alternative medsication to help people stop precribed medication were made illegal . A prescribed medicine gave me this horrrible dystonia. Took away my functional quality of life and now need deep brain surgery.. Pills are dnagerous period I prefer alternative medication. Thc is the same, stops tremors, help keep on eight , sleep, mood, lowers stress levels ect ect ect. But yet parkison meds hardly helped.
