  • How to position these people on the stage and how should your choir stand? It’s not a trivial matter. There are standard practices, and not so standard, and of course it depends on many things, such as - what kind of a choir you have, what is your choir culture like, does your choir have a choreography and in what kind of a space the performance is taking place. But, what I realized was - I work as a choir conductor but I really don’t know how I learned what a standard practice was when it comes to this - other than just being in a choir myself. I want you to have a place where you can get this question answered, and this is why I’m making this video.

Hello and welcome to Enquire 2 Choir! :)
This is a channel created for everyone working in the choir field; aimed to help mostly non-professionals, who are in a choir, who are looking into starting a new choir, who have certain questions about managing, directing or conducting a choir, because there is a lot of work when it comes to choirs!
My name is Iva, and I am a professional pianist who somehow landed a career conducting and managing several choirs - so I know from experience how difficult it can be when you don't have any help. It doesn't matter if your choir is a big or small one, if it's a church or a school choir, if its members know how to read music or not. Every choir is an important choir because it assembles people wanting to sound great, and to feel accomplished. This is why every week I will try my best to give the most efficient advice on issues concerning from music to management.

I have been a recording engineer for decades, and came here because of a daunting challenge to record a huge choir in covid conditions. Your colour scheme explanation is just brilliant !
tomorrow I will know details re the choir members' roles and numbers and discuss your ideas with the musical director about working in groups
if i can get multiple SATB groups scattered through the room it might be do-able. my main concern is phase alignment, but i have the solution for that: satellite speakers in each group sending a beep to the mics all at once, so i can align the beeps, hence the choir baseline for phase alignment.
it would solve a ton of problems.
you just inspired the hell out of me !! thank you !! subscribed! i have a new mentor !! yay for me, an old fart!

      Hello,
I am so sorry for the late reply - I remember reading this comment when I was really sad for not being able to see my choirs and it was really hard to deal. But this comment helped me a lot, so thank you.
Actually, recording a choir is a really hard thing to do. I myself am an electrical engineer, so I would be really interested to hear how you managed to do it and what the obstacles were! So if you wish to communicate about it, I hope you email me.
Stay safe and thank you for your patience!

What if you have 1 female in a tenor section? We also have a need for many people to sit down. Consequently the one female tenor has to sit and ends up in the middle of the sopranos and altos....

I have sung tenor in various churches and schools I attended in places where I have lived, and the arrangement was always the men were at the back with bass on the right tenors on the left. In the front, the sopranos were on the right in front of the basses and altos on the left in front of the tenors. Due to health issues, I no longer sing, but the last few years I sang with my church choir, the director started placing me in front in the middle of the alto section. Why would he do that? I never questioned him about it and just went along with it.

Woahhh it's really different from my previous choir standing. Bass behind sopran, tenor behind alto and the strongest singer at the end of line

That has been my experience, too. As a kid in a poor family, we had to move a lot. As a result, I had to change schools and churches a lot. I sang tenor in school as well as church, and the arrangement was always basses in the back to the right tenors on the left and the sopranos in front of the basses and altos in front of the tenors. I no longer sing due to health issues. The last few years that I did my choir director started placing me in the front in the middle of the alto section. Why? I don't know and I never questioned him about it and just rolled with it.
